Re: Match Time Revisited - Burnley v Reading
It’s still on catch up. Our game wasn’t showing when it was advertised.
Vince coming off was a blow. It was the injury that saw him miss virtually the whole of the following season.

Re: Match Time Revisited - Burnley v Reading
Really sorry I missed that. I remember the game very well. I can recall making my usual move to the top of the Bee Hole End from the Longside, ready for the dash to Central to catch the 16.59, feeling disappointed that we hadn’t added to our two early goals despite dominating, when Kevin Young rifled in the third. Billy H gave man-mountain Steve Hetzke a torrid time as he was to do against Micky Droy a year later. This was one of three home games in the second half of the season where we really looked absolutely superb: Bristol Rovers and Portsmouth being the other two. After that the nerves kicked in a bit as promotion became a real possibility. On the way home we met up with the Portsmouth 6.06 crew on their way back from defeat at Carlisle. Happy days

Just found it on catch up. It was Hicks not Hetzke! First time I have seen this since the day of the match. Brilliant

Re: Match Time Revisited - Burnley v Reading
Wow! On a personal note this is amazing for me, as it’s my first ever game. My dad used to do the commentary for hospital radio at the time, from the back of the Bob Lord stand, and this is the first game he took me on.
I remember seeing the goals again the next Sunday morning at a junior clarets do at the centre spot, but I’ve not seen them since. I got Trevor Steven’s autograph that morning too, so it was a great claret baptism weekend for me.
Thanks for posting, I’ve just recorded it, and won’t be deleting.

I enjoyed that too. If I was there (I can't remember) I would most likely have been on the Bee Hole End.
Kevin Young never quite make it at Burnley but at times he did look good. So too did Colin Anderson when he came on. He was a player those that watched the reserves/youth teams said was good yet he was released at the end of this season.

Re: Match Time Revisited - Burnley v Reading
Colin went on to do well with West Brom after a few years at Torquay. I am not sure why we released him in 82 as you could see from this game that he had ability. Kevin Young was such a disappointment. He was excellent that season but struggled in a struggling side in 82/83. Another one from this game who didn’t make it despite much promise was Phil Cavener.
Re: Match Time Revisited - Burnley v Reading
From memory I’m sure I could see myself sitting on the longside fencing,I will have to watch it back..as for Young and Cavener and their early promising starts, both of their careers ended in English league football in their mid 20’s which was a shame really

Shame with Kevin Young. I always thought he looked a good prospect. Dobbo took him to Bury before he finished in the Netherlands with Utrecht.

He was a really important part of that promotion side. Scored the first goal of the long unbeaten run at Portsmouth and rounded off the season with the goal that sealed the Championship

Wasn't Colin Anderson the one that bully boy Bruce Rioch beat up at Torquay? Some very good young players in that short era.Hipper wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 5:31 pmI enjoyed that too. If I was there (I can't remember) I would most likely have been on the Bee Hole End.

Re: Match Time Revisited - Burnley v Reading
Yes it was Anderson who had the altercation with Ricoh which led to the latter’s resignation.
David Holt, a Padiham lad, who played alongside BV in this game died tragically young. I remember the following season he decided to give up football having injured a young opponent in a central league game, saying that he realised he had become too slow to be safe.
Also interesting to see two future England internationals in the Reading team

Would have been two in the Burnley team too had Wimbledon not smashed up Micky Phelan’s face a week earlier.Culmclaret wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 7:57 pmAlso interesting to see two future England internationals in the Reading team

Re: Match Time Revisited - Burnley v Reading
Funny game that Wimbledon one. A physical Wimbledon side, a very hard pitch and we were totally off key. Phalan getting battered, a friendly pitch invasion at half time and Stevenson’s penalty save are the abiding memories. We were grateful for the point in the end. It never looked like being three. Similar 0-0 draws at Newport and Oxford soon after.

I remember thinking it was a good finish when I saw it live but that first goal really was beautifully taken

Which episode is it?, there are 6 listed and none mention Burnley.
Or has it been deleted from catch up?

I would have given some advance warning but our game wasn’t mentioned for some reason.
