5 hours to Turf now
After 49 years of living at my present address in Ruislip west London we are moving to Wimborne in Dorset. Its going to be a very long drive, if it wasn't already. Not many championship grounds south of the Thames to visit either.

Good luck with the move. I’m almost a neighbour of yours, living in Pinner for the last 15 years. I’m hoping to retire with a move a bit nearer to the Turf, perhaps Skipton, Worsthorne or Wycoller. Only the small matter of persuading my better half, a born and bred South Londoner.

Re: 5 hours to Turf now
I moved down to Bournemouth from Burnley 8 years ago. Used to travel up to the Turf 8/9 times a season, so I kept my season ticket, but that has gradually reduced so that I only made it up 3 times last season. Since the pandemic, the trains have also become very difficult and those you can get are ridiculously expensive. Getting too old for a 600 mile round trip in the car now, so sadly had to let my season ticket lapse and rely on our occasional live tv game and texts from friends and family at the games.

Do you drive a Ferrari? We take 4-5 hrs travelling up to the Turf from Wokingham. The M6 roadworks from Stafford and now at Skem make the journey longer.

Totally agree with the cost of trains. I missed five away games last season due to not being able to justify the cost.Paulclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 12:43 pmI moved down to Bournemouth from Burnley 8 years ago. I don't have many extravagances, but one is travelling first class on the few occasions I travel by train.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 1:05 pmTotally agree with the cost of trains. I missed five away games last season due to not being able to justify the cost.
Since Avanti took over from Virgin, the first class fare from Penrith to London has almost doubled.
If I go to QPR or Millwall next season, I'm driving to Darlington and getting the train from there. The fare is about £70 less. The food's better too!

Re: 5 hours to Turf now
It's since the pandemic - we'd booked on Avanti from Manchester to London for the Palace game in 2019/20. It was, with a rail card, just over £31 (not first class). You struggle to get that journey now for under £62.lakedistrictclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 1:19 pmI don't have many extravagances, but one is travelling first class on the few occasions I travel by train.

.... and a very expensive long drive, £100 to fill an average family car, good luck.

Re: 5 hours to Turf now
We moved to Chichester in 2020 and haven’t managed to get to the Turf since as it’s 6 hours each way.
When I lived in Greystones Ireland it was easier - hour to Dublin airport and after a short flight about an hour from Manchester Airport.
As said above no away games close by now as there were previously in the Premier- Reading probably the nearest.

Re: 5 hours to Turf now
The last couple of trips I've made (one being the Spurs cancelled game) came with a fair price tag.
This included return helicopter to Penzance, night sleeper to London Paddington, Euston to Manchester Piccadilly and 3 days car hire, and 2 nights at Premier Inn.
I prefer not to add it up..in fact all the bookings are made by Mrs Fatboy to save me looking at the expense.

Yes of course you miss going to the Turf and your family of course. But you do live in what I think is a lovely part of the country with nearby Poole as well.Paulclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jun 09, 2022 12:43 pmI moved down to Bournemouth from Burnley 8 years ago. Even those of us that live compartatively close (1 hour there and back) will be looking at costs going forward
On the plus side, away games to the north of me again!

Played football a couple of weeks ago at Wimbourne Town FC, really good set up and a lovely part of the world. Got battered which made it a very long 5hr drive home!!!

Re: 5 hours to Turf now
I grew up in Ruislip, good to see there are more clarets fans there for ages I thought it was just me and my dad. It also got worse when I moved away in terms of time, effort and distance...
Re: 5 hours to Turf now
Reading all the above it is going to be interesting to See what our crowds are like next season. Personally I thought they were poor last season. Lots of empty seats at most games
Re: 5 hours to Turf now
Good morning. Sorry to just jump on this thread but I just wanted to check something (for peace of mind) with those who live or have lived in Dorset.
I’ve received an email from Dorset Council claiming to have an invoice attached (info below)
[You don't often get email from arhelpdesk@dorsetcouncil. gov.uk]
Please find attached details of an invoice that is now payable
If you have any queries regarding this invoice please do not hesitate to
telephone or email using the contact details on the attachment.
Regards, Accounts Receivable Team,
The email address it’s sent from looks above board however the invoice which is attached is a .html.
I’m not sure I have ever been to Dorset and I certainly haven’t been for over 35 yrs or so, therefore it’s either a mistake or a scam. I haven’t opened it and I have emailed the council customer service team (but they don’t work weekends).
So for my peace of mind can anyone tell me if they think it’s a phishing scam or if someone is likely trying to use my email address and personal details for fraud purposes. Obviously it’s the latter which concerns me.
Thanks
Ps- I edited the email address to include a double space, so as it not to be a link of any kind.

Re: 5 hours to Turf now
Oh it is well to one side out of the way. However my concern is that someone maybe trying to use my details for fraudulent purposes. If it’s merely a common phishing scam that’s no issue. I’m cautious enough to check everything out and not open links however if it’s legit and someone is tying to use any details of me that bothers me.
I remembered this Dorset thread and just wanted those with knowledge of the council to perhaps shed some light on a bit more of it.

Can't speak for Dorset Council, as I'm under BCP Council, but I've spoken to someone under Dorset and they've never had an email like that.
