Due to be tested on Chris Wood next season to ensure the technology gets put through its paces

They'd be better testing it against marginal offsides

If you go on Football Manager 2021 and start as any Premier League team other than Burnley, then go on fake holiday for 20 years, Burnley are still a premier league team in 2041, so I'm all in favour of automation.

Dont discount the importance of negative testing. Set it on Chris Wood and if anything comes back as onside then they know they have a defect to deal with

Good to know important research is being done out there.

I only know about a few very specific things, like the hairiness of referee's arms or an entertaining football simulator, or the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow.

Yes, in hindsight it is best to keep to specific areas of expertise. I tried to learn everything but only managed to get to 72% of everything.

I say that with only 72% of the necessary information though, so it's only probably correct.

He's an idea. Instead of pratting about with the width of a toe being offside, just put four points of measurement round each player, round the torso, chest, back, and both sides. If the forward has at least three points of measurement ahead of at least three points of the defender, then he is offside. If it's less than that, he's level.

That would pretty much represent the rule as it has been for years, as it was intended to be when they changed to level=onside in 1990, and as it is in matches when there is no VAR.

Just simplify the off side rule: if there is daylight between any part of attacker and last defender then offside. If any part( trailing heel/ hand/ butt ) of attacker overlaps/ coincides with last defender then their on side. Will make for a more attacking game and keep defenders more on their toes as if they think they are in- line when ball is played they have to either chase back with attacker or step up field to try and get day light - mind games🙂.

The words "semi-automated" mean it still requires the opinion of a referee. Which in turn will mean there is just as much controversy as there is now.

Has VAR even come close to sorting out handball, red card offences etc?

If the answer is yes then this new system will work well. Otherwise it'll just be a disaster, like the rest of VAR is.

They dont need to get rid of VAR - they need to sort the offside rule out.

(Well they DO need to get rid of VAR too but you know what I mean)

The handball rule is the worst. Totally ridiculous penalty given to WHU last night. Nearly as bad the Spurs one when Ash was pushed.

World Football - "We have an offside system with a track record proven that it works".

Premier League - "Don't worry, we'll carry on with our incompetence but we'll add a couple more cameras".

That was a penalty for me. I thought it was harsh on first viewing, on second, from a different angle, it was nailed on.

I have to agree. I think the defender actually did it deliberately.

What a surprise! Much better to let the incompetent ones fudge decisions in favour of the bigger clubs!
