With the apparent external view of Burnley as having more than their share of racists, a question asked in this way is just a bizarre thing to put forward to the manager.

If we’re serious about our reputation as a club (going back to Pace’s ‘everyone’s favourite underdog comment) and attracting investment, questions such as this could actually hinder progress.

One harmless but ill thought out question could have damaged a really good opportunity to show Burnley in a very different, more positive light.
What exactly is bizarre or wrong about that question though? It did put me on the back foot too, but is asking that question being racist?

If he had asked what is it like to be Burnley's first Belgin Manager would that have been wrong? Not saying I agree here, just trying to understand what makes it wrong.

I think we'll regret not going for him
we'll never know, but in a squad that is made up of strangers, to put it on a teenager's shoulders to be the main striking threat is perhaps not the wisest thing to do

What makes you think he would thrive at this level?
He’s one of the most highly rated young strikers in the country.

Only a few months ago he won the European championship with England u19s.

He’s going to be a top player, he will thrive at this level.

There are many players who looked the part only to fade away as they got older
Perhaps Delap will fall into this category

If you are looking for an answer, that particular question has no relevance in a pre-match press conference.

No doubt about it, it was a completely ridiculous question to ask.

Should he pay for that mistake with his job? Absolutely not. It was gittish and Ill thought out, nothing more. Phil Bird is a tremendous commentator. Be a poor do to lose him over this.

I've no dog in this fight, but anyone describing Phil Bird as a 'tremendous commentator' is either wrong, lying, or Phil Bird himself.

I would argue he’s already played at a considerably higher level At PL2.

Plus Twine is 4 years older.

What makes Liam Delap anymore likely to score goals at this level than, say, Rhian Brewster, who scored 20 in 23 for England under 17s and cost over £20m.

Delap might be great. He might be ****. It’s a risk hanging your hat on a 19 year old like that.

The relevant word is prospect... He might well be, but there is nothing in his CV to say he would be a major goalscorer at this level, how ever much other posters want to be abusive to argue that point

Vincent Kompany has played top class football and collected multiple honours during his time as captain of Manchester City, the Premier League champions and Belgium, one of the top rated international sides. We all know Manchester City is a club that plays 30 miles or so away from Burnley. Vincent Kompany's wife is from the north west of England. He's in the early stages of his career as a manager - and doing very well. I don't think there are any questions that need to be asked.

All the good, proper, potentially excellent strikers under 21 are playing for their good, proper, already excellent clubs. They aren't going on loan to Stoke or us.

I struggle getting excited about modern football, and I know there's only been 2 league games, but how many strikers 21 and under have played for a Premier League club this season? How many have scored? I don't know if Haaland is 21, but he certainly doesn't count. The only other I can think of is Martinelli at Arsenal but it's very much exception rather than rule

Massive overreaction. If I was in Africa and someone asked me how I felt about being the first white manager, I wouldn't be offended, I am white. I might be caught off-guard by the question as VK was but it isn't a racist question and doesn't deserve a sacking. I have had my kids tell me it is racist to call somebody black. It is not, it is descriptive.

ok, thanks - just wanted to check, because I don't believe it's phrased that way. I would suggest African American has become de-facto IF you are not AA yourself
Not always for sure. Give you Black History Month as an example. In my opinion it's fairly interchangeable in this day and age, but you're right, a lot of times AA is used.

Besides, it would be strange to call VK African American since he's Belgian and doesn't live in America.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Off topic a bit but Phil Bird should be sacked and so should the person who interviewed the players on the training camp ( he answers his own questions to the players).

Interesting though he wants first choice for England u19s though. The young Spurs striker (forgotten his name) was the main man. Whilst I know that doesn’t reflect how well he will do (neither does his u23 scoring record) it’s just worth pointing out.

I genuinely don’t know the answer to this, but how have did he and City do in the Johnston Paint thing (if that’s what it’s called) against lg 1 and 2 teams.

If Jay or Twine are going to be the main man I’m more inclined for us to go for a big Ariel threat as back up so we can put crosses in (Vokes mould) when teams sit so deep. Felt that was lacking last 10 when we brought Barnes on

Yes I have. But for the record we were div 2. City play in div 1.

They also play in the u23 European competitions
It's just that you seem to know a lot about the facilities.

Was out of contract at the end of last season so they had to tie him down. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him out on loan this season, probably to a PL club though.

I’d imagine a high % of PL2 players end up at League 1 level or below. At best only 2-3 players from any given PL2 squad is going to forge a career in the top two tiers of English football. There’ll be a few exceptions to this such as City & Chelsea, but most of the opposition Delap has faced in PL2 won’t be destined for successful careers amongst the upper echelons of the professional game.

Have you watched One Shot on Sky that came out recently? Follows the journey of a number of academy/youth players last season through to contract decisions etc. The % of players that actually make it is starting.
