Whilst the suggestion of blocking the path of Costelloe and the likes of Tucker is somewhat true, it also gives us more options, including Costelloe and Tucker, plus it takes pressure off them to perform . Everyone involved at the club has played down the expectation to get promoted this season, but it is most certainly the target

I do agree, I think it blocks the likes of Costelloe and a Tucker coming through.

Got to suggest that Kompany feels he is a big upgrade

Surely you are only blocking someone's path if you are better than them. Or you could say every single person we sign is blocking someone's path

I agree - im not overly excited by tella. Would be a good buy but as a loan be probably won’t be a main player this year. He’s therefore only really blocking similar ability players like twine.

Good pace option though I suppose.

We need players to come in and perform really, so blocking paths doesn’t bother me if they’re significantly better players. I’d rather we signed players permanently but beggars cannot be choosers - and we are beggars to a degree, as Kompany himself admits. I know nothing of Tella but the team has a distinct lack of pace barring Maatsen and possibly Benson from what we’ve seen thus far, so if he adds to that then great.

I’m looking forward to Twine being fit. Once we have him and a first choice striker there will be so many options across that front line.

We had a Striker made for Championship level...if only Weghorst had a better attitude to carry on and play in the Championship. He would have been getting service all day long and bagging goals for us.
Oh well....just saying.
Don't ever want to see him in our colours again.

On Saturday when Luton began the game pressing us really aggressively, they completely stopped us playing for the first quarter of the game. I thought at the time what we desperately needed was some real pace at the top of the pitch, allowing us to hit a direct ball into the space left behind them which would have turned them and stopped them squeezing the pitch.
Genuinely think Costelloe could be that player for us. He was like a coiled spring in the first half, always making darting runs we just didn't have the player to hit him. Whether that player could be Benson or Westwood in time I'm not sure, but I've been really encouraged with Costelloe so far.

Is Tucker injured ? He hasn't been in the squad for either game so if he is fit claiming his path is being blocked by someone who isn't here yet is a bit weird.

The squad needs more depth, it really isn't about blocking paths it is about having a group of players to cope with the number of games we have.

Yeah Costelloe was making some brilliant runs in the first half, but there almost seemed a reluctance from the other players to try and find him. Not sure why that was. He was great in the second half on the left side though and was really direct with the ball.

When Leeds were in the Championship under Bielsa, they were similar to us in terms of build up play around the back, but they were also the masters of hitting direct balls into space every now and again with pacey players after it to prevent them being squeezed too much. I hope and suspect that's what Kompany wants from us too.

Haha I’m not sure either.

I think Costelloe looks a player, if he keeps playing I think he could potentially get a level higher than Tella.

Kompany must value Tellas attributes higher. But I do agree at his age it seems a bit of a strange move all round tbh.

Southampton fans seem to think he’ll do very well in the Championship.

Also not sure about how it’s blocking paths, Costelloe and Tucker are only 19 and will undoubtedly get a lot of minutes this season (not sure on Tucker as he hasn’t made the bench over Phillips in the past 2).

Our system requires a high intensity and this is why VK wants a large squad to cope with the fixtures. We have 6 games in the next 3 weeks I think?

Agree. And I would far rather we got Tella on loan & diverted funds towards a top striker target. We need a 20 goal striker more than anything else.

My question was more whether he’d end up being the best of the wingers linked so far? He might be, but then wouldn’t be ours. Anyway… not relevant now since we’re not making the decisions (thank god).
As nice as a 20 goals striker would be (and I'd like us to sign one too) I'm not sure if it is that required. I expect the plan will be that goals will be much more distributed around the team with some midfielders getting into double figures.

Kompany Made the point recently that his team scored 105 goals across all comps last season I think, yet didn’t have 1 player over 20 goals

Saints reporter on twitter

‘Nathan Tella’s loan to Burnley heavily influenced by Vincent Kompany who spoke to him multiple times prior to the move. Tella travelled up to Burnley yesterday and as reported elsewhere is currently undergoing his medical.’

Sounds like Kompany really wanted him and was (again) a big factor why he chose us (Athletic report interest from top European leagues and other Champ clubs).

That's all well and good but none of our midfield options have ever been prolific scorers at any level bar Twine. That's not to they never will be but it would take multiple players to suddenly develop a goalscoring quality they've never previously demonstrated, which is unlikely.

That’s fair enough, but how many of our current squad have scored more than ten in a season?

From what I can tell 3 have. Twine (in league 1), Jay and Barnes at prem level.

I still think a striker that scores 20 plus is a priority

Costelloe needs to be brought in slowly and sensibly like McNeil was by Dyche. If it comes to it , and people feel he is that good, then play him rather than Barnes, who is not our future, or producer of goals -one penalty in a full season, plus pre season, plus 180 minutes this season

Agree with both and I’m sure Kompany also sees a striker as a priority. Just highlighting he also wants goals more spread out and this type of football encourages that (as seen with Maatsen goal and Roberts almost scoring in that game).

It seems there’s a genuine lack of strikers across the board at the min. Boro have also been desperate, have some cash, yet have made two ‘meh’ signings in Hoppe and Forss. For me personally, I’d be asking Cov the question for Gyokeres and making him our final signing of the summer.

Brownhill has played most of his career at this level and never got more than 5 goals.

Benson best ever season at any level was 5 goals in season.

Twine has a goal scoring record to support that thesis.

That would be a real sign of intent. I actually think signing him and potentially another player like twine we will be right up there

Didn't McNeil get brought into the team v West Ham (after Everton had hammered us at home on Boxing Day) and then get played continuously from then onwards ? I don't remember him being gradually introduced, as I recall it he went overnight from never playing to being ever-present.

Apart from his debut, McNeil was brought in when things were going badly for the West Ham home game, and then played in practically every game since then. I often wondered if we put too much pressure on him for a nineteen year old who hadn't played regularly at the top level and was still presumably developing physically.

He was brought in earlier that season, I'm sure he played some League Cup games and Europa League games in August/September time before then being left out until West Ham in December.

Sky Sports reporting Tella has agreed to join on loan ( Transfer Centre Live ) @11:37

" Saints winger Tella agrees Burnley loan
Southampton winger Nathan Tella has agreed to join Burnley on a season-long loan.

The 23-year-old academy graduate has made 33 Premier League appearances for the Saints.

He made 14 last season mostly from the left-wing, but he can also plan on the right and as a second striker.

Tellas was once in Arsenal’s academy before moving to Southampton in 2017. "

I couldn’t find it either.

FWIW, was told earlier we’d agreed a fee but player had yet to decide.

The prospect of Maatsen and Tella charging down the left is going to cause teams problems. For this reason the need for someone who can lead the line is key. If we sign the young Dane CH from Liverpool on loan it takes to 4 loans. Supposition but if we also got Delap on loan can all 5 make up part of the 25 man squad

With Vincent Kompany confirming Burnley’s interest in Sporting winger Jovane, the Portuguese media today features several stories about the player’s future.

It turns out, however, that the most interesting piece we’ve seen isn’t especially about the Clarets. It’s actually regarding the agents who represent the 24-year-old.

Newspaper Record explains that even though most footballers work with only one official, there are actually several agencies who have been handling Jovane’s career.

That means there’s a big mess going on, because different agents have been making different requests even when negotiating with the same clubs, and that scenario is only delaying his departure from Sporting this summer.

Record then highlights the fact that Jovane would like to move to a top league, and that’s where Burnley get a mention.

The outlet writes that the forward gave denials to the Clarets, as he doesn’t want to play the Championship, and to Besiktas, from Turkey.

So if Burnley are that focused on signing him, a lot of work to convince the player will be needed.

So Record never said anything about him joining us, in fact quite the opposite.
