VDB’s underlying data last season for PNE. Looks impressive.

I'm not so sure. I think we'll go (relatively) big on a CB, number 10 and a Striker
I’d like us to but our plan summer seems to of been 5mil limit, if we where going to spend big on a cb, 10, striker then o’hare would already be a Burnley player

I think maybe Kompany has seen something in training and doesn’t think Egan-Riley is quite ready for the champ test yet and wants another body in with champ experience

Quite likely that VK doesn’t see McNally featuring this season and also likely that he doesn’t see Long featuring at all. Vitinho has been brought on for Costelloe twice now so not sure he’s seen necessarily as a full back.

Regardless of how many defenders we have, I think yesterday went to show how much we are missing an aerially dominant centre back.

Agree entirely. This is where we could be vulnerable especially off set pieces.

Which it looks like this guy is.

Also worth mentioning IF we do go up then perhaps the likes of VDB and THB are quite realistic permanent deals, given how nigh on impossible it will be to break into Liv / City’s teams.

So Nixon says we are bidding 5M for a defender and signing another 1 on loan, can't see both happening.
Unless there's an update he said we had a bid rejected (think it was 2.5 million) a while ago and since then another team had a bid of 5 million euros rejected.

He's already said Thomas will go out on loan and i think Long's days are numbered, either sell or loan him. Lowton could leave too.

I saw on insta that we’re linked with Mikautadze, striker from Metz who spent last 2 seasons on loan at Seraing. He is exactly what is missing. Clinical finisher and someone who can make chances on his own. Technically superb, goes past defenders with ease and scored easily.

Sounds a very interesting option. Nixon said on Patreon that we hold interest but it depends on the price.

The one you are looking at (I think) is just how many aerial duels he actually faced. Aerial duel success is the important one and is ranked quite high.

I think if we get VDB then I see Taylor as becoming one of the two LB's with Maatsen. The latter will get the vote right now.We were not tested v Huddersfield, but were more yesterday by Luton, and will continue to be aerially in this Division-however our marking from corners and free kicks, and our aerial supremacy took a huge knock with Tarks, Mee & Collins all going. While Charlie has been admirable at covering at CH,and has the advantage of playing left side (the only one in the main squad) I think this will be temporary under VK.The other possibility might be that there is interest in Roberts and as seen at Preston VDB is a very very good right back and would replace him. I would like to think none of our now first teamers will move on, and Roberts seems to be playing well now

Lowton, Taylor, Long, Thomas, Riley, McNally, Bellis, Roberts, Vitinho, VDB that takes us to ten defenders for 4 possible positions
Lowton (Going)

Taylor (1st-team squad defender option playing out of his normal position)

Long (Going)

Thomas (Under-23 squad player out on loan)

Riley (By his own admission a utility player who has played across the back and also as a central midfield holding player)

McNally (A raw untested player at his level or higher but will hopefully become a 1st-team squad defender option and will take time to adjust)

Bellis (1st-team squad defender option)

Roberts (1st-team squad defender option but still a chance he leaves in this transfer window)

Vitinho (Played on both sides in defence and in attack but more on the wing recently for his last club and with us)

VDB (Hopefully 1st-team squad defender option)

Out of those 10 "defenders", 2, maybe even 3 leave permanently in the not too distant future... Another is an under-23 squad player going out on loan and has never been a first-team regular anyway...

Another is a utility player who has never been a dedicated defender, certainly not a dedicated central defender as some describe him on here...

One is a player who has never played at this level or above and I would class him more as an under-23 squad player with an eye to the future and another has played most of his recent games in attack so when you dig into it, it is nowhere near 10 defenders that are 1st-team squad defender options and you should always have at least 8 defenders as a bare minimum who are 1st-team squad level defenders anyway!...

And what is this weird obsession lately?.. on here recently to add under-23 squad players with little to no first team experience as part of the squad to justify their opinion that a certain part of the squad is top-heavy.

Chacha do you know for a fact the players you have said a leaving are actually leaving? There are absolutely no links suggesting this.

U23 players have been added because they have signed pro deals and are classed as first teamers. Not an obsession just a fact. The fact is that if he signs we will have 10 defenders on the books

Not sure if it at U21 or U23 but the age group players don’t count towards the squad total so add as many as you like.

Van den Berg was on the Liverpool bench yesterday because of the absence of Ibrahima Konate due to injury. Hopefully this won't prevent his release before the window closes.

I think enough players have shown that if you can excel in Belgian pro league you can make it in the championship (Cullen, Berge, Dennis) some even in the PL like Trossard, Origi, Benteke. Just a few examples but there are many. Some players need settling in, some hit the ground running. Anyway as to Mikautadze, one of the best strikers I have seen the last 2 seasons on Belgian pro league level. He carried that Seraing team on his own.

Be interesting to see what happens with Taylor if we get Van De Berg. Definitely can’t see him replacing Maatsen. Would we move to a back 3 with Roberts and Maatsen playing LWB and RWB respectively? If so then we’ll have to lose one of Cork or Cullen IMO or we risk playing to defensive.

Championship, post relegation clause adjustment wages? There's always a deal to be done, which might include a longer contract period with the new club.

Strange move for him I think, regular game time in League One with a decent top half side, to being sat on his arse behind 2 loan players here. Egan-RIley played 20 times in the Championship last season, I'd be surprised if he gets even 10 apps here.

Egan Riley has made 3 senior appearances all for Man City.

I’d agree with you. Slightly harsh but Maatsen has been unbelievable and from early form is a contender for our POTS. Only thing is with Taylor he’ll probably be up there with one of the highest earners. Will BFC try to ship him on and get a few mill.

Long and Lowton are rumoured to still be on 20-25k following relegation. For that kind of money I can’t see anyone picking them up.

Strange move for him I think, regular game time in League One with a decent top half side, to being sat on his arse behind 2 loan players here. Egan-RIley played 20 times in the Championship last season, I'd be surprised if he gets even 10 apps here.
That was Harwood-Bellis at Stoke

Charlie Taylor is too small for a CB.
He will be outjumped everytime!
Taylor has to be taller than Cannavaro/Ricardo Carvalho.

Mascherano was a midget moved to CB too. Puyol was 5ft 10.

De Boer, Koeman, Beckenbauer, Bobby Moore, Baresi some older names from the past.

You're also talking like we've not just seen 5ft 11 Ben Mee do well at CB here for the last 8 years?

Talking about centre backs... Hendry is on his way to a new club tonight, just don't know which one.

I thought Egan-Riley played for Coventry last season with Maatsen?

No Egan Riley has made 1 start in champs league, 1 start in league cup and 1 sub appearance in the prem.

That’s it.

I knew about the CL appearance against Sporting, had it in my head he was at Coventry for half a season on loan too. I think Egan-Riley can expect to be patient then.
