Transfer Rumours Thread - NO FINANCIAL DISCUSSION

I’m going to this a go, it might work, it might not.

However whilst I appreciate football transfers involve finance, let’s try having a discussion thread where it doesn’t descend into “we are skint and desperate” and “it will pay off the loan” plus all the other noise that seems to follow any rumoured sale or purchase from a lower league.

So this is the only post that’s allowed to mention finance.

Let’s talk about the players we are linked with (the fee can be discussed but not how it’s paid) the players we might sell and how it will all piece together come the end of July.

It’s got to be better than what we are seeing in almost every other thread.

#UTC

People who teach positive thinking and mindsets will tell you nothing is impossible.

This will defeat that theory. Good luck.

So are we just talking about possible "Free Transfers" on this thread 🤔 seeing as no financial talk is allowed 😏

In the spirit of what you’re attempting Arise (and rest assured, I’ll keep my finance hat away!), the list of links as I can recall is something like:

Taylor Harwood-Bellis - Man City - Season loan
Moussa Sissako - Standard Liege - No fee suggested
Joel Latibeaudiere - Swansea City - £500k
Luke McNally - Oxford United - £1.75m
Brandon Ormond-Ottewille - Excelsior - Free (out of contract)
Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel - Blackpool - No fee suggested

Midfielders:

Josh Cullen - Anderlecht - No fee suggested

Jed Wallace - Millwall - Free (out of contract)
Mandela Keita - OH Leuven - £4m

Please add any that I’ve undoubtedly missed.

That’s more like it and a bit more focus on the actual players.

Must admit amidst all the nonsense I’d forgotten a number of them, some of which seemed strong when first mooted like the lad from Blackpool.

Our first summer signing will likely be in that list.

At the risk of trying to get the thread back on topic. I've watched quite a bit of Lokonga, even if the link to him is tenuous I'd still like to see him in a Burnley shirt.

This link to Taylor Harwood-Bellis on loan from City seems to go very much against VCs statement that he regards loans as a last resort. Maybe he's thinking of a permanent deal? (Tongue, very much in cheek.)

It would, be nice for us to get a deal or two over the line before weekend or the Pope news is confirmed, maybe today is the day for this one.

Pretty sure Jed Wallace will be wanting to make a final decision too - won’t want to miss much more of pre season with his new team (hopefully us).

No wonder we are selling Pope so cheaply then. 8 to 10 million? That's ridiculous.

Not sure there is anything planned immediately (today) but it would be useful to get some signings in early.

The suggestion is the fee is 15m including some add ons. That seems about right for a keeper of his age. Perhaps it would have been slightly higher had there been more than one club bidding.

Is it not a bit early to rule out other bidders though? A lot can happen in pre-season - injuries and the like. I can’t see why why we’re folding to the richest club in the world so early in the window.

Goalkeepers stick around a lot longer than outfield players, so I think even £15 million is very low. Several clubs are supposed to be interested but maybe Newcastle are offering higher wages? No doubt it will be the usual 'Undisclosed fee' from Burnley, so maybe we'll never know.

There is only Newcastle with a firm interest. All the others who may have held an interest have secured a different keeper (eg Forest are getting Henderson on loan, Fulham in talks with Leno on loan). The record for a 30+ year old keeper is 16m and that was Portugal’s number 1 Rui Patricio.

I would have liked 20m inc add ons but it is what it is - could we afford to pass up on Newcastle’s interest, keep an unhappy player (clearly wants to stay in the PL to keep World Cup hopes alive) and him leave on a free? Does Pope fit into VK’s plans to play out from the back?

Good point, that would be a risk we’d need to be willing to take. Newcastle would likely move on and then it’s relying on injuries. Plus - does the Pope sale give us the immediate cash flow to bring in a few ourselves now?

Newcastle Chronicle now reporting that Burnley have dropped their “astronomical “ demands and the deal is likely to be £15 million which includes add ons.

It will be a very sad day when Popey leaves. That triangle at the back with Mee and Tarky were the basis of our EPL joyride.

That’s a risk, I get that. But when you consider his stats in the PL, we’re talking one of the worlds best keepers here & I think that would ultimately attract others from across world football.

If you’re Pope though, would you be so happy about going to a club that only want you on the cheap? Or that move on so quickly? We’re talking the richest club in the world here. Even if you want a move to them, I’m not sure that’s a good sign.

Their press/fans are saying this is to put pressure on Dubravka (who is 33), not necessarily number one. I’m assuming he has reassurances in that regard or I’d consider it a very bad move all round.

The low fee muted makes me wonder if there’s some reciprocal loans/cheap signings coming the other way.

15m sale would put him in the top 3 most expensive British keepers of all time and 2nd most expensive 30+ year old keeper in PL history. Not sure that constitutes ‘selling him on the cheap’.

Update from Andy Jones this morning:

- club do not want or need to sell Collins, it is believed only an astronomical fee will make them budge
- two bids rejected for McNally
- with the Pope deal being ‘lower’ than their initial valuation, the club were keen to get as much money upfront to help boost their own transfer funds
- no bids for McNeil

McNally who can go for 1,75 million is too expensive?

Does it say what the Pope offer is? I don’t take any pleasure in more cash up front - surely double spread over two years would be a better deal!!

Also says we’ve had bids rejected and moved on from McNally. Good to hear we’re not being messed around.

Great news on Collins also. Really hope that’s true because he’s the one I’d like to see us build around.

It does to me & most of what I read on twitter (from their fans as well) is describing this as a “bargain”. Inflation and all that! I see very few of our fans thinking we’ve got a good deal and certainly none of theirs thinking they’ve been ripped off.

Anyway, let’s agree to disagree. Don’t want to ruin another thread!

Not sure we only want him on the cheap, I think Newcastle are just in a strong bargaining position. We've a lot of the window left to find other options, we can pay up front or in installments without worrying too much either way, at worst we keep Dubravka as No1 and that's not terrible. On the other hand, Burnley need the money and time to find a replacement and would be left with an unhappy player should 'astronomical demands' get in the way of a good move for him.

Reports I've heard put the deal at around £10-15m. A good deal for us, and not a bad one for you considering he's only got a year left on his contract. He's better than Pickford was when Everton signed him, but Pickford was much younger, and had 3yrs left on his deal.

We dont " need " to sell Collins but we took a low offer for Pope because we needed as much as possible up front ...

I think the sentence is a little ambiguous. I think it’s more a case of we are resigned to losing Pope so the best case scenari for us is as much ‘up front’ as possible.

Also the term ‘up front’ in transfer terms often means without the add ins as opposed to it meaning getting the bulk of the cash on day one.

It does but I also think the best thing would be to have a thread just with the player's name and the link to the transfer rumour and nothing else. Keep the conversation to another page. Saves having to wade through pages of "he said she said" unless you want to.

I am aware of the irony of posting this on this thread before anyone asks. :)

Not really, it stands to reason that you need to talk about fees when discussing transfers. It’s part and parcel of a transfer and I acknowledge this in the opening post.

What I am trying to avoid on this thread is it following the path of all the others and turning into a discussion about the clubs financial position, MSD Loans, payment schedules, interest charges, fire sales, money owed to MG and all the other second guessing that is going on at the moment.

That’s what has become tedious and what is spoiling other threads.

Can we limit to official rumours, rather than "my mate saw Scott Twine at Padiham"?
