England v New Zealand 3rd test

No Jimmy due to an ankle injury, but don't worry folks, Jamie Overton steps up for his test debut.

Yes our first games are going to commence smack bang in the middle of the cricket season, and the summer break seems to become shorter year by year.

NZ win toss and bat, looks a good toss to win, but after what happened in the first 2 tests I'm not going to make any predictions.

Always look up at Headingley before the toss.

Impressive opening bursts by Broad and Potts, including the wicket of Latham for 0, 18-1 after 7.

Pretty poor bowling attack I think - are Potts and J Overton test class? Leach is a very average spinner.
Broad ok - Stokes ok.

Excellent first hour for England, and Leach getting some spin early in the match.

Broad strikes to remove Williamson, this is shaping up to be a great session for England with 3 back in the hutch already, on what is apparently a perfect pitch for batting.

65-3 England would have taken that after losing the toss. 2 for Broad, who's leading the attack splendidly in Anderson's absence, and Leach nipping out a wicket with his 1st ball.

Agreed. Losing the toss and being made to field on a decent looking wicket (though not necessarily "a belter") and getting to lunch at 65-3 is a very good start. We need a couple (or more) wickets this afternoon but Stokes will be enjoying his sarnies/quiche/pie more than Williamson.

It's a wicket where you can make a score, but you'll have to work for your runs, unlike Trent Bridge where scoring was easy.

Good cricket wicket giving Batsmen and bowlers each a fair crack of the whip. So well done to the groundsmen for producing such a track.

Nicholls surviving an LBW review, looked out to the comms, and he might have got lucky there.

NZ going nowhere since lunch, but all England's attack are bowling well and giving them nothing to hit.

Shockingly bad decision by England not to review that LBW against Mitchell, he would have been plum.

England notch a fluke wicket bang on tea, Nicholls was unlucky there.

123-5 at tea.

Amazing how often something new/surprising happens cricket; one of the reasons its such a great game.

I once saw a ball hit a fielder's head and then be caught by another fielder but I've never ever seen the non striker get a bat on it like that.

Spin after tea from England, then a burst from Broad, but still no sign of Stokes bowling today, is that tactical; or is he carrying a niggle?

New ball nearing mind you, so perhaps they want to hurry through to that.

One of those what happened next moments for a future telly clip. A huge bonus for England though.

50 for Mitchell, who's yet again holding England at bay, along with his mate Blundell.

Mitchell and Blundell yet again rescuing NZ, and an unbroken century stand between them ensures NZ finish on 225-5.

Honours even on balance I'd say.

Strange day; only five wickets but NZ haven't got themselves out in front. Couple of early wickets tomorrow and England will be in with a shout of bowling them out for 300-320.

Very flat atmosphere, particularly before and after tea, not helped by England seeming to let the game drift away with Leach bowling so many overs, with Root at the other end, without really threatening (freak dismissal aside).

Guess that was a result of trying to manage three seamers on a hot day.

Probably! and Broad apart a very inexperienced seam attack, thankfully Leach bowled well today and tied an end down during that marathon 23 over spell before England took the new ball, there did feel a lack on intensity about proceedings today, however we've been spoilt by the first 2 tests, so it was inevitable the series would dip at some stage.

A few have put the flat atmosphere down to the train strikes.

Potts finally gets his wicket he richly deserves, Blundell gone for 55, a vital breakthrough for England, 243-6.

For those wondering why the batsman didn't review, DRS apparently isn't working.

England persisting with this short ball ploy, no idea why as it's not working, and NZ are gaining valuable runs this morning,

Another 100 for Mitchell, and a mighty 6 to get him there, what a series he's having, NZ'S player of the series by a country mile.

300 up for NZ, and at 120-5 that didn't look likely.

Overton is a swing bowler being asked to bowl short.

Madness.

After keeping the run rate tight for 100 overs they have now just piled them on.

Tickled me that Mitchell went over ton off Overton.
And he’s out caught in the deep by Stokes off Leach.
325-8 at lunch.

Mitchell departs just before lunch for 109, but still a good morning for NZ, 325-8, so NZ could well get around 350, which on this turgid pitch is a decent total.

Some bizarre tactics deployed by England in this innings, bowling the 2 spinners post tea yesterday, and then not giving Broad the new ball 1st thing this morning, this innings has suddenly got away after England being in control for the most part.

Leach gets his 5-for, and NZ 329 all out, however could be a tricky days batting for England in overcast conditions.

Pope goes cheaply, another for Boult, 14-2, and as I feared England finding it tough with the bat.

Crawley goes, 17-3, and a 3rd clean bowled for Boult.

Suddenly that 329 is looking an awful lot bigger.

Root goes, 21-4, this is a shambles. Good bowling by NZ, who bizarrely keep pitching it up and swinging it.
