Re: Glastonbury 2022
The Stones are a great example.
In my opinion they had 10 years learning their trade and then were transformed by a seriously talented young blues player who turned their music from 60s pop to a fusion of rhythm and blues, the emerging black music and the southern rock scenes of the early 70 to create handful of stunning albums that are never going to be bettered.
Musically they had learnt from some brilliant guitarists playing slide and Open G and their licks were forged on the fires burning on the devils tail.
On the other hand, you have The Dry Cleaners.

Re: Glastonbury 2022
Of course grunge and rap “bands” will be around in 60 years, in some shape or form.
The Stones haven’t released anything worth listening to in 40 plus years. They are trading on past glories (albeit exceptionally good past glories) and are a great live band.
You can like old bands without sneering at new music.

I can't work out whether this is trolling or pure ignorance.
Re: Glastonbury 2022
First Aid Kit very much worth checking out on iPlayer. Seems they have been around a few years but a new one for me. Folky rock band led by 2 Swedish sisters. I thought they were excellent musically. And otherwise....

Very in vogue about 6 or 7 years ago but a bit out of the limelight now their earlier stuff is really really good if you like that folky harmony thing. Still good now of course.
But by heck there's some moany old comments on here isn't there. Not watched Wet Leg yet but saw them last year supporting Inhaler - thought they were outstanding. Goat Girl too (supporting Blossoms think) couplenof weeks later then also in April supporting Foals.
Glasto is always going to have a lot of trendy stuff as well as the main headliners as that's what radio 1 does

Kate Bush is at number 1 for f**ks sake.claret2018 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 8:58 amThis is the laziest, ignorant comment you can make about music.
There’s so much good stuff released every year, and I guarantee there’s something released in the last 6 months you would love.
The thing is you’ve got to look for it, actively seek it out. It’s never been easier or cheaper to do so, but it still takes time and effort.
If you only listen to what’s played on commercial radio then you might think modern music isn’t for you. But there’s thousands of albums released every year, so the chances are there’s something for you.
Nothing wrong with that, if it was 30 odd years ago.

Re: Glastonbury 2022
At 70 I suppose I could be considered a stick in the mud. I love the Stones and currently watching Noel Gallagher and enjoying it, but it’s the sort of music I was brought up on to an extent. I’m also looking forward to Diana Ross tomorrow.Billy Balfour wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 12:46 pmSome good comments on this thread, but by god we do have some right old stick-in-the-muds on this forum. Even my mum and dad, in their mid 60s, still go to watch up-and-coming bands at the venues like the Trades Club in Hebden Bridge and the Brudenell in Leeds.
I went to see Dry Cleaning early on this year - they are a talented bunch and tight as feck. No doubt someone, who hasn't bought any new mucic since the 1970s, will admonish them for not playing a half hour self-indulgent guitar solo with a violin bow.
But I never criticise anyone’s choice of music. If there’s something I don’t like then I don’t watch or listen. It’s such a personal choice but I never rule anything out because it’s new.
Music wise, I always believe you shouldn’t allow yourself to get stuck in the past but also never allow yourself to forget the past either.

The Stones don't need to release anything new. They just pack out wherever they are playing because their music has longevity.

But I've been told that I should search for decent music nowadays.
I don't remember ever having to search for good music 50/40/30 years ago (plus 50 years for the older Ladies and Gents ). It was there, on tap.

Re: Glastonbury 2022
I like the Stones, and they were before my time. But the reason that they have longevity, other than their music being good, is that the people who were around when they were making music are also still around. I bet the majority of under thirties couldn’t name a Rolling Stones track.Stayingup wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 10:16 pmI'd like a bet on that. Grunge around in 60 years. Re: Glastonbury 2022
People thought jazz was artless noise, then it became the mainstream, then it declined, and now one of its biggest living legends Herbie Hancock is playing the main stage on Sunday, a few acts before Kendrick Lamar who is closing the entire festival, who sets himself apart most other mainstream rap by borrowing heavily from jazz. Though this idea of popularity or longevity being a mark of quality is total nonsense, and I'm not sure what the point you're making is, other than the fact there are loads of people around who are quite happy for music not to innovate?Stayingup wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 10:16 pmI'd like a bet on that. They’re very well educated, I can assure you. But I don’t think the majority of people born in the 90’s will care about the Rolling Stones. In the same way that I wouldn’t expect someone in their 60’s to care about Kendrick Lamar.

Music is always a generational thing, my daughters thought billie Elisha was amazing, i thought she was talented, but left me unmoved…. The mix on the sound coming through the bbc seems to vary a hell of a lot with the vocals suffering more than I remember from previous years
