Players stepping up

Post by Guller Bull » Sun Jun 26, 2022 6:25 pm

New start - new values - new way of playing

Who do you think can make the step up from Academy level to first team squad given that the onus from AP/VK seems to be all about youth?

Bobby Thomas looks ready to step up for me at CB
Helm looks ready for challenging for a midfield role
Philips apparently did more than well for Morecambe on loan in midfield
Costelloe had a really good season in the U23's - can he break through?

Who else?

Also where do we think we are at with BPF in terms of staying and challenging Hennessey or moving on?

Dodgson possibly, and I also like the look of Finlay Armstrong (the left footed right back)

Without a doubt Lewis Richardson, expecting big things from him if he can stay fit!

Would have said Bobby Thomas and Jacob Bedeau but looks like we are signing many new cb’s.

Others could include Dodgson, as back up left back, and Costelloe, back up inside winger.

Helm could be play the role of 4th choice in centre midfield, presuming we sign another one or two there.

Mention is made above of BPF. If in pre season he impresses he may well get the nod, especially if as he may be better with his feet than Hennessey unless a new keeper is definitely coming in.

Such a lottery the championship arguably more aggressive than the prem in certain ways even players like McNeil (if he stays) may not flourish as he’s very lightweight and dare we say cornet which we all know he prob won’t stay so the young lads who are ‘fearless’ may have a chance

Can’t see youth getting a good run this season unless it’s a freak situation where there’s no other way to turn a la McNeil.

Here's an outsider for you:
Dan Sassi, he's probably only 18 but he's got something about him.

Jacob Bedeau maybe. I'd like to see what he makes of any opportunity.

I don't see it as anything like a lottery. A bit more aggressive but a hell of a lot weaker. Players like McNeil would easily be allowed to do what we all want him to do - either take on the fullbacks and whip crosses in or play central and be a pain in the backside for Championship defenders. If Cornet stayed, crikey. He'd get 20-25 upfront no problem.

Didn't Bedeau transfer for around £1 million when he was 17/18?

Let's not forget we have 5 subs this season.

Dyche was always very reluctant to change his starting XI and was always criticised for not using his subs enough.

We know that we've got a hectic schedule in the Championship so it'll be interesting to see if VK changes things around a lot more and uses more players. That will create more opportunities than we had in the past.

BPF could well get more game time if VK doens't bring in a new keeper but I'm not sure that you can compare him with the U23s.

Phillips was viewed as a luxury player by Accy fans, perhaps he'll get some chances from the bench. I'd say this has to be his last chance and if he doesn't impress during pre-season I'd expect him to move on.

Good point on the 5 subs, and if our youngsters can't get game time under Kompany, who's not afraid to promote youth, then they clearly aren't good enough, and in that scenario we should seek to move a few on, even if it's for relatively modest returns, no point them pottering about in our development squads, when they could be getting regular matches at L1/2 level.

Lewis Richardson is the obvious one but please let him stay injury free.

Michael Mellon is raw but not but physically strong.

Dodgson and Costelloe are bigger lads.

Helm looks a player but he's not physically.

I like the look of Finn Armstrong.

Yeah McNeil will tear up the Norwich team now that they have become championship players he couldn’t last year cause they was premier league players, I mean guaranteed 20-25 goals let’s pay 17.5 mil ourselves and renegotiate!

What happened to Joel Mumbongo? Did he transfer permanently to Stanley?

Bump on Mumbongo, scored another two for Hudds on trial there. He's had so little game time in his career to date he really needs to find a club at whatever level and play some games. I feel like he could be a late developer and actually do alright for some reason.

Possibly needs a bit of perspective. He was playing for a B team against Scunthorpe Utd who are in the Natiional League following their relegation from League 2 after a dismal season.

Don't get me wrong I take your point but you can only score against what's infront of you and he now has 3 in 2. I always look out for former players and like to see how they get on. I think someone like Mumbongo with so little game time in his career so far could be a late developer if he can get games somewhere. I'm not saying he will ever be good enough to play for us but if he makes it at league one or above then he can be pretty happy.

As others have stated, with us dropping down a level the silver lining might just be that more opportunities are given to the better home grown youngsters. And like others I'm desperate to see Richardson staying fit and being given a chance as he's certainly got the potential. Mellon is in the younger group and probably slightly too young right now, but he's certainly one to keep hold of as he's every chance of making it. There's a clutch of others like Costello, Helm and Dodgson who might be expecting their chance and if they don't get it they could be off elsewhere. Helm in particular was very highly rated at Man U and I believe he actually came to us because he sensed he'd have more opportunities to actually break through. Thomas might be lucky to get much game time, if any, as it stands because we have Collins (for now) Long, Bellis, Riley and Mcnally, all of whom are probably ahead of him.

You are forgetting one simple thing RE McNeil.... he was playing to instructions. If we have the tricky, adventurous and very technically excellent McNeil that first broke into the side, the one who took a while to adapt to the `framework`, then he'll tear most teams defenders a new one. Be like a new signing.

I know a few Accy Stanley fans and none of them rate Mumbongo and my son who watches them said he is the worst footballer he has ever had to pay to watch!

I don't think he's breaking through this season anyway but his physical strength for his age is one of his best qualities IMO.

Remember he bullied Everton's defenders in the cup last season and their commentators couldn't believe he was only 17 at the time.

That's a really good question, Doug.
i've seen him play there, once I think.
watching the U23s when possible over the last couple of seasons I'd say right back has been a bit of a problem, Armstrong fills in there very well.

Re Mumbongo I saw him play for Accy once and on the day in question he looked like a non league player. But it’s a funny old game for strikers. A lot of them go from club to club then suddenly find their mojo.

Those commentators couldn’t believe he was Micky’s son given his size. He’s very big and strong for his age.

Dodgson looks like being a 1st team squad member now after penning his new 3 year contract.

And the more youngsters we can generate through our youth system the better.
