Question re haffners pies

Post by claret3561 » Mon Jun 27, 2022 6:02 pm

Odd question but I’m coming up from Gloucester on Friday for a birthday party, does anyone know if it’s possible to pre order a few pies to pick up from the keirby walk shop as they never seem to have enough to take home with me when I just pop in cheers. Not all for me by the way I’ve been asked by family and friends 😜😜

I’d give them a ring and see what they can do.

Not sure about Keirby Walk, but I'm fairly sure you can pre-order and pick up from the bakery on Marlborough Street.

Enjoy!

I live in Blackpool and every time I over go to Burnley I phone them on the number above and order what I want a day or so before hand, because they get annoyed when I turn up and wipe them out of pies, when I arrive they have them waiting in a tray for me, individually wrapped and marked what pie is what.. excellent pies excellent service

They really are top notch. I just wish they didn’t put crack in them

Understand the bakery has now been sold stc after being put up for sale in January. Shame if this means the end of the legendary Haffner pie.

Had one recently, as good as always.
New owner saying he has no intention of changing any recipes, why would he!

Haffner/Hafner is a good German name. I used to work with a man called Fritz Hafner at HuKla GmbH in Gengenbach in the Black Forest. HuKla used to have a furniture shop in Burnley !!

George Haffner was the founder of the company in Burnley but I'd no idea that he was German. His direct descendent now owns the company.

George Kristian Haffner arrived in England in 1879 at the age of 16 years and went to work for his uncle in Carlisle who already had a well established pork butcher’s business. In 1889 he opened his own pork butcher’s shop in Burnley accompanied by his wife, Karoline Rummler, another German immigrant who he married in Carlisle, and their first born son George Christian Alexander Haffner (the grandfather of John Haffner, the present managing director in the firm).

Burnley was chosen as the location for the business as the anticipated boom in cotton weaving was about to take off, as indeed is exactly what happened. Helped by his large family the enterprise prospered as the industrial population grew. Their first shop was at 33 Yorkshire Street and then to larger premises at 16 Yorkshire Street, where the other children were born (11 children in all) though 2 died in infancy. Four sons went to Burnley Grammar School and 3 of them (George, Billy and Harry) entered the family business. Three daughters went to the High School.

My eyes might have been deceiving me but I'm sure I saw them available in a supermarket in Bristol a couple of weeks ago. Lidl I think.
