Re: When you played footie in the park
I made up a whole team's worth of imaginary players so I could play in any position. My captain was called Peter Jackson (no, not the ex Bradford City player or the film director, just a figment of my own imagination).

I was booting a balloon around the front room earlier, I was Ashley Barnes. I elbowed the table, fell over when the Mrs walked by me and then I was Scott Twine bending the balloon into the top corner at Ewood Park from the resulting free kick !

Re: When you played footie in the park
Keegan
I didn't know it the time or care - but beans on toast, egg on toast, cheese on toast etc became almost daily teatime.
Couple of days before birthday went shopping with Mum, took a diversion to Sport shop - one I always liked looking in, one I spent my saved earned pocket money in on Subbuteo stuff - the odd team (a big buy) sticky numbers, a winter ball, spring goalkeeper etc...
That Day I came out with my 1st New (not handed down from cousons) football boots.
I got to pick them.
Patrick.
Those two stripes made me Keegan,
The leather boots were my pride, polished after use back to new for months. Naturally they were bought "a size or two bigger so I would get longer use from them". Actually wore double socks and packed some of the toe end with loo roll. Sort of a Keegan Penguin.
On my Birthday, Pork Chop, Mash and Peas + Patrick boots.
Next purchase from the shop a few months later... Studs
I've Still got the shoe box.
Inside it, Test MatchCricket pieces - Remember that? String on a Hoover Bat etc.
Back then, With two strpe boots Keegan I now was.

Always Andy Payton, occasionally Dennis Wise or Michael Owen
I’m 33 now and the lads at footy still claim to be a certain player before we start our 6aside league games

Alan Ball. I was small and fast, never stopped running.
I had the yellow and blue away kit which I loved but never managed to buy the white boots.

Re: When you played footie in the park
In 1962 or thereabouts, we were first let out on the grass pitches at junior school during our sports period. We just played on our own - no teacher. The ball came to me in my own half and I just whacked it as hard as I could towards the opponents goal. It bounced about four times, the goalie who was useless fell over and the ball bounced over him and into the goal - no nets of course. When we got back to the classroom to change the teacher came up to me and said 'I hear you scored a Bobby Charlton'. I'd no idea what that was, some technical term I assumed!

I still play walking football 2/3 times a week. I managed to get a pair of all black astroturf boots. When I used them the first time the rest of the lads were gobsmacked and intrigued as to where I got them.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Tue Jun 28, 2022 7:46 amNowadays its more of a mission to buy black football boots.....

Agree. They were a breath of fresh air and ultimately lost the final to West Germany because of their arrogance and in at least one case, hatred of the opposition that came from midfielder Wim van Hanegem.

He’s doing well and visits this way for family and to catch up with his old teammates! He always manages a few home games on the Turf each season.
