Interesting read. Could be a crocodile or a catfish. Either way, creepy goings on in Ullswater.

I was only on the Ullswater steamer the weekend before last. Wish I'd known about this as I'd have taken the wife's bathing costume and arm bands!

I'm pleased and happy to repeat the news that we have in fact caught and killed a large predator that supposedly injured some bathers. But as you can see, it's a beautiful day, the beaches are opened, and people are having a wonderful time. Amity, as you know, means friendship.

The goose must have been a whopper too. The average adult greylag is 7 pounds or so, and a few exceptional males grow to 11 pounds, so if this one was 10-12 pounds ...

Don't put a newborn baby in the lake. (hopefully you weren't going to!) I wouldn't worry about anything bigger. Crocodiles come up to breathe, so if there's one there I think it might be hard to hide.

It'll be Nessy having a change from Blackpool.

I did once see a catfish grab a woodpigeon that was having a drink. I've seen ducks disappear, never a full grown goose. Certainly not impossible.

There are catfish in this country weighing over 100lbs. though the Lakes wouldn't be their first choice - too cold.

People buy them and they very quickly outgrow their tanks, their owners are reluctant to or unwilling to rehome them so let then go in the wild where they can grow even more depending on the food supply.

I saw a pike drag a duck down once, a pike killed a full grown duck on Lowerhouse I think last year. The video only showed the aftermath of feathers.
Biggest English predator is the pike, no way it took down a goose full grown or not.

A wels catfish however could easily do that.they can grow over 300lbs.

A lady Ichatted to who has an allotment told me she took it over and there were three in a pond, she put them in the canal here in Burnley. People really are that stupid to put none native fish in canals and rivers.

They breed very easily and will eat just about anything, with a mouth big enough to eat any fish in the Uk.

Midsomer Murders on right now ... part of the storyline revolves around a legendaty predator fish "Ahab" the monster of the lake ...

I actually saw turtle in the Leeds/Liverpool near Wheelton last year when I was out walking on the towpath. I subsequently read that you're supposed to report them as they are invasive and spreading.

DEFRA down in Poole actively investigate information and sightings of invasive fish / crustaceans.
There are many instances of people releasing American Cray fish into rivers and streams which quickly decimate local crustaceans and small fish populations.

The invasion of the Signal Crayfish is irreversible now. They turn up in every single waterway I visit.

Wasn’t there a Nessie type in Windermere few years back coming upto peak holiday season ?

I fished a water in Oxford last year. The bailiff told me they had removed 5 tonnes of crays that spring from the fishery, but it was still crawling with them. Seriously up to the size of lobsters. I caught a small one.

Probably a big pike of even a Wels (large type of catfish) that someone has introduced.

Deffo a otter I would say there ruining fisheries all over Britain- there killing 30lb carp so this goose will be its starter. They don’t eat it all they kill it have a bit of a munch and leave the majority of the body.

I've seen a few Otters in action, and they have no problem in dealing with hefty lumps - a 20lb carp is no problem. And contrary to belief, they do eat waterbirds.

You think they would have seen some sign of it, they do stick their heads out a lot to breathe, and it would literally have to drag the goose to the shore on the surface - that's how they move their prey.

In other words, the goose wouldn't simply disappear. Not an Otter for me.
