Pies .Why Hollands?

Post by The Enclosure » Wed Jun 29, 2022 1:32 pm

There is another thread on the forum regarding Haffners pies and it got me thinking why Burnley F C chose to go with Hollands Pies.
I realise that at one point they were our sponsors but that was some time ago.
I think the majority would agree that Hollands pies are pretty average, not awful but there are much better pies available and what is the reason we never changed to Haffners.
My first thoughts are
1.Haffners could not compete on price ( I for one would not mind paying a bit more for a quality product)
2. Haffners would possibly not individually wrap their pies which is probably essential if supplying pies to the Turf.I imagine the Capital expense of installing packaging machinery would not be economically feasible.

Anyone else have any views on this?

Sorry enclosure but I’m a Hollands man. Never had a Haffners so can’t compare but to call Hollands average is just wrong.

I would imagine Haffners don’t have the set up to supply the club with the volume it needs. They could have some ambition and get a contract with the club and use that contract to help them get a loan to upscale, however the quality would probably drop if they upscaled, defeating the purpose of wanting a change

For what it's worth, I'm from York, but we spend a fortune on pies at the Turf - certainly helps to take your mind off the footie.

I have definitely had pies from other grounds that were not in plastic wrapping.

Probably a matter that the current offering sells well ? Rare any pies are left in the CFS when I try at HT !

I don’t want a quality meal at the turf. I want a soggy-pastried lump of molten meat-mush in a foil tray.

Absolutely beautiful

It won’t matter what pies are sold if they can’t store them correctly at the ground.

IMO the Hollands pies sold at the ground are not the same quality as those sold elsewhere.

The pastry is either far too soggy that you can’t pick it up or that crispy you could use it as a knife and the filling is as sloppy as soup which is either luke warm or lava like

Holland’s pies are now just full of tasteless mush, their meat pies are edible and their puddings are quite tasty. Mrs Vino and I sometimes have their meat pies or puddings with mushy peas for dinner, it’s a nice taste of home.
However to compare them with Haffners is nonsense. Fortunately, we have a local English baker over here called Porky Pies, who make all homemade pies and cakes etc. Their wares are very good indeed.

To answer the original question i would guess it is down to scale - it would take a hell of a ramp up from their usual volumes to cater for a football crowd once a fortnight for 9 months a year. Hollands are a mass producer so will have the volume to manufacture and store sufficient quantity.

And anyone who considers Hollands to be better than Haffners clearly knows absolutely nothing about pies. The only thing i can say about Hollands is that they are better than the Pukka pies that are sold in chip shops in my area.

The Holland pies you buy on the ground are like soup inside.
Didn't we once have a proper bakery do the pies a while back? (Clayton's)? Why were they ditched?

It would take a lot of investment for 23 days extra business a year. ( Packaging machinery, freezers etc).

Why Hollands?

Volume, freshness, cost and they are extremely flexible.

On a side note the flour used at hollands is bespoke to them and its in house name is - Claret Flour (I named it, although that was around 14 years ago and it may have changed now). Before claret flour was used it was called Ternant Flour

My memory is not what it was and I may well have imagined it.

Clayton Park was the firm, and yes, they were very good.
They're still going, and available in Morrison's, among other places. Don't know why we got shut.

I love their chicken & mushroom. Oh, and their meat & potato, meat, meat & onion, pork. Even their sausage rolls are lush, and I'm not that big on sausage rolls.

Anyroad, I hope the potential new owners don't intend to expand or ramp up production, and quality ends up taking a hit. The reason why Haffner's pies are so good is because they are a small company with hands-on owner.

Haffner’s on the Turf with a Bovil would be a thing of pure beauty and class.

Worked at Hollands as a student in the early 70's and loved it. They paid extremely well especially if overtime on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings were included. Managed to travel back down to London on the train a couple of times as a result.

Haffners anyday over Hollands. Haffners Meat and Onion with ketchup on....yum yum. The best Meat and Potato pie though is Clayton Park by an absolute country mile. Proper chunks of meat and potato (unlike the slop that is Hollands) and a nice peppery taste. Haffners are good though too.

Hollands pies are OK but I would rather have a hot "Pukkah Pies" Balti Pie ...

Haven't had a pie at Footy for ages

Which would make them a bit special in sports stadium terms; I think there's some immutable international law (a bit like gravity) which states that all food - especially pies - sold at any sports event shall be both sh1te and expensive.

Are there any Australian Clarets on here? Do you still get the 'Four and Twenty' pies down there? They were the worst I ever came across, the ones pre-injected with an igneous dollop of tomato sauce inside them were especially awful.

As a regular pie eater at the Tirf, I can confirm it would make no difference as the catering staff would still manage to burn them when reheating.

Hollands are an “ above average pie” mass produced , cheaper than Haffners /Pukka etc. Their pies are a mass market made on a budget ,and for that they’re very decent . If they upped the quality 30% they’d be in the prime end of the market, which isn’t their target .

Haffners are good fresh bakery pies but for fans as tight as Burnleys ( who constantly moan at the prices , the beer and the fayre on offer ) doesn’t seem a likely move .
