Your Favourite Film Actors/Actresses

Post by ecc » Thu Jun 30, 2022 10:41 am

If you love cinema as I do, chances are you'll like a lot of actors and actresses.

It might be interesting not only to put the name of the person but also the films he/she's made you've enjoyed the most.

No limits to the number of times an actor/actress can be named.

And please: respect other people's opinions.

I'll start the ball rolling with a man starring in a film I started watching on Amazon last night (not finished as it's long and TBH tough watching it due to the nature of the film).

Jake Gyllenhaal.

I've seen five of his films and, apart from Spiderman which he didn't really need to act in, he's been excellent in all of them.

Jarhead (2005)

Zodiac (2007)

End of Watch (2012)

The Sisters' Brothers (2018)

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) Only saw because I took my son.

Am currently watching "Stronger" in which he plays the role of Jeff Bauman, a man who lost both legs during the Boston Marathon bombings. This is a hard film to watch but Jake Gyllenhaal is superb.

What I particularly like about him is his desire to act in independent films often as a producer. They are often box office failures but his career approach seems to be: choose screenplays and roles he wants to do and throw in the occasional "big earner" to enable him to do the former without worrying (in relative terms) about the films losing money.

I'm hoping to see "Brokeback Mountain" one day because he and Heath Ledger were brave to take those roles on.

Andrew Garfield is pretty epic in whatever film he's in. A personal favourite is Hacksaw Ridge. He's also my favourite Spider-Man.

John Candy for me. Just a huge huge part of my childhood.

For me Planes, Trains & Automobiles is the absolute perfect comedy. The chemistry between he and Steve Martin is superb.
Uncle Buck
The Great Outdoors
Spaceballs
Stripes
Home Alone (minor Part)
Cool Runnings
Splash
Blues Brothers (minor part)

All superb - in my opinion. Even in his minor part roles he could always steal a scene.

He just seemed like such a likeable guy as well.

Gary Oldman

The man is the epitome of a chameleon.

Lee Harvey Oswald - JFK
Drexel - True Romance
Stansfield - Leon (One of my favourite villains)
Jim Gordon - Dark Knight Trilogy

Don't see him in that much but I always think Edward Norton is , or certainly was, a really compelling and intense actor :
American History X
Fight Club
25th Hour
Down in the Valley
Red Dragon

Stephen Graham has raised the bar for TV acting in recent years I think.

I think John Candy is still missed, even to this day. He could play goofy, but relatable characters really well despite being in family films and R-Rated movies too. I can't think of another actor who can still do that... maybe Jack Black...? but he doesn't have Candy's warmth.

Apart from a few of movies, such as The Departed, Limitless and The Joker... De Nero's movies over the last 20 years have been turd in my opinion. He's done much more garbage than good films overall. He is brilliant in the good films though.

Yeah would have to agree with that. Comedy and De Niro don’t mix for me.

I missed Goodfellas and Jackknife of my original list…

Tom Hanks.

Castaway, Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, Philadelphia, Big, Sleepless in Seattle..

There are so many, it's hard to pick a small number of favourites.
I'm struggling to name any poor films he's been in tbh.

Like others: De Niro and Gary Oldman spring to mind.

Pacino, Morgan Freeman, Samuel L Jackson, Denzel Washington and Jeff Bridges.

Marion Cotillard, Helen Mirren, Judie Dench, Olivia Colman

Quite a few I've forgotten probably....

Seann William Scott - American Pie 2 is one of the best films ever and Seann's role as Stifler (the stiffmeister) is one of the all time comedy performance in cinematic history.

Clearly Hanks is a top actor and has been in a number of iconic films. But don't you find that he plays the same part in about 80% of his films? He's the stoic, humble, American hero.

Also a fan of Gyllenhaal - first came across him in Donnie Darko which is a must watch if you haven't.

I'll throw a couple more into the mix; Philip Seymour Hoffman and Frances McDormand. Adam Driver is one of my current favourites.

John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. If I coudln’t be a footballer I was determined I would become a cowboy as a kid. I now hope that scientists are right and time is not linear and that somewhere I am living the dream elsewhere in the multiverse.

Doesn't bother me, I just like his films and if that's his niche then fair play to him.

Same with Samuel L Jackson being the bloke who swears a lot

I think you're always safe with a Tom Hanks film, he puts in a brilliant performance every time - theres no denying that, but the films are not challenging in anyway. He plays people-pleasing characters. He did say that he looking to take more risks in the films he undertakes now though. I'd like to see him do something more adventurous myself. He's got nothing to prove.

Dana Andrews. He's just watchable in a low key sort of way.

A Walk in the Sun
The Best Years of Our Lives
Boomerang
Laura
The Ox Bow Incident

Robert Donat. The same really, but with added wit).

39 Steps
Goodbye Mr Chips
Lease of Life

Will Hay (Oh Mr Porter and others). Along with his two co-conspiriters Moore Marriot and Graham Moffit, just silly and hilarious at times.

Then there's two actor directors with their own take on life: Jacques Tati (Mon Oncle etc.), Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful and others).

Stephen Graham is excellent in everything I have seen him in. Ralph Feinnes (sp) is great, as is Denzel. Also, christoph waltz.

Massive fan of Pete Postlethwaite too. And Benedict cumberpatch, or ‘Q’ as he’s known to his mates…

for the female parts, I like Judi dench, and suranne Jones. Robin Wright in house of cards was superb.

I like Dennis Hopper. I have watched Blue Velvet many times, it’s a ‘must see’ for film students… but to say I liked it would be stretching it; in fact I’d say Bobby Vinton’s singing is the only thing that immediately springs to mind about it now (it’s been about 20 years since I last watched it).
