A bit harsh on Overton after his match-winning 97 runs on debut but he is in the team as a bowler and, on that count, Anderson wins hands down.

I thought he bowled pretty well too. Certainly his extra pace added something different. May have deserved to have kept his place at Potts' expense but that would be very harsh on Potts who has done nothing wrong.

You simply have to play Anderson in English conditions, I think even he will know that deep down. I’d imagine its Jimmys last summer in England so his time will come soon

That would have been extremely harsh on Potts! Drop England's leading wicket-taker from the series?

I think that Overton did well. He wasn't maybe up at the speeds some may have expected, often being 4 or 5 mph slower than some said he would be and he had a few wayward balls but overall, he did bowl well and needless to say, his innings was vital!

The only way that he wouldn't have been dropped was if they wanted to rest Broad for this Test but probably after missing out on the Windies series, Broad would not have been happy with a rest.

It's very harsh on Overton but I don't think Stokes used him that well to be honest. All the short bowling when he's a swing bowler.

There's a lot of competition for bowling spots in England, especially as they all come back fit again.

Has Crawley got some dodgy photos of Stokes.
He certainly isnt in the team on merit.

Or the England coaching setup start trying to mess around with his action.

Looking forward to going on Saturday. A 2 mile commute to a test match is always more refreshing than some of the journeys can be!

Bumrah as captain for them is an interesting choice.

Always in the plan to go up to this test for the chances. 100% believe Compton should open in the South Africa series. Crawley should be nowhere near the squad, he isn’t even the best batter in his county.

He'll surely want to play in the Ashes next summer, I do agree you generally play Jimmy in home conditions, but equally his workload will need managing these days, which is why it might not be a bad thing he missed the 3rd test against NZ.

I hope so, I also think Anderson would play for ever if they’d pick him 😂

I'd anticipated Overton being dropped in favour of Jimmy; my suspicion was that having won the series, JA was rested rather than injured for Headingly.

Anyone expecting Crawley dropped could be waiting a while. The new coach loves him. He said thousands of batters can do the blocking, but not many can do the stuff he can.

There's certainly a good batsman in there, and he times it as well as any. He just gets out too early at the minute.
But this England team will want players being aggressive early on.

Jimmy adding 2 more to his tally before the rain arrived, 53-2 both openers gone, inspection due about now, but more rain in the air, so they might be waiting a while to get back on I'm afraid.

Some innings this by Pant, and this stand is completely changing the course of the day, 150 partnership and India playing in a similar manner to which England have batted all summer.

So England hoping to wrap up these last 3 wickets quickly, then strap yourself in for the white knuckle ride of our batting, one thing for sure it won't be dull viewing.

100 for Jadeja, and the 350 up for India, England need to nip this innings in the bud.

35 off that over, but England will continue to persist with this short ball tactic against the tail-enders, what's wrong with just bowling line and length outside the off stump, if it works against the premier batters it'll surely work against 10 and 11.

Not for the first time I have to say, brainless cricket and it cost plenty of runs, which now makes England's task harder with the bat.

I’d love to hear the reason why we think 80mph short stuff works, tailenders aren’t like they used to be, all can pull a 80 mph short delivery because of the amount of T20 cricket they play.
5/60, good figures from the genius as usual

We are going to carry on being more aggressive but when it’s not working they need to find the middle ground.

Aggressions fine but it needs to be done correctly, and putting 7 men on the boundary just hands the initiative to the batting side, if the short ball tactic is being deployed effectively then there needs to close fielders making the batsmen think twice about playing their shots.

And what's wrong with throwing in the odd slower ball or yorker, if the batsmen knows what coming they can premeditate their strokes.

I’m sure they’ll learn from it.
It’s a new approach with a new captain so everything’s not going to go right straight away. Just needed someone there to tell them to calm down for a minute.

Anderson and Broad are hardly rookies are they, and it shouldn't need the captain to be telling them how to best utilise a new ball.

No they are not and Broad clearly got carried away, less so Anderson. But it’s clear to a blind man on a galloping horse they are bowling to instructions.
They’ll learn from it as a team.

They’re just teeing this up for entertainment. Give India an easy 50 runs at the end of their innings to make the target more challenging. Lose a few early wickets then into ODI mode. We’ll have won the test by this time tomorrow.
