Someone needs to tell me what Crawley offers?

He’s like the David Price of cricket, everyone tells you he’s a world beater in practise but bottles it on the big stage
You can have all the ability in the world but if you don’t produce when on the stage, it’s worthless unfortunately. Averages 18 ffs

It's got to be close to the tipping point with Crawley, he's been given chance after chance, and simply not delivered, yes all players can suffer dips in form, but his is going on for an awful long time.

Let's be honest could Buttler fare any worse than Crawley is recently, he might fail now and again, but equally he could also rack up a quick 50 or 60, so at least if England lost a couple of early wickets we'd have some runs on the board when Root comes to the crease.

“Crawley has been out 11 times between 2020-21 season while playing a front-foot attacking shot. One out of every 15 front foot-attacking-shots he has played has resulted in him getting out and it's the worst amongst all top-order batters across the world”

Unbelievable really

I agree but I also like to see a batter that has the temperament to sit there for a full day, nudging around.
I just don’t feel that’s the answer against the best bowlers in the world, (not sure what the answer is at the minute)

Crawley errs too much on the risk side as opposed to the reward, top class bowlers will find him out driving on the up.

Time for Compton.

Sibley did that, but the problem with him was the scoreboard never moved along, I'm a traditionalist as well, but the modern game isn't played in that manner anymore, it was always going to prove a difficult test facing this Indian attack, as Bumrah and Shami are top class operators.

This might be too controversial for some, but why not open with Root. After all he’s found himself in that position on many occasions recently.
He could fill the gap left by Alastair Cooke, has the right technique and temperament and would move the scoreboard along when it’s most needed. This would leave a gap down the order for Buttler to make his comeback.

An interesting premise, and given Root is often walking out to the middle after 4/5 overs anyway, what would be the obvious difference.

The opening slots aren't specifically an England problem though, as many countries are struggling up top these days, and usually the key contributions are coming from the middle order players, certainly that's been the case this summer anyway.

Surely if England are employing a pro-active approach Buttler has to be found a slot, even an hour of him batting could potentially change the flow of a game.

Good player and you do wonder if his batting his given him a boost prior to his bowling stint, a lot resting on Root again, but thankfully he looks in good touch.

I don’t think we’ll see much more play today. Absolutely bucketing it down here and forecast rain till 6ish. Ideally would want to avoid batting this evening and go again tomorrow in more favourable conditions.

England would certainly be the happier of the 2 teams if there's no further play today, the constant stop/start nature of the play rarely helps the batting side, and allows the bowlers to rest and then come steaming in again, well also not allowing the batting unit to build any fluency.

Shame for the fans attending, but that's the UK summer for you.

Prospect of play starting at 6PM, and they can continue until 7, so a nightmare scenario for England an hour where they could lose 2/3 wickets, but won't make any progress in the game.

You’d imagine these two have both got to ton up tomorrow for us to have any chance of staying in the game.

Shami and Bumrah have both bowled brilliantly today. As mentioned above though it’s the same old story from Crawley, Root didn’t look settled at all. Big challenge tomorrow to stay in this game.

Someone's going to have to put a partnership on that's for sure, yes England got out of jail in a similar situation against NZ, but this Indian side are on a different level bowling wise to NZ.

Put simply England need to bat most of tomorrow to get near 416, and they will do well to score at 4-5 runs an over against this quality over after over.

Kent batting averages this season:

Compton 86.66
Bell-Drummond 63.63
Denly 53.50
Leaning 51.57

Crawley 30.20

A conspiracy theorist would probably suggest Key doesn’t want to weaken Kent’s batting lineup staying away from Compton and DBD.

Also:

Most single digit scores in test cricket since 2020

22 - Zak Crawley
14 - Mominul Haque
14 - Ajinkya Rahane
14 - Dom Sibley

136
162
71*
100*

6 more to reach 500 in the four matches

It’s going to take something daft like what Bumrah did to Broad to get anywhere near their score now.
