I have been following the Prem since we left.
Those 2 players are very clever.
They might be, but neither of them have bagged twenty goals at championship level.
Barnes will do what Barnes does, play for a free kick and fall over at every opportunity.

Can't see Kompany being enamoured by Barnes' usual antics (though Twine's set pieces mean some cheap fouls would actually be more useful) but Jay has enough quality and intelligence to be an asset this season. You'd guess both will probably feature more off the bench though if Muleka and Twine are seen as starters.

Hi Bill. Did the prolific Jimmy Greaves have any pace? Geoff Hurst? Teddy Sherringham? Andy Lochead? Charlie Austin? Speed is not always an essential requirement for a goal scorer. Anticipation and reading the game are big assets.
And all the above were streets ahead of either Jay or Ashley Barnes. Jimmy Greaves was streets and a couple of towns ahead of the others.

Teddy Sheringham was a great player I recall going to White Hart Lane and he marmalised us.
Can't remember which year or what cup or the names of any other Spurs player or even my own name but he was superb.

The game has changed dramatically since Greaves and Hurst's days.

Most definitely has but the ball still needs putting in the net and Jimmy Greaves was a master at it.

I can see both being useful squad players in different ways, Jay in particular. One does wonder whether they represent good value though... Best of luck to both of them though

I think there is far greater emphasis on athleticism now.

Whilst that is an opinion, to which you are entitled, Fidel, I think it is a bit derogatory about a fine Claret.

Not really. Barnes is a very limited footballer.

Again, I disagree. His chest control and ball holding is superb. His heading is decent and his snap shooting sharp. Buries penalties too!

That's because you always watch a different game.

Oh I do. I also don't expect keepers to save shots that are going wide.
So go on, when did Barnes last get anywhere near 20 goals in the championship?

It would be a brave man who would predict Barnes will do anything worthwhile next season.
Jay Rod will be class at this level , unfortunately he is too injury prone for us to get the required number of games out of him for him to have any influence when we need it.
A new striker is of paramount importance. Proven not a kid

Are these going to be surplus to requirements, I just read an interview with Kompany where he must have been asked about playing staff and retaining players. He said the club needed to do what it felt right and he will be judged on what happens after his appointment but understands why the club offered existing players contracts, he then said he was really glad to have kept Corky, but no mention of Jay and Barnes. I think we can all see these guys are going to look odd in a Kompany team, not saying it won't work, but don't seem to fit, could we see either leave?
I felt they were surplus to requirements already, Jay might have 1 year in the Championship left in him but he's been goalshy for a while and Barnes has never been the same since his injury- his cameo at Watford doesn't change that. But then again I'm also an oddity in that I cannot stand his flailing about and falling over for free kicks- I know a lot of our fans love him doing those antics, but dirty tricks are dirty tricks no matter whose team you're on. Still cheating. Attractive football doesn't constitute diving, gamesmanship and jelly legs for me, I have much more pride in a Burnley team that plays "unattractive" but honest, firm-yet-fair football, than a Burnley that has flair but also cheats.
I'd have been okay with 1 year for Jay upon relegation, but that's about it. I'd personally have had Pieters, Cork, Vydra and especially Mee ahead of both in the renewal stakes, and possibly even Lennon at Championship level- and that doesn't mean I'd have sought to retain all of them either.

Struggling to see what Jay offered last season that Ash didn't. Apart from being local or whatever

Remind me of the last time either of them scored twenty championship goals?
Barnes - never. Most he's scored is 18 in 2010-11
I think Ian is being optimistic. I'd advise him to ask skybet for a price.

Their ‘value’ might be in the dressing room - team morale etc?

I was starting to convince myself Jay might prove successful in the Championship then I see he was not fit enough to start v Rochdale. He was very injury prone last season when we most needed him

I can see them featuring from the bench only this season.
Muleka and another will most likely start the majority of games

This is my biggest worry about our older heads, how will they cope with the rapid nature of Championship games, it's a hectic schedule up until the WC, 7 games alone before the window shuts, and although it's a long Championship season, these early games do matter, as last season aptly showed.
Jay Rod and Barnes could have an important role to play, but if we're relying on both to start week in week out we're asking an awful lot given their respective ages, and niggling injury record of recent times.

Think both will play a part, Jay more than Barnes. I do feel that people do underrate both of their technical abilities. They also obviously both have a lot of experience and are team players.
One of them partnering a younger player like Muleka, Twine (though I anticipate he'll end up more a wide man/10) or even Richardson/Costelloe/Mellon will be the most effective option and allow the younger partner to shine.
If Jay can stay fit I would not be surprised for him to score 15 goals this season.

I can see Barnes scoring a dozen or so goals this coming season, but they'll most likely be in Division 1.

Jay will probably do alright, he's technically a very good footballer.
Barnes is as far the opposite of a VK type player as you can find.
Hope to be proven wrong.
