Because he was promised reasonable funding to strengthen but let’s not pretend it hasn’t come at a cost & the plan is only sustainable until the parachute payments are in place, the longer top flight wilderness continues the harder it will become, VK will have his targets to hit. SD did tremendously well during his tenure & it’s a non argument he made us more of an attractive draw.claretbob wrote: ↑Fri Aug 05, 2022 3:00 pmIf we hadn’t spent so long in the Prem playing Dyche’s so called “dinosaur” football does anyone think for one minute that Kompany would have agreed to manage us? Our profile was raised enormously by SD and if as we all hope the VK style is both easy on the eye and effective it’s a clear win-win.
Can anyone imagine VK agreeing to manage Blackpool or Rovers this summer?

In answer to the OP, I would suppose it is for now. It’ll be back tho….
If a young foreign manager brings it back, it will be a refreshing change of tactics. If someone like SD joins another club and plays it, it’ll be dinosaur football.

Plenty of teams like Luton play direct, uncompromising football in the Championship, and good luck to them as it's the only way they have a chance of getting promoted to the PL.

Got to say that the vast majority of Championship sides play quite direct football so the likelihood is that at least a couple of the sides getting promoted this season will take that game plan into the PL next year.

Have you been asleep for two or three years? Who did Dyche sign 2 or 3 years ago? Stephens. 5 games Stephens and I dont actily believe that was his sugni g and neither were Cornet or Weghorst. He was starved of funds. I just don't understand how you cant see that. Oh and playing it out from the back served us well yesterday ddidn't it.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 05, 2022 9:17 amI know what you mean but why are we the only side that didn’t do it, he signed the players, they weren’t inherited.
I’m not knocking him at all because evidently it worked well for us.
I’d love to see him back in the premier league with a decent side and see how his tactics change.

They might take that game plan into the PL but when getting carved open week upon week the tactics will change sure as eggs.
Re: Is long-ball football dead?
Sorry if this has been mentioned already on this thread, but our first goal yesterday came from a long ball.
Proving the long ball has its place in the game. I do like how we play now though,

Re: Is long-ball football dead?
The 2 through balls played by THB were to a player.
The hopeful high ball punted into the opposition's defence with the intention of winning the ball back is the tactic which we used all too often.

Re: Is long-ball football dead?
I’d say that was an incredibly accurate, intentional long pass. Long ball football is more when defenders just punt it up to a target man looking for flick ons etc. Much like we did under Dyche for most of the last couple of years.

Re: Is long-ball football dead?
In my opinion, there will always be a place for the ‘long ball’ option and rightly so! For me, it’s about picking the right pass/option at the right time because at this level these guys can drill a 60 yard pass on a dime!
In relation to our new keep ball style of play, I think it’s important that when attacking we keep possession and be patient or else risk giving the ball away before being hit on the counter which lots of teams are clearly going to try to do especially at t’Turf!
I therefore suspect that our away form might be stronger, at least for the first half of the season, as the home team may be more attack minded due to playing at home.
When we have it at the back, keep ball yes, but there is a risk of overplaying in stupid areas which will cost us goals. I’m all for trying to play out, but at times the better decision might be for our keeper or defender to play a long pass to avert disaster such as their first goal yesterday! I reiterate ‘long pass’ as opposed to simply hoofing it up field aimlessly.
One things for sure, long ball play is much easier to get right instead of playing short passes out of your own 6-yard box, but I know which style of football I would prefer to watch!

Yes, I take your point. This wasn’t just a launch in the air and hope it doesn’t come straight back, it was directed.
