Enjoying MOTD again

Post by ŽižkovClaret » Fri Aug 05, 2022 9:30 am

Is it just me who is actually looking forward to watching MOTD without being p****d off at being patronised by pundits etc?

We can make a brew, and see how former players are doing, hopefully after already seeing how we pulverised another puny Championship team on ITV4 ;)

Not sure I want to see our ex players plying their trade elsewhere.

I think for me it depends on the player for me? Cornet, Trippier, Collins, im curious and hope they do well.

Wood can go f**k himself, and his comfort zone ;)

The 1 programme that does need a shake up.

Time Lineker and Shearer were removed. Even BT have managed to boot Jake Humphrey off Premier League games for being dull

BT punditry is pathetic, not a patch on MOTD.

I'd rather keep up with outline events in EPL by just watching the very edited highlights of each match on SkySports website.
If they just had footy highlights on MotD, I'd watch but no way will I spend my time listening to Lineker, Shearer etc babbling on inanely.

Main interest will be the Championship highlights now anyway; lots of new players to see/assess.

Highly unlikely I’ll watch it now, I only watched it anyway when we won or got a good draw.

Goals on Sunday on sky was my preferred choice.

Focused on all teams equally and decent presenters in the main

Would prefer them to show more of the games on MOTD but to be fair to Shearer he’s really good with his analysis now.
He was awful when he started.

Don't get the hate for MotD..the punditry is usually pretty insightful and amusing at times. Sure Lineker is overpaid but you could level that charge at many, many people (including most footballers). Agree that it will be good to watch it as a "neutral".

Time Lineker his ego and salary were removed. Shearer and Murphy I like. Not that bothered how ex players do for other clubs. Just how they do for us. Would I be upset if the likes of Tarkowski and McNeil flopped at Everton and they were relegated. No. Will be nice to see other clubs get a thrashing against Man City and Chelsea and for them be expecting no points before kick off.

I don't watch it very often, but only because its on a bit late for me these day, but when I do watch it, I enjoy it

I think the football analysis is good, the presenter does a good job and it looks like they are having fun, and that translates well into one of the reasons I like watching it

But when people start going on about how they don't like Lineker, and his salary as a reason not to watch it, then that is just silly

And then turn it off. Awful program.

For those posters wishing our ex players flop at their new clubs, just remember we've got a vested interest in many of them doing well due to add on's in the deals agreed, if they don't meet those targets, then we'll miss out on a fair chunk of potential transfer income.

As for MOTD I rarely watched it when were in the PL, so I doubt i'll tune in now, but the presenters are decent enough.

I have no problem with MOTD apart from last season, I tend not to watch when we get beat. Maybe there are occasions where their highlights miss something I thought was significant in the game, but I think the program is OK. Not sure why people moan about it as much as they do.

I don’t rate Lineker et al as pundits, not because of their salaries, nor their knowledge of football. I don’t rate them because they are complicit in the level of cheating and corruption that men’s football has sunk to. Every time one of them says something like “there was contact so he was entitled to go down” they justify the blatant cheating.
I was skeptical about women’s footy but it was a breath of fresh air compared to the cesspit of men’s, that is until I heard one pundit say “they need to get more streetwise”. We all know what that means.
When the likes of Lineker grow a pair and start calling out the cheats instead of being apologists for them then maybe they will deserve a bit more respect.

I used to rate Lineker as a footballer and initially as a presenter. The issue is he gets more and more arrogant by the season and they could get a lot better to do the job for less money.

The only way to watch MOTD is record it, then fast forward between games.
Lineker does my head in, and most of the pundits are the same. There's only Danny Murphy who sounds like he has a clue.

Lineker’s an excellent presenter tbh , in an era so bereft of great sports anchormen and these ludicrous quota line ups , at least GL keeps it tight and of course knows the sport intimately. His politics are his own .

No-one tunes in to MOTD to watch Lineker (or Sheare et al).
We tune in to see the football.
To that extent, you could have (virtually) any Tom, Dick or Harry "presenting", let alone one on £1M + per year out of BBC licence tax - sorry, fee.
As for his politics being " his own", fair enough but he uses his media presence to grandstand and show his political credentials.
I can't stand the bloke and turn the sound off when he's on.

So what?

He co-presents the most popular football
highlights show on TV and is fairly rewarded for it.

He also expresses his views independently on social media.

I don't suppose you'd be so critical if his political view matched yours.

Re last sentence: Of course thats the case - just like you'd be more critical if his views didnt match yours.

Re the "So what?": When Tim Davie started his new job as BBC's DIrector General, he said that the BBC must “urgently… champion and recommit to impartiality“.

Also (an actual quote).....
“If you want to be an opinionated columnist or a partisan campaigner on social media then that is a valid choice, but you should not be working at the BBC.”

It does seem that Gary is above that and that the BBC's DG isnt really that committed to impartiality and is actually reasonably happy that the BBC is a hotbed of overt leftism (rather than being unbiased and representative as the BBC's charter calls for).

He's hardly hurling Molotov cocktails down Whitehall is he !? He's just expressed some fairly ordinary liberal sentiments around refugees and expressed a personal opposition to Brexit (not really surprising for an evidently reasonably intelligent and articulate person who spent part of his career in Europe). If this is too strong for peoples' blood in terms of being "too political" then they really are part of the Daily mail hardcore ! Does a good job presenting MotD.

This is a good point. There were many times last season where I had recorded MOTD, but just watched the highlights on youtube from sky then forgot about it.

As a side issue. I hope the ITV highlights of the EFL improves, last week was not great

Got to admit I didn’t watch the whole lot, just the Championship section as I got bored

The issue is they have 30+ games to show so in the main are just going to show the goals rather than highlights

Looking forward to watching as I gave it a swerve more often than not last season, although it was enjoyable on the rare occasion we won.

Lineker does a good job and I think one of the reasons he’s such a popular presenter is that his political views are almost unanimously held by the rest of the country. He’s a spokesman for the masses.

As for his politics being " his own", fair enough but he uses his media presence to grandstand and show his political credentials.
I can't stand the bloke and turn the sound off when he's on.
Hilarious how much he winds you whoppers up. Hopefully he is presenting for a very long time as he’s very good at it.

Got to admit I didn’t watch the whole lot, just the Championship section as I got bored

The issue is they have 30+ games to show so in the main are just going to show the goals rather than highlights
I liked the Quest show, but mainly when they had proper pundits such as Ali Maxwell and George Elek who actually seem to know a bit about the EFL
