I agree, however, his speed will come. He is rusty after long difficult injury. Change of style. He is linking well.
His speed will come from where ?
This isn’t a Marvel film…..are you hoping he gets bitten by a cheetah and then magically finds speed he has literally never had ?

Yes and he will have a role to play, but anyone thinking he's gonna bag 20 this season is dreaming.
Anyone thinking any of this team will score 20.is dreaming.

Spends too much time trying to wind up defenders, whine at the ref, and falling over tonight. If you want to wind defenders up stick the ball in the back of the net.

He works hard, but that’s it, no real quality and that’s an issue.

Had any one noticed that he is playing up front on his own?

Thought we needed him and Jay tonight, especially in the 2nd half.

A trier who puts himself about a bit is not a good fit for this brand of football. Barnes had his day when Dyche played him as a twin, long-ball battering ram alongside Wood.

He no longer wins flick-ons, is now bullied by defenders and referees are fully aware of his “old pro” tactics. Sadly in the media he is still the face of Burnley and it’s an image that VK needs replace and reserve for cup games (only).

This evening our slow, ponderous build-ups needed a quick, intelligent striker (like Vydra) to make the sort of runs that open up defences like Watford, and before them, Luton. Barnes is not the man for the job.

Barnes is getting way too much flak. Its become a stupid trend.
He did nothing wrong, his abilities shouldn't be ridiculed when the rest of his team mates failed to offer much.
Numerous posters slated brownhill previously. but after his goal, his backing by VK, then the critics quieten down. Rightly so, he has been excellent thus far.
Barnes knows the game, and if the team do become stronger as the games go by, he will do his bit.

He might be okay in a 2 with another faster, goal scoring striker but leading the line on his own in this system just doesn’t suit at all.

Looking at the strikers at the club and the calibre of players we are bringing in, Barnes is about as good as it gets unfortunately

Throughout his career he’s never been a 20 goal a season striker, and logically that won’t suddenly change now so I’m not sure why some would expect that to be the case. But his strengths have been relieving pressure for the team and linking up play, but the change in style this season doesn’t play to those strengths as we’re dominating the ball more. I’d like to see him get more involved in games, maybe dropping deeper like Jay does to get on the ball, with others rotating into his position, and see if he can be more effective in that role. He hasn’t had the service yet this season so until we see how he handles chances when they come, it’s difficult to assess his contribution in terms of goals.

"The Flick On"", a totally outdated tactic which will have no purpose as he(Barnes) will have no-one to flick it on to.
We need a central striker to come off the opponents' back 4 and act as a pivot. We don't need a battering ram.

Flick-ons are not necessarily aerial tactics and you see them used in every game in one shape or other. Brentford and Brighton used them to good effect against United . Thing is, Barnes for all his good efforts, can no longer get to the high ones and is too slow for the low flick-ons.
You have hit the nail on the head when you say that we need a strong, fast striker and when we get one I think that you will see many more flick-ons …. but not necessarily in the air.

Good old Barnsey. If he read these comments he'd probably top himself. AT THE MOMENT WE DONT HAVE ANOTHER PLAYER TO REPLACE HIM. So whats the point of banging on about him?

I think Barnes performance will improve now that we have out and out wingers on the pitch. Not sure he will get anywhere near the goals required but his performances should improve

Doubt Jay will start given he's been sidelined for so long, and hasn't enjoyed the full pre-season the others have, useful option from the bench though if needed, which hopefully he won't be.

Not too sure I read into it like that. Though I’d consider going 4-2-2-2 with Jay and Barnes together. Brownhill Benson behind.

And that fact alone shows how short we presently are up front, and why a striker is essential before the window shuts.

Don't score goals you don't win games, and for all the good football we've played, 2 goals in 3 games sums up precisely where our main problem lies.

Apologies thought he'd missed a couple, still can't see him starting tonight though, but even to have him on the bench again is a plus.

As much as I think a new striker is the answer, Barnes is making runs that aren't being picked up for balls through.
Sometimes those runs pull defenders, sometimes with the right pass he would be through on goal. It doesn't seem to be clicking at the moment, and it may never, but IMO it would be unfair to criticise him too harshly.

Said before the match I'd rather Costelloe had been on the bench and found it harsh to leave him out.
Stand by it. Barnes may have 2 more assists than I expected of him, but, good a servant as he was at his best, his best is a very distant memory. Thanks for those memories Ash, but it's really time we look to other players, and for his own sake I think he'd be better served moving on because with how short some of our fans' memories already are with the likes of Mee, Tarkowski, McNeil and Dyche, it'd be a shame to see the same happen again.

So Barnes is going to be the scapegoat today? Let’s just ignore the fact shall we that we are tactically naive and perhaps VK made the wrong calls with his substitutions?

He wasn’t good l agree. However, my point was let’s not just scapegoat Barnes and at the same time ignore the obvious deficiencies in the way our team is set up to play.

I like Barnes but the attempt to win a free kick on the edge of the area was both pathetic and embarrassing.

If we’re banking on him to change the game we’re in trouble

Barnes is an absolute Burnley legend, second highest scorer for us in the PL BUT everything comes to an end. He's playing League One football in a team that is set up completely differently. It's time for a replacement to be brought in.
