Average Age Championship Starting XI

Post by agreenwood » Mon Aug 08, 2022 7:44 am

To demonstrate how much change this squad has gone through, we’re currently fielding the 7th youngest team in the Championship. Average age of the 14 players we’ve used is 25.4. Only Blackpool, Sunderland, Swansea, Stoke, Hull & Blackburn have fielded younger sides. You’d imagine the side will be even younger once the window has closed.

That’s some shift already from last season. I think at one point we were fielding one of the oldest teams in the whole 92 league structure. We fielded the joint oldest in the PL last year (alongside Watford) - 28.5 average.

Interesting. I feel people were overly worried about the tender years and experience of our team. 25 sounds about the perfect age for a modern team. Kompany has protected the McNallys and CJ’s so far and we have started two games with players with plenty of nous.

Is there an outdated view of the Championship? Gone are the Chris Morgan’s and Jon Parkin’s. It’s a league now full of youth and potential in my opinion.

It is a shift but I do think the experienced players are going to be vital this season - that's Taylor, Cork & Barnes right now plus Jay Rod & Westwood when they are fit. Cullen is another who sits above the average, only just though, and I think he's going to be an important player.

I should add I didn’t work this out myself.

You can find just about any data you like at Transfermarkt.co.uk

I’d add Brownhill to that. Captained at this level too.

Kompany has also said how important it was/is to retain an experienced core.

I agree. They are our core that we build around.

I also like how the younger players like Maatsen, THB and the Belgian contingent have plenty of games behind them. Muric in Turkey too. It’s not an inexperienced team and they all seem to have represented their countries at some level. So real quality and potential.

I didn't include Brownhill but only because he's only around the average age.

Only 2 of our starting XI on Saturday were in their 30's, Barnes and cork, and it's unlikely they'll play every game this season, that's an almighty turnaround from only a few months ago, but the squad had to be energised with more youth, equally we've still got a good blend of experience, particularly at Championship level.
