Radio " 5Live " ... Classified Results
I nearly checked that it wasn't April 1st .... Reported in the " Telegraph " today
The long-standing tradition of the classified football results on Radio 5 Live has been axed by BBC in the latest scheduling reshuffle.
Dulcet tones of James Alexander Gordon, and more recently Charlotte Green, have been a key part of Sports Report, one of the longest-running programmes on UK radio, for decades.
However, BBC bosses say there is no longer room for the full results service due to the addition of 5.30pm coverage for the Premier League evening kick-offs. Classified results have been read out after the familiar theme music Out of the Blue at 5pm on Saturdays since 1948. First broadcast on the BBC Light Programme, the show was on Radio 2 for many years before switching to Radio 5 Live in 1994. Gordon read the football scores from 1974 to 2013 (watch video below), when he was replaced by Green, the former BBC Radio 4 newsreader.
Buut fans returning to their cars after games to tune in to Sports Report were surprised on Saturday to discover there were no traditional results read out. Amid a growing backlash, Football Supporters Association chair Malcolm Clarke said it was a "disappointing decision and a sad day for football.""The classified football results on the radio have been one of the great traditions of British football," he said. "I think it is deeply regrettable that the BBC has done this and I hope they will think again."
Mark Lawrenson, the former Liverpool defender who retired as a regular BBC pundit at the end of last season, was among those to express dismay at what he described as an own goal by the corporation. "Can’t believe the BBC have dropped the Reading of the Classified results on Sports Report," he tweeted. "Talk about an OG...!! WTF..."
Axing the tradition is the latest modernising move by Radio 5 Live, which in 2020 presided over a strategic cull which led to Cornelius Lysaght, its voice of racing, to leave along with fellow staffer and host Jonathan Overend. Mark Pougatch – another respected anchor – was also told there was no regular work. A BBC statement said: "With the addition of the 5.30pm live Premier League match to our coverage, Sports Report has been condensed into a shorter programme. We will still offer a comprehensive goal service throughout the day on air and on the BBC Sport website as well as Final Score on BBC One. We would like to thank everyone who has read the classified football results on 5 Live over the years."

Another nail in the BBC coffin.
I don't see how a 5.30 game stops them reading out the results of the 3pm kick offs.
All they do is waffle on for ages before the match anyway.

Re: Radio " 5Live " ... Classified Results
What they don't seem to realise is that the " Classified Results " is one of those " Fabric of the Nation " things, that bind us together.
" It's Five O'Clock and time for Sports Report ", has been heard over the Radio for years, Dads taking their sons to games will have heard it with their Fathers or Grandfathers decades earlier. Most fans of Clubs have other teams they have a soft spot for, axing the " Classified Results " just seems pointless.
The excuse that it's going because there is a 5.30pm Premier League game is frankly ridiculous. It takes around 4 minutes to read the results, which means 4 minutes less discussion on how crap Harry McGuire is going to be, or 4 minutes less of the " joshing and bants " between barely cogent ex-players like Clinton Morrison, who's perennial struggle with the English language we could well do without ...

Up the Clarets, a Burnley fan group, posted that it was "tradition" to tune into the results at 5pm on a Saturday.

Used to love getting on the coach after an away game and god iconic tune was played then the results, almost like winning again or losing again depending on other results.

Ambivalent about the football results being read out, but it’s 606 that needs axing. Never the same since Danny Baker got the shove.

Thought I'd just missed it on Saturday but then was pleased that Chapman read out all of the scores I was actually interested in (ie the English leagues) not long after we got back to the car.

I'm old enough to remember seeing groups of men gathered outside places like TV shops to catch the scores on Teletext, but that got discontinued due to modern tech.

Mid 60s travelling home I’d have my little tranny with an aerial attached to the top of the passenger window. Being 13ish I could memorise every result and then work the tables out in my head. I wish I could do that now!!

Re: Radio " 5Live " ... Classified Results
There's a broader issue I think, in that Sports Report as a whole is desperately important in giving exposure to different sports, and football below the Premier League. The classified football results in themselves give lower league teams a moment of prominence they don't necessarily otherwise get on prime-time national radio, but the broader show strikes me as being (or having been) vital in connecting the stories of those other sports, or lower league football, to the nation at large. Of course, the results - like those stories - are available online, but the difference is that people have to go looking for them. Sports Report and the classified football results deliver them on a plate.
I'd argue that's a more important function for the BBC to perform as a public service broadcaster than delivering yet another top flight commentary. If needs be, put the commentary on Sports Extra for the first 30 minutes to enable Sports Report to run its course.

They are probably trying to make more air time for people who can’t string a sentence together ( like Paul Merson or Clinton Morrison). BBC really is going down the pan as an organisation. Queue the apologists.

Re: Radio " 5Live " ... Classified Results
I used to like the BBC Radio Lancashire Football Phone-in while travelling back home from the Turf, since they stopped doing that show, I've felt out of touch with the other Lancashire clubs... I couldn't name any players for Preston or Blackpool players now, unless there is a clarets connection.
The classified results gave me a bit of education on obscure teams... Elgin City, Blythe Spartans... Matlock Gladiators... I would've never have heard of these teams. Over time, the information used to stick, about what division they were in, how they are performing in the league and so on. I don't actively seek that information anymore... It had to be piped into me while looking at brake lights.
I have a strange relationship with Social Media though. I don't care much for Burnley Podcasts or fan content. I just don't listen to them... the No Nay Never lot, or Vizeh or whoever... its not their fault, I'm just not interested. But if Burnley was being discussed on National Radio, like BBC 5Live or Talk Sport, I'd tune in.

Re: Radio " 5Live " ... Classified Results
All they need to do is skip one of the banal post-match interviews with Bruno Lage or whoever and they free up time for what has been part of the Saturday football ritual for decades.
Unfortunately terms like 'ritual' and 'fabric of the nation' and 'tradition', while perfectly apt, are not going to impress people at the BBC.
Perhaps they could be persuaded if they are told that reading out the results of games from places like Accrington, Hartlepool and Exeter is 'inclusive' 'reflecting the diversity of the country' and 'empowering' for those 'communities'.

The whole ‘you can get the scores via other media/channels’ argument is a little undermined when they talk about not having time because of the 5.30pm match, a match that is kicking off at 5.30pm because it’s available on TV.

The rather one-sided battle between Paul Merson and the English Language has it's funny side ...
On Soccer Saturday, the panelists were discussing flying to away games, and Jeff said " What about you, Mers ? "
" Not a great flier, Jeff , hated it really ... always glad to get my feet back on Terracotta ! "
I'm still waiting for John Parkin's revelation that Clinton Morrison threatened to have him shot during a game to be investigated by the FA and the BBC !

Re: Radio " 5Live " ... Classified Results
Slightly off topic, but please reassure me that on leaving grounds at around 5pm you'd sometimes see random groups of blokes following someone who had a transistor radio to glean just anything about the afternoons' games (whether or not he was going in their direction)? Just like men standing outside television shops watching the results come through on the teleprinter, that was a 'thing' wasn't it?

You can also find out the solution to a whodunnit tv show by looking it up on Wikipedia, but some things just aren't the same.claret2018 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 12:51 pmIf only there were another way of finding out the football scores.

As the late great Terry Wogan once said ...

Nothing more annoying and frustrating than getting a lift to a game and the driver puts music on the radio on the way home instead of the football, it always says to me that this fella isn't a footballing fella

Haven't those people mentioned got it bad enough without inflicting Talksport on them?
