Clattenberg on Bellamy
Clattenberg on Bellamy
Probably comes as no surprise but not his favourite player to ref
CRAIG BELLAMY
"The worst one - and I’ve thought it for years - was Bellamy.
"He was just the most irritating player on the pitch - and he was irritating off it.
"He was downright rude and it didn’t matter what you said to him.
"I made mistakes against him but what he used to say to you, it was not acceptable.
"People say you should have sent him off and I did - incorrectly for diving.

Let's hope he is a more rounded adult, now.

Re: Clattenberg on Bellamy
Mike Dean said the same about Bellamy very recently, being the most difficult player to ref, although he was always charming before the kick off.
Said he didn’t mind really because he new it was Bellamy’s way of motivating himself and was a winner .

Couldn’t agree more with Clattenberg. The bloke was a cock. Think he’s probably changed now though. Hardly left the bench first half and was laughing and joking with the 4th official.

Odd quote. Maybe Bellamy was annoying because he was **** at his job if he admits incorrectly sent people off?

Re: Clattenberg on Bellamy
I think the measure of how hated he was by Burnley fans speaks volumes about how jealous we were. He’d have been worshipped if he had been wearing Claret and Blue.

We hated Joey B and then in a BFC Claret Shirt he became a crowd favourite.

Some folk are completely different individuals on a sporting field - they have to get themselves like that to win
See Nick Kyrgios for example

Didn't we all think this way of him as a player though? I know I did. He irritated me so much.

No one's mentioning a former top referee admitting to sending off a player incorrectly

Jeff Winter said Bellamy was by far the worst player that he had to referee in his career. No surprise really but according to VK Bellamy is an inspirational coach so that will do for me.

Clattenburg & Winter not liking Bellamy certainly shows he struggled to get along with s**t refs

Re: Clattenberg on Bellamy
Bellamy was shall we say “intense” as a player. But he was a very good player and watching him on a recent thing with Tubes from Soccer AM where they play golf and chat together it sounds like he needed to be like this to get the best out of his game…..or that’s what he believed he needed anyway !
Clattenberg is one of those referees who wanted to make himself the centre of attention though - can’t stand the bloke. Mike Dean has that in his character too. They have both been lucky to join the premier league gravy train and all that attention fuelled their already big egos.

Frankly there's no excuse for either behaviour and no reason to tolerate it.

Burnley were a difficult team to referee around 73-75. This was mentioned by semi final ref, Gordon Hill who accused them of being particulay arrogant in attitude.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 12:26 pmSome folk are completely different individuals on a sporting field - they have to get themselves like that to win
Re: Clattenberg on Bellamy
He was a mouthy player.
Mind you, did Clattenburg ever referee Arsenal's whinging tarts (Wilshere, Fabregas etc.). Or Roy Keane?
Re. Bellamy only fair to point out his positive side.
"In 2007, Bellamy was invited to visit Sierra Leone by a friend. The country was still suffering from the effects of a long civil war that ended five years previously. Bellamy was mobbed by fans and was unable to freely walk the streets without an armed police escort as crowds blocked roads trying to see him. He visited the country's diamond mining industry and was shocked at the poor living conditions of the workers, often children. He decided to set up a charity in the country and, on 6 May 2008, plans for The Craig Bellamy Foundation were announced in Sierra Leone.Bellamy spent £1.4m of his own money to build a not-for-profit football academy in the Western Area Rural District village Tombo, where 32 boys received an international standard education and elite-level football coaching at no cost to themselves. The first 15 children were enrolled at the academy in August 2010.
The Craig Bellamy Foundation also operated a nationwide youth league that was founded in conjunction with UNICEF. Operating in the Freetown, Bo, Kenema and Makeni regions, The Craig Bellamy Foundation League provided a national youth football framework for children; as well as on-pitch performance, points were awarded for school attendance, fair play and contributions to community projects. The league also funded the school fees of participating children and employed 175 Sierra Leonian team coaches, regional managers and league coordinators.
Bellamy is also a supporter of Noah's Ark Children's Hospital for Wales, part of the University of Wales Hospital, where both he and his three children were born. In 2010, he became a charity champion for Noah's Ark, a charity that was aiming to raise £7 million to complete a construction project at the site.

During his Celtic days he was reported to have offered a lower league opposition player a bit of extra cash for doing his garden after the match. A right menace. Hate him when hes against you but love him when hes with you.

Re: Clattenberg on Bellamy
Well he had a ghastly manner as a player.
Yet I was the naughtiest boy at school, but eventually became a mentor to young people struggling with their education.
I was told I was pretty good at it. So, I feel confident in what CB might offer as assistant manager.

Nor had I although I'd guess one or two individuals might fit the bill - Leighton James perhaps?
