How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
Let’s face it under Dyche we was stinking in cup competitions, anyone who says other wise is a liar. I still to this day don’t believe he took them seriously, he wanted to stay in the Premierleague and that is it, sooner we was out of the cups the better.
The embarrassing defeat to non league Lincoln & the defeat against Accrington amongst many others.
Anyway how will VK approach them ? Could we have a real crack at them and try get to the latter stages of one ?
It’s not impossible we could get to a league cup final with a good draw along the way and a bit of luck.(Avoiding Man City)

Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
His job was to keep us in the PL first and foremost let's not forget and he did that quite well for a number of years if you're looking to go down that route.
As for the cups, Kompany's job is to get us promoted first and foremost but he may be more willing to take us further in the cups because if we're winning games then momentum helps.

Playing the team and using the subs, readily, seems likely. Team needs game time together, as do the back up players.

Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
You have to utilise the squad, especially in the championship and the number of games to play.
I always thought SD picked good teams for cup matches, just the attitude of those sides left a lot to be desired. Whether that came from the gaffer is another question.
I would hope, whoever VK selects, will be wanting to impress.

Are we not involved in the EFL cup. I can’t see us listed.

Thanks Boss and Jakub.

They're a waste of time, get out of them ASAP, it's no good having a romantic vision about them, they will interfere with our promotion aspirations

Is there any point being in them ?
We won't win them and if we manage to beat a team from a higher division it isn't because we deserved it but it is only because they threw the game (think that is how it works)

Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
Absolutely, we don't have enough players to utilise the squad, we're just adding to to 48 games we will have to playclaretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 1:33 pmIs there any point being in them ?

Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
More seriously than Dyche I hope, we probably won't win one, but even to enjoy an extended run would be welcome for a change.
SD at best treated the cups as an opportunity to give fringe players a run out, and some of our displays in the LC especially were shocking.
And they can be an advantage to a promotion bid as 2009 aptly demonstrated.

I like them as they give us a chance to visit some unusual grounds. Also it’s alway exciting watching every game for me, so the more the better.

How about, the prize money available is the same for both sides regardless of what division they’re from.
If they put a weaker side out. Maybe we wanted it more. A cup run gives our team more minutes on the pitch to gel and improve.
I prefer the more positive view myself.

Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
History shows SD picked some very decent sides in cup games .It’s a total myth that SD “ hated cups” . However as a weak prem team ,defensive, almost bereft of creativity and speed we were usually mugged by “ up for it “ teams that wanted it more . Low rounds in cups are an utter minefield for clubs like us .
The curmudgeons will moan but a cup run can be massive in the champ when you’re facing rubbish every other week .

May have picked good sides but he didn't prepare the teams well, no excuse for a Premier league team to lose to Accrington or non-league Lincoln.

Depends how near the kettle is?
Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
He can’t do much worse. The performances under Dyche against some poor opposition were pathetic. Hopefully he takes the Guardiola approach and fields very strong teams.

Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
As a big Dyche fan there was no interest in the cup competitions.
Anyway trying to convince themselves otherwise is having a laugh.
There is a simple reason for it, there was no money involved. It was the Premier League which paid the big bucks.

Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
That was it for me, he put out some decent sides. But in the league we had to be at 100% to have a chance and everyone knew it. The cup sides we put out were often packed full of players levels above the opposition but just shows if your attitude isn't spot on anyone can beat you. We did it plenty of times as the lower league side.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 12:43 pmI always thought SD picked good teams for cup matches, just the attitude of those sides left a lot to be desired.

Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
That’s not strictly true I won’t argue league wise was prioritised but a lot of time when he give the fringe players or reserve players the chance it wasn’t capitalised upon because ability wise they just wasn’t capable enough to grasp the opportunities afforded. The ability didn’t match the interest & he couldn’t risk injuries due to the importance of the league.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 5:22 pmAs a big Dyche fan there was no interest in the cup competitions.

Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
I know the squad is a bit thin due to some attacking injuries but it's a bit of a shame we didn't have a game this week - would have been a good chance for the likes of Egan-Riley, McNally, Vitinho, Phillips, maybe some of the U23s like Richardson etc to get some time on the pitch.
The league will be the priority for us, as with basically all teams, but I hope we give the cups a good go. Who we get in the draw will probably have a bearing on what sort of team we put out, but there is a balance to be struck between giving fringe lads a game and naming a strong enough side to compete.

Whilst extremely frustrating, there’s too much at stake financially these days to take any action in the cups that could comprise league performance.

Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
With a new team trying to help, I suspect in normal circumstances VK would have gone with strong teams, maybe with a couple of changes to have a look at other options/variations.
Due to the high number of midweek games already because of the idiotic WC schedule, more first teamers will need a rest so there'll be more changes (followed by accusations of not taking cups seriously).

I don’t think it helps having 2 domestic cups. Scrap one and focus on the other.

Re: How will Kompany approach the Cups ?
If either were to go surely it would have to be the LC, most teams still take the FA Cup seriously, and field strong sides accordingly, however many just use the LC to blood younger players, and treat it lukewarmly at best.claret2018 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 10:58 amI don’t think it helps having 2 domestic cups.
