Converting epub to pdf help

Post by distortiondave » Tue Aug 09, 2022 10:16 pm

Evening!

I've got half a dozen or so epub files and I'm yet to find a *free* epub reader that I like.
I pay for adobe premium or pro or whatever its called every year and I know how to use the software, so I'd like to be able to convert my epubs to pdfs.

I've used some free epub to pdf websites, and they worked....they converted the entire epub to pdf, including pictures, but left out all the text. Which is pointless. I don't know if the epubs I've got, which I paid real money for, are encrypted or something which is why they won't convert? I don't like pirating things, but I do like convenience.

Any suggestions from our tech savvy clarets, of which there are at least six.

Have a look at Calibre, Distorian.

I trust you, dush. How can I not, when you've spelt my name so wrong so often on purpose.
But if you steal all of my money and/or tindr swipes then I'll be mad cross.

It started off well, but it's been stuck on 47% for 19 minutes now.

Anyone else able to help?

You are probably having difficulty because you are trying to convert files that enforce DRM. They won't let you convert them because the data is protected for copyright reasons.

It can be the same if stored in the .pdf format too, some files include protection.

I'd look in to just finding some better reader software. If it runs very slow when opening, or when scrolling then you may want to consider a new device to view them on.

Is DRM computer speak for 'can't really be copied?'
If so then i'll cease trying.

Yes. I wouldn't waste any time on it.

Not tried this but this is something I have seen mentioned before as a useful site.

Where you got them from would probably give a clue as to whether they have DRM.
Epubs are just zip files. If you can rename the file from book.epub to book.zip and open it and see and open the various files in there it is unlikely to be protected. Similarly, if you can open it with a range of ebook readers it is unlikely to be protected.

Calibre can also remove DRM. There are various guides like this https://www.techradar.com/news/software ... re-1291960

It could very well be that they are protected/encrypted, in which case
the info provided above is very useful, particularly renaming the file. Try
just sending them to print also - sometimes this is a work-around.

Also, try this link it may be useful. It's also useful for audio, documents, fonts and images.
