Team for Watford?

Post by RVclaret » Wed Aug 10, 2022 8:06 am

Can pretty much guarantee there won’t be any new signings in the starting 11 now, if any even do happen this week.

Does Benson come in after impressing in the second half?

Or do we stick with the same 11 who delivered a controlling away performance last time out?

Watching Watford this week, their midfield two were pretty poor, an area of the pitch I feel we can dominate.

Muric
Roberts
THB
Taylor
Maatsen
Cullen
Cork
Benson
Brownhill
Bastien
Barnes

Bit harsh on Costelloe who I’ve been impressed with but feel Benson is more likely to provide that ‘moment’.

Muric
Roberts THB Taylor Maatsen
Bastien Cullen Cork Benson
Brownhill Jay

A need to be more solid, experienced, and retain the ball a bit better so Cork starts in CM for me
Think it's going to be more horses for courses this season, think we only need Cullen as the pivot when at home and need to break down a side, I'd sacrifice Cork for a more creative / forward thinking CM when breaking down poorer less adventures sides that will sit in at the Turf.

Going to be 30°C (86°F) at kick off.
So I expect a slowed down game at least in the first half.
I'd start Costello and keep Benson and Vitinho on the bench and bring them on as Watford tire.

Seems right to me if Benson has had a good week in training.

Assuming none of our injured players recover, then that looks about right to me, Benson did enough 2nd half against Luton to push for a start.

Costelloe has shown glimpses, but he's lacking end product.

I'd start Costello.
I know Benson is a better option if you picked our best XI, but you have to blood these youngsters if you want them to progress to the next stage. Costello doesn't look out of place at this level, and a few more games will do him and the club a world of good.
We can always bring Benson on for the second half, 5 substitutions could be really helpful to us, if we want to play at the high intensity our system demands.

Sky reporting Florists are after Dennis.
They want a loan with an option to buy, so I don't know what legs it will get, we wouldn't sell him like that.

I’d go 4-3-3

I feel Costelloe has done enough to keep his place
Brownhill to play just in front of Cullen and Cork

Muric
Roberts Harwood-Bellis Taylor Maatsen
Cullen Brownhill Cork
Benson Barnes Costelloe

This but Benson right in more of a 4-2-3-1 but I know the formation seems to change in and out of possession. We really need another option to Barnes though.

I really think we need anyone upfront instead of Barnes. Don’t know who but we need someone that can match the way we play. He looks out of place. I know he puts in the effort in but for me it’s just not enough.

Man United after Sarr after failing to land arnautovic. Hopefully these deals will progress and keep them out of the team on Friday.

Can’t see either the Forest or United interest will keep Sarr/Dennis out of the team for Friday unless it progresses very quickly.

Given the temperature, I would definitely favour the foreign lads more used to playing in this weather. Benson to start for Costelloe.

Barnes caused them problems last time and they historically struggle when we mix it physically so I'd probably stick with him. Couple controversial picks in my lineup but I'd go:
--------------------Muric
Roberts THB/Long (yes really) Taylor Maatsen
------Cullen Cork Brownhill
Benson---------------------------Vitinho
-------------Barnes

Really like Bastiens energy so he's hard to drop but would be a good sub option.
THB isn't convincing me so far but might be the best to deal with Sarrs pace so possibly stick with him.
Costelloe has done okay but I'd rather use him as a bench option probably central striker.
Don't know enough about Telles to start him, Vitinho has impressed me a lot in his brief showings.

-----------------------Muric
--------------THB-----------Taylor
Roberts----Cullen----------Cork-----Maatsen
--------------------Brownhill
--Costelloe---------Barnes-------Benson

BPF, McNally, E-R, Vitinho, Bastien, Tella, Richardson

Jay for Barnes if fit, but that seems unlikely.

Think Long is injured. Either way, I'd be pretty surprised if he played for us again

I think this is about right. The key battleground will be down our left where our great strength (Maatsen's raiding) will be pitted against Watford's great strength - Sarr. You could make a case for playing Vitinho down the left hand side instead of Bastien to provide a bit of extra support to Maatsen, but I assume in practice Roberts will be expected to tuck in, Cork may drop further into the back 4 at times, and Taylor will shuffle across to engage Sarr if Maatsen is upfield.

Benson for Costelloe is hard on Costelloe but feels the right thing to do. Costelloe is going to be a key squad player this season.

Whilst I think Dara has done well, I’d have him as a striker option off the bench. I’d let Barnes (who helped change the game last season at VR) work their back line hard and make it uncomfortable then throw Dara on with 30/20 to go to exploit any gaps tiredness etc. i also think blooding youngsters is about managing them from game to game.

Will be tempting to start Benson given his performance last week but he could be more useful as a bench impact player for now. That said, I'd be interested in seeing Costelloe down the middle in place of Barnes, freeing up the wide spot for either Benson or Vitinho to start.

The pleasing thing for me is we already seem sure of the core of our side. With so many signings I was worried we could be flailing around seeking solutions in the early weeks of the season, but probably 8-9 of the XI are nailed in already.

CT suggested he’d be surprised to see him in the first team squad after the 21s game earlier this week. Not sure why though.
