The Fatwa has never been cancelled and I'm pretty sure the top man in Iran had his Twitter account suspended the other year for banging on about Rushdie and the Fatwa

a terrible indictment of modern society when social media have numerous people celebrating his attack.
The fact that books like his can no longer be written says a lot about how cowed we have become as a society.
Freedom of speech should be to the fore of every decent country. Apathy and fear and legislation is the new order it seems.

Agreed 100%.
There are no clear indications that "the powers that be" will change course and defend free speech (note the recent Hampshire police (several descending on his home) confrontation with a veteran for a jokey tweet involving the LGBTetc flag).
It seems to be a mixture of cowardice and loss of confidence/belief in the "western way of life" that has brought our society much progress over recent centuries.

Whackjobs all over the world. I watched an interview with Michael Palin last year, and he said the Life of Brian wouldn't be made in today's world. Apparently, they got pelters for it at the time, but it didn't escalate into violence or death. Like most decent people, I no truck with religious bigots and nutters, no matter what the faith is they claim to follow. We should have put this behind us centuries ago.

i doubt the boy who attacked salman has ever read the satanic verses.

i doubt he's ever read much beyond religious dogma.

all that fuss over nothing.

The belief systems for most if not all religions are peaceful. It has always been misunderstandings of those beliefs that make people with mental health issues do wrong things

I don't think there has been any misunderstanding here. Nor do I think he necessarily has mental health issues.

This chap was probably trying to carry out the assassination ordered by the leader of Iran. Indeed, he was possibly trying to claim the reward offered by the Ayatollah.

I stand by my statement but you need to understand that those who follow those who misunderstand the religion are going to do the bad things. The person with the knife may well be (in their own mind) perfectly sane, but their belief in what they are told by others is flawed and as a result of the misunderstanding and likely mental illness.

I’d say this is fundamentally a false understanding of religion. You only need to look at the texts. I could go on…
Anyway I’ll get this in before the thread is pulled. There’s a good reason why threads on religion are banned!

It needs sorting in a fair justice system dictated by the citizens in that country without outside interference, people need involving & asking for input & that should apply in every country.

Whether we agree or disagree with peoples decisions people should have a right to make a decision that affects them. People should be able to vote on criminal punishments in terms of sentencing when guilts been established.

Whilst I’m a big fan of promoting your “running man” style game show to replace X Factor you are a perfect example of why the public shouldn’t decide.

As for the guy who committed this crime, absolute coward.

A public vote on sentencing!?

Bordeaux’s Running Man description is a very apt comparison to such a suggestion.

Because there's not an Islamic or sandal wearing mentalist willing to try and stab him to death.

People shouldn’t rush to judge here. After all, the BBC, no less, are reporting that “no motive has yet be confirmed.”

So it could very easily be that Salman owed the poor guy a tenner and was refusing to pay it back. Or something.

In your previous post you said people should have say on decisions that affect them. So presumably you mean the victims and their loved ones having a say on the sentencing?

But here you're saying it should be the entire general public that gets to vote. So which is it?

Also, which cases should the public be voting on? Are we supposed to vote on every criminal case in the country? Because we're all pretty busy, like.

I suspect you haven't really thought this through or you're just posting complete nonsense in order to get a reaction from people.

I've always maintained murder (really serious crimes) & not every criminal case, it shows clearly you haven't read what I've posted previously & it has been thought through, by all means disagree but I'd appreciate it if you didn't make things up to discredit my argument. People deserve a right to a say they don't deserve as British taxpayers funding MOJ when other easy solutions exist.
