Post by jedi_master » Fri Aug 12, 2022 10:05 pm

Time to get him in the team.

Penetrative, shows no fear and terrifies teams. At times it doesn’t work out, but by my count he has beat his man down the byline 4 times out of 6 in his very brief moments across three games so far. He created our best chance tonight and got a man sent off too.

I really like the look of him, and the biggest issue at the minute is the up and down tempo/lack of urgency - I feel he brings that with abundance.

Looks pretty raw but he's got pace (which we desperately need) and he put in a cracking cross at the end.

Already offered more than Roberts in an offensive sense too

I really really like the look of him. 3 cameos and each time he's lifted us. Has that X Factor.
We look aimless and toothless at times - comfortable to have the ball but very little incisiveness or productivity with it. He adds an incisiveness and for me should start over Costelloe- not a knock on the lad he's brave and happy to get involved but he's raw and might be better served as a bench option.

Trouble is there's no one on the end o those crosses. Agreed he should be starting though.

Looks raw, was lucky to get the sending off because he’d overhit his first touch and was never going to get it, but, he has genuine pace and directness and that terrifies the opposition.

Play him instead of Roberts who for all this attacking full back myth and great long throws offers very little

Personally think he's looked clumsy when attacking and a bit of a headless chicken in the attacking role.
So far he's looked the only signing I'd say might not make it.

He's made an impact off the bench playing as a winger very high up the pitch, so people want him to replace Roberts, who is playing as a defensive full-back, often tucking in as a third centre-back? Completely different ask. I'd like to see more of Vitinho and would be tempted to start him but I assume there is a reason we are using him as an attacker, not a defender, at least initially.

Id start him ahead of Costelloe. He needs a start instead of 15 minutes a game.

Which would limit Maatsen, who so far has proven to be the most effective new signing. This assuming that it would be him that would then need to tuck in to make a three.

Roberts has defended pretty well in first 3 games but going forward he has been bang average.
I’d rather play Lowts or Vitinho - if not only to stop these daft “long” throws from Roberts in our current vertically challenged set up !!

You do realise Roberts is playing in a slightly withdrawn role due to the system? He’s doing exactly what’s asked.

The reason Maatsen is flying up and down the wing and not Roberts is tactical. Roberts is shifting into RCB in a back 3 during build up and Maatsen pushes up almost to left wing.

I think it’s harsh to have a go at Roberts for doing what he’s asked within the system… and has been fine so far too. He put in the cross of the match on Friday which unfortunately Jay was offside for and the keeper produced a good save anyway.

Could Vitinho play the RCB withdrawn role? I’m not sure, he doesn’t seem very composed on the ball to me - more raw pace and energy, but has looked a bit clumsy at times too.

I don’t see it that way.

When Maatsen goes forward roberts drops in.

When roberts goes forward, Maatsen drops in.

The only difference I see is roberts is knowhere near as effective going forward

If we play Cullen and Cork holding there’s no need for Robert’s to play as a 3rd centre half.

Give both full backs license to get forward I say.

Attack down the right and Maatsen sits and vice versa. Plus you have at least one of the holding CMs around for protection.

That’s the system at the moment.

I suggest you take a look at the recent article I linked inside this thread:

http://www.uptheclarets.com/messageboar ... s#p1876634

In his Anderlecht system of 4-2-2-2 it was both full backs providing width and Cullen dropping into RCB to form the 3.

Its all in that thread.

For the good of the thread I won’t list your opinions that have been absolutely and catastrophically wrong over the last year or two, but I think it’s fair to say everyone one here knows which ones I’m referring to.

As for Roberts and Maatsen, have a look at the article RVClaret has provided a link to. It’ll inform you on how we play these days.

Given we play with a right winger who really holds the width on that side and a left midfielder who really tucks in, I would suggest it wouldn’t work, no.

If we swapped that around, then maybe it would work. But let’s be absolutely clear, Roberts and Maatsen are not currently alternating who goes forward and who stays back as you wrongly state.

But I am saying they should. That’s why I would start Vitinho on the right as he is more direct

To bring the thread back on topic, this lad has to start, we've been poor in both 1st halves in the Luton and Watford games, and we can't keep giving teams a goal start, we need to impose our play on them especially at home, and Vitinho is someone who might just provide the spark of inspiration we need to unlock defences with his directness.

Needs to play because he's the only decent chant we have at the minute.

Robert’s is not giving us any balance going forward like on the other side and Cullen is not dropping in the middle of the centre halves. Thanks for the link but don’t have time to trawl through every topic on here!

But I am saying they should. That’s why I would start Vitinho on the right as he is more direct
no they shouldn't.
Do you watch the games?

Yep, you can disagree but I am adamant with Vitinho starting we would offer more of a threat
