Patience
Patience
We played well in the second half, created enough chances that one should have gone in and Muric didn’t have a save to make.
Watford 1 shot on target in the entire match!
This is still a very new team, missing it’s best striker that we’ve got (Jay) and most creative attacker (Twine).
It will come… very promising signs, patience required.

I agree, but play the best 11
A couple of players that are clearly way below the standard, however as predicted, they won't be starting in a week or 2... thank goodness

Mixed bag tonight. Deserved a draw in the end. Patience certainly required. But anyone sensible surely knows that.

100%
Barnes and costelloe out, get a striker in with Jay, and we will offer much much more.
Muric creates more opposition chances than anyone in their team, but will get better in our system hopefully.

Re: Patience
Me too. I felt first half, while not doing much, they also didn’t do much, shame we let our concentration slip just before HT as we’d defended well.arise_sir_charge wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 10:09 pmI think we look like we are 2 maybe 3 away from being the absolute dogs ********.

Second half, I can’t remember them having a shot? Whereas we created 3/4 good chances against a decent team who will be up there no doubt.
Re: Patience
I don't think anyone has lost their patience just yet, people are allowed to judge on a game by game basis. It's frustrating though because we are 2 proper players away from being an absolutely unstoppable force at this level, those 2 players wont come though.

Re: Patience
Returning Cork alongside Cullen gave us the platform for the second half performance, that has to be the starting point for any side we select.
I want us to fill the box up a bit more when we are in wide areas as we are unwilling at present to cross the ball often enough.
I'm happy with things as they stand and know that more players will arrive before the end of the window, we are a work in progress but things look decent although there is plenty to improve on.
Everyone, keep your heads. Two home games next week.

We will get this right a good word is patience,I don’t blame barnes at all for tonight the rest behind him did nothing till last half hour. But we do need a striker with a bit of promise going forward.I certainly can’t see how we will finish outside top
6 long term we have a lot of quality in this squad a big thing is first goal, although I hold my hand up I think that’s a good goal they scored there.Sarr was the catalyst is he there 1st September ?? No chance! We will get this right sooner rather than later utc!

Re: Patience
Patience will certainly be shown - but aspects of tonight’s performance (and any performance, for that matter) are allowed to be criticised when warranted.
At the moment you see a team which has almost all the components in its locker, but it’s missing the most important part. Like you say, when they’re in the side we’ll truly know where we stand. If I had to review things after three games, honestly:
Goalkeeper: Unconvinced I am afraid. He has made some decent passes, but some terrible howlers that we have been very lucky to not yet be punished on. This was always likely playing out from the back, but I didn’t expect such an erratic level of distribution from someone we had signed (seemingly) specifically for that task. I cannot yet comment on his actual goalkeeping due to…
Central Defence: I think THB has been excellent so far, big fan of his. Really assured in possession, doesn’t play blind punts but if he needs to smash it he will do so. Looks a very good player. Taylor has generally been fine there too, at times he looks like he wants to default into his LB role by playing too far towards the byline, but in general no issues.
Wing backs: Maatsen has been excellent obviously - didn’t quite get into his full groove tonight, but still performed well in the main. Connor Roberts I just don’t see it, and that remains my opinion a division lower. He’s not quick, he’s not a good defender, he doesn’t win headers, he doesn’t cut crosses out and - frankly - in the last two games he hasn’t offered anything going forward. I’d prefer Lowton, but appreciate I’m in the minority.
CM: Cullen has looked a very good buy and compliments Cork and Brownhill well (who have both been great). Bastien was great at Huddersfield but has had two poor games now and should possibly make way from the starting line up in my opinion.
Wings: Benson looked lively against Luton but was absolutely terrible tonight. He took a heavy hit early on but he needs to expect that at this level - instead he went into a shell and offered nothing. We need far, far more from him. Vitinho I’ve called out separately tonight, think he looks excellent and he should be starting. Tella we cannot comment but offered nothing when he came on.
Strikers: Herein lie the issue we all see sadly. Costelloe is not looking ready for this level of football (or at least, not for a club with the aspirations we have) yet. He has been really good at times in the preceding games, but tonight was a step too far I think. Barnes is trying as hard as he possibly can but is like a fish out of water currently and just isn’t offering a threat.
In conclusion - lots of positives, but there are negatives and it is fair to call them out and be honest about them. We need to see a striker of note come in because there is definitely not going to be enough goals in this squad to offer a promotion challenge. A 15-20 man changes that opinion significantly though - we need a figurehead.

Watford have kept the majority of their premier league side whilst we haven’t. Considering that, I thought we did well. Certainly some positives and we have Twine plus new signings to come in.

I disagree about the goalkeeper though, I think he's incredibly good at the role he's asked to play. You're always going to get a few sloppy passes but in the main, his distribution has been spot on. Every time he's left his penalty area, he's been first to the ball so made the correct call. It's a balance right, you will get far more upside from Muric doing what he does than the odd mistake (even when punished, which he hasn't been yet).
I think the back 4 and Cork and Cullen are locked, very good platform and settled. It's the 4 infront, I'm not convinced Bastien is an attacking midfielder/winger, been quiet in all 3 games. I thought Benson was shite from watching him in Belgium, yet to be convinced otherwise. Tella is just a cheap option loan player, didn't offer anything tonight. Costelloe was very good first half against Luton and totally anonymous tonight. Barnes and Rodriguez just aren't good enough to play the role asked nor will they score many. Brownhill's very good and should be in the side no doubt.
What does that leave us with in the forward 4? Twine and Brownhill in the 2 infront of Cork and Cullen. Then you need to find 2 more... if ALK are serious about promotion, they'll adequately fund and assist Kompany in the most important area of the pitch. We need quality, not cheap foreign punts, serious reinvestment. I trust Kompany 10000%, I see the vision, he's built a solid solid base and a very good side with peanuts, it just needs 1 or 2 star power additions to finish it off.
Re: Patience
I think the opening 45 minutes at Huddersfield have had an adverse effect in terms of expectations. I've got to admit that, as stupid as it sounds, a part of me thought we were gonna walk this league after that. It could take 3 months for things to click and as long as we continue to pick up points and stay in touch, we can still mount a challenge. If we can continue to dominate possession but and become more cutting edge with that, we won't be far away.

Re: Patience
Obviously a work in progress, for most of the game were the best team and way on top all second half, but we do look toothless up front, and we
can all see what we require, a potent striker[which barnes has never been] that would make this into a real good team.
We have lots of young promise, yet still a bit raw but we need to give this team the time to mature.
I lost count of the times Benson turned back feared to take on the full back we need him to get past and get crosses in.but hey lets take it on the chin
and come again we will be a super side once we learn how to score and finish teams off

Re: Patience
Patience is the key word. It wasn’t found in abundance on the match thread though, and we have to hope the lack of it on here and on Insta and twitter don't transfer to the terraces.
We were poor in the first half, but step back and ask were Watford better? The answer is no, but we gifted them a goal from what is, so far, a defense that is still finding itself. In three games we’ve conceded two goals, you could say of our own making, and Muric hasn’t yet actually stopped a shot/attempt - he hasn’t had to.
In the second half we turned up.
This is a project, and it will turn good. So vent on here, those that feel the need, but let’s not take it to Turf Moor

We can make all the difference at home, a win on Tuesday and we'll have seven points from four games with a local derby to come at home on the Saturday.
If we all stick to the plan (we knew it wasn't going to be perfect from game one), I believe we'll be fine.

We’ve got a click and collect squad atm. Played last seasons playoff finalists, playoff semi finalists and a team that came down with us. The real championship starts Tuesday. Trust the process.
Re: Patience
Teasdale out.
Re: Patience
Patience is certainly going to be needed with this new project
We haven't seen a decent striker in the starting eleven for at least a couple of years now and finding one has to be our top priority
Benson is now going to be hit early in every game - he has to get over that and come back with strength of character, or just fade away as he did last night
Maatsen is going to be caught upfield and out of position on many occasions so the opposition just need to play someone wide right. That forces Taylor across as cover and Harwood Bellis is left on his own in the middle of the back line. Last nights goal was a good example and that was when Maatsen was still in our half of the pitch
Plenty of time to iron out teething problems that were always going to be evident in the early games
Just find a decent striker !!!

We showed some neat touches and once we eliminate the need to pass back will progress.
We have better technical players than last season and once our team gell we will dominate this league.Watford are favourites to finish below us in second and they were poor .I think we will get 6 points this week as VK shuffles the pack

You and I are singing from the same hym sheet and Jedi masters post was right on, although I thought a little over critical on the keeper
The likes of Benson, Bastion and the guy from Southampton aren't going to get us promotion we really do need better from the recruitment department.
I said it then and was berated by people on here that the performance at Huddersfield should be taken with a pinch of salt as we were playing an exceptionally poor side.
We are what we are at this present moment a mid table championship outfit at best and I don't see this improving if we don't bring in better quality than we are presently doing

Re: Patience
What’s happening at the club is almost unprecedented. We’ve had a new manager, new coaching staff, new style of play and a starting XI containing 7-8 players who hadn’t kicked a ball for our first team 4 weeks ago.
Despite all of that we’ve dominated possession and conceded very few chances in the first three games. It’s still early days, but part of me feared a shambles before the season kicked off and it’s been anything but.
Clearly we need to be more dangerous in the attacking third, but the signs are good.

Re: Patience
Kompany has been quite clear in several interviews that this team isn't going to just click into gear straight away. It's a brand new team, new manager, new system.
I think a win, draw and defeat in the opening 3 games is about what we could have expected going into this season.
There are some promising signs and there are things to work on and improve. We're also a couple of players short stlll.
Not sure why so many people are panicking. I think we're looking OK at this early stage.

Yes, one shot but what a well created goal and top finish. That's all it took to beat us.clitheroeclaret3 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 10:36 pm3 games and bar the 1st half v luton been much the better team in all the games. Just need a bit more of a cutting edge and especially luck, watford had one shot on target all night
Re: Patience
When we are needing to be clever with our finances, signings such as Benson, Tella and Churlinov (assuming he signs) seem to be quite costly gambles, when you look at someone like Jed Wallace who was available on a ‘free’.
Tella, on first viewing, seems very similar to Benson. It’s early days but im a little concerned that early links to the likes of O’Hare and Wallace (players with championship experience) have shifted to young players with zero experience of the championship.
Im not writing anyone off yet, I just hope that we are being wise with our money and they begin to deliver as the side settles.

Re: Patience
Wouldn't it be great if you could simply pick a new squad off the shelf at the local bargain-basement supermarket and make them jell overnight into a promotion challenging team. I mean, most of our lads barely know each other's names. It's been a good start, and we should have got at least a point last night. Yes, we need time and patience.
To be fair, though, most of our fans know it will take time and that you can't build Rome in a day.

True, but if we acquire Hannibal Mejbri as rumoured we could try and destroy Rome.Billy Balfour wrote: ↑Sat Aug 13, 2022 9:36 amTo be fair, though, most of our fans know it will take time and that you can't build Rome in a day.

Re: Patience
Of course patience will be required, we're attempting a huge overhaul, and have appointed a manager who is still learning his trade particularly in the Championship.
But generally the good outweighs the bad, we're now playing footy on the floor, which many have been demanding for years, we're now signing and blooding young players, which again many have been calling for, but change won't deliver instant success.
Get a potent striker through the door, and get Twine up to speed, and we'll be a different animal with teeth.
We've been competitive in every game so far, and with more clinical finishing, and a touch of luck we could easily be sitting on top of the table now.

Re: Patience
One thing that needs to be addressed - and quickly, is that we need to have some battle hardened players. The way Watford targeted Benson was far too easy at times. Something we'll have to accept.
We'll struggle unless we have more savvy players. Few teams have managed to 'football' their way out of the Championship and we need to mix it up far more than we have done so far.
We can talk about being competitive, but Watford we far more streetwise than us and many others will be unless we find a way to counteract the obvious naivety in the side.

Fulham, Bournemouth and Notts Forest all played passing football last season. Norwich and Brentford the season before. Leeds won the title the season before playing attacking football.Spijed wrote: ↑Sat Aug 13, 2022 11:16 amOne thing that needs to be addressed - and quickly, is that we need to have some battle hardened players. Basically that’s just nonsense and I’ve only gone back a couple of years.

Re: Patience
Not even sure what that means. We weren’t brilliant last night, but Watford were fortunate to get the win. We limited them to a single chance and only the crossbar and strong display from Bachman kept us from scoring. We should also have had penalty.Spijed wrote: ↑Sat Aug 13, 2022 11:16 amOne thing that needs to be addressed - and quickly, is that we need to have some battle hardened players. We didn’t lose last nights game because Watford were savvy or because we were out-muscled. We just weren’t clinical enough in front of goal.

Re: Patience
Exactly this. The intricate short passing and movement was, at times, just superb. You've nailed it. We're the upfront cutting edge away from a really good exciting teamNeil wrote: ↑Fri Aug 12, 2022 10:35 pmI think the opening 45 minutes at Huddersfield have had an adverse effect in terms of expectations.

We need to learn how to be far more pragmatic than we currently are.

Five games in and the resident <insert descriptor> wants us to abandon the new style in favour of pragmatism.
