Muric 5 - a few iffy kicks put us in danger
Roberts 6
THB 5 - see Muric, and caught a few times
Taylor 6
Mattsen 6
Costelloe 4 - he cannot start games at this level, a major weak link
Brownhill 7 mom, made things happen, unlucky not to bag
Cullen 6
Bastien 6
Benson 5 - dog with a balloon after his early kicks
Barnes 4 - can't be starting at this level, appalling footballer, play broke down majority of the time he was involved

Message of the day is start your best team and you'll play better, there's AT LEAST 1 player that shouldn't start a game at this level for us again ( and I'm not saying regards previous contributions or potential )

But my concerns post Huddersfield have been highlighted

Weak and sloppy at the back, and toothless/lacking quality in the box

I hate being right 🤬

I feel like this thread should wait 24 hours to allow some of our more overemotional fan base time to calm down and reflect.

Muric 6 - tried to get things going, few dodgy passes
Roberts 6 - not his worst game
THB 6 - got us moving up the pitch and carrying out of defence
Taylor 5 - slow on the ball, caught out a few times
Maatsen 7 - steady player up and down the left
Costelloe 4 - not a fan, too lightweight, might be better against weaker/tiring teams
Brownhill 7 - if only the rest had his work rate, shoulda scored
Cullen 6 - got stuck in, looked tired without cork
Bastien 6 - found lots of space, did naff all with it
Benson 5 - zero confidence after that first 5 mins
Barnes 4 - a half fit Jay would surely be a better option

Hopefully the defeat is a blessing in that VK won’t risk not starting his strongest team against the better teams in the league, but also highlights our need for a striker.

Need a bit of context. That’s 1 shot on target for the opposition in 2 away games. The defence is fine. We lost our way slightly at the back end of the first half but the main reason is there were a couple of passengers in Benson and Costelloe and no Cork. Tella was equally as anonymous as Benson and Costelloe. Maatsen is a star.

Muric- 5. He is going to cost us points. Thinks he's far better than he is.
Roberts - 7. Didn't offer a ton going forwards but defensively pretty solid.
THB- 6. Out of position at times, doesn't fill me with confidence but didn't scare me either.
Taylor- 7. Hiding to nothing for the goal. Much better CB than I expected.
Maatsen- 5. Defensively suspect for the goal and prior. Didn't offer as much going forwards. Surprising given how good he was the last two games.
Cullen- 5. Lucky boy to not get subbed. Waned as the game went on.
Bastien- 5. Poor first half vastly improved second half, but overall a mixed bag. Looks like he's still not settled in.
Brownhill- 8. Really good player at this level, unlucky not to do better with his late chance.
Benson - 5. Quick and tricky and struggled with any physical situations. Poor end product again.
Costelloe- 5. Anonymous. Good prospect, too raw, should be a sub option.
Barnes -4. Expected him to be handy today given Watford's historical struggles with our physicality but was completely toothless.

Cork- 8 MOM. Best player, stabilised us hugely. Played for England for a reason, joke to start him on the bench with our current squad.
Rodriguez - 6. Did okay. Nothing spectacular.
Tella- 6. As above.
Vitinho -7. In another brief cameo again reinvigorated us. Every time he's come on he's livened us up and looked like he at least wants to make something happen. Should start.

Maatsen 6

Cork 7 made a big difference needs to start

Tella 5
Vitinho 7 needs to start

Awful first half. Lots of possession and no threat at all. Better 2nd half but could have played til midnight and not scored. Watford look a good team to me and we are still gelling but we look far from a promotion side as it stands.

Muric -5 had to pick their one shot out of the net. He will build from the back but that comes with risk

Roberts 5 - one decent ball in at the end but we got a lot from Vitinho in a shorter period of time
Harwood-Bellis 6 - largely untroubled
Taylor 6 - as above
Maatsen 6 - started very brightly but then faded a lot.

Cullen 6 - plenty of possession but didn't really hurt Watford
Bastien 5 - I've got doubts
Brownhill 8 - could have had 2 or 3 and generally our best option

Benson 4 - nowhere near good enough tonight.
Costelloe 4 - the endeavour and work-rate is there but he's not ready for the first team.
Barnes 6 - his best years are behind him but no way does he deserve all the flak his way especially first half.

Cork 7 - we looked much better with him on
Rodriguez 6
Tella 4
Vitinho 7 - a spark and he got us the red card. Takes players on.

Disappointing to not get something out of the game. We were worth a point at least. The issue as I see it, is not the strikers but rather the "service" into them. First half they had absolutely nothing. No crosses. No balls in behind. We could have had Haaland and Mbappe up front and wouldn't have scored. Second half we started to put the ball into dangerous areas (at last) and hey presto their keeper had to work and the bar saved them.

Glass half full but changes have to be made because that starting Xi isn't his strongest and I'm hoping he's working that out fairly quickly.

Muric 5 still to make his first save
Roberts 5
Harewood Bellis 5 ponderous
Taylor 5 not a ch
Maatsen 6
Benson 4 full back terrified him
Cullen 5 faded badly
Brownhill 8 head and shoulders above rest. Unlucky not to score at least one
Bastien 5 weak
Costelloe 4 never in the game
Barnes 5 tried hard but ineffective

Cork 7. No clue why he didn’t start
J Rod 5 no better than Barnes
Tella 4 really poor
Vitinho 7. Has some quality and pace

Players look confused in their roles. Strange team selection. Guess you can’t sell your best players and replace them with inferior quality and expect them to win every game. Early in the season but some ominous signs

The biggest positive from that is probably that we played pretty poorly but we’re still a good match for a team who will almost certainly contend for promotion.

Muric - 6 - blameless for the goal and swept up well at times but whilst he’s clearly calm in possession, overplaying got us into trouble 2 or 3 times.

Roberts - 7 - thought he was a calming presence at times

Maatsen - 7 - remained our biggest threat and created a couple of chances, but caught a couple of times defensively and lacked a bit of composure at times.

Harwood Bellis - 8 - very solid and drove us up the pitch at times, his growth is one of the more pleasing trends at the start of this season.

Taylor - 6 - did fine although I thought he was slightly exposed for the goal.

Cullen - 6 - neat and tidy but after the first 15 minutes he wasn’t able to control the midfield as he would have wanted.

Bastien - 5 - got into some really good positions and drove forwards with promise but that potential was not matched by end product.

Brownhill - 7 - caught ball watching for a second for the goal, but otherwise very good and desperately unlucky not to burgle an equaliser.

Benson - 5 - ineffective for the most part and with rare exceptions he was too easily forced to check back and play safe.

Costelloe - 4 - some good runs that weren’t picked up but lacked a bit of conviction and composure.

Barnes - 5 - the quality into him wasn’t always there but his movement and touch were a notch below the required standard.

Cork - 8 - best player on the pitch in the second half and controlled the central area in a way we didn’t in the first half.

Rodriguez- 7 - vast improvement on Barnes with his touch, awareness and movement but unable to get on the end of anything.

Vitinho - 7 - bit of a curates egg but created a wonderful chance for Brownnhill and forced the red card.

Tella - 5 - not really in the game

Kompany will have learned quite a bit tonight - most of all, Cork is pretty much indispensable to this system, and also that Benson has much to do to adapt to this division. Defensively we looked very solid except when we put ourselves under pressure, but for all our possession, we didn’t create much until we piled on the pressure late on against 10 men, and the lack of quality when we got into the final 3rd was a stark reminder that the rebuild of our attacking function is very much a work in progress. That has in some respects been the story of our season thus far, but Watford are a very good side and will regard themselves as fortunate to have chiselled out a win. That suggests that we aren’t too far away. Now to two home games which give us a real chance to build some momentum.

Muric 7 don't understand the criticism of him, he made 1 mistake and it went unpunished, he's going to make mistakes playing that way, the upside outweighs any potential negative.
Maatsen 7
Taylor 7
THB 7
Roberts 6
Cullen 7 best player in the dull first half.
Bastien 3 Not convinced he's an attacking midfielder/winger, really quiet 3 games so far.
Brownhill 7 very good 2nd half.
Benson 3 awful, so negative, turned back every time he got the ball. Vitinho showed him how its done.
Costelloe 3 his worst game for us, thought he was decent first half against Luton, don't think he touched it tonight.
Barnes 3 lack of any movement, wrong option, more interested in fighting than playing.

Cork 8 MOM has to start with Cullen.
Vitinho 7 direct, positive, something we lacked down the right hand side.
Tella 3 I saw nothing to suggest he's a good player tonight, that open goal miss summed him up (albeit the whistle had been blown).

A step up in quality facing this young side but they did better than I expected. The goals cannot be guaranteed, nor can the win (but we need to improve creativity) but the performance is key. The way we dominated them in large parts was so encouraging. They played well, compared to their West Brom game. But we deserved a point, maybe three.

Particularly impressed by the defence, limiting their attack to scraps. Also Brownhill, not far off half a dozen chances and a real driving force playing further forward, a shame he was poor for their goal.

Any team finishes above us, is up.

Good analysis and i particularly agree about Cork. One area I'd disagree though is with Roberts. I've been expecting him to deliver a lot more this season given we've dropped a leage, particularly in an offensive sense, but I'm yet to see the player who can look impressive for Wales turn it on for Burnley.

Muric - 5 - put us in unnecessary danger
Roberts - 5 some sloppy passing from him.
Taylor - 6
THB - 6 at times needed to move the ball faster
Maatsen - 6 was stifled a lot by Watford
Cullen - 6 not his best tonight - will be better
Bastien - 5 needs to learn the position better
Brownhill - 6 switched off for the goal, better second half
Benson - 4 did nothing after being checked early doors
Costelloe - 5 worked hard, made runs behind and got ignored
Barnes - 4 theatrics only, not good enough.

Cork - 7 should have started, made us better
Vitinho - 6 , caused a few problems
Tella - 5 nothing of note
McNally - 10 best striker in the league
jay - 6 better movement

Muric 5 didn’t have to make a save and distribution wasn’t safe. I’m fine with passing it out but a couple of his passes were suicidal.
Roberts 6 got forward reasonably and did what he had to defensively. Couple of very good crosses.
THB 7 Solid enough and I noticed he is very good at playing passes through the lines. Found Bastien/Brownhill multiple times in good areas.
Taylor 6 Doesn’t look 100% comfortable yet but I think he fits in the Cb position pretty well.
Maatsen 7 always a threat. Looks a very good loan signing. Needs to keep driving at defenders and taking them on.
Bastien 6 great energy and some good touches but faded second half. Shows he can play a deeper role.
Cullen 7 Runs the game for us. Looks excellent so far. Good bite and aggression defensively as well.
Benson 6 Started very lively and looks a real threat but turned a bit safe after he lost the ball a couple of times. Looked like getting absolutely clattered twice early affected him.
Brownhill 7 looks like he’ll be a real goal threat at this level and got involved pretty well.
Costelloe 4 Sorry but he didn’t really do anything today. Noticed he did make some really good runs which were ignored unfortunately though.
Barnes 3 That was crap. Didn’t offer anything of a goal threat and his constant falling over and moaning has absolutely zero positive effect on anything.

Tella 6 Ok, couple of moments but a bit safe.
Jay 6 Made a difference, hope he’s fully fit soon.
Vitinho 7 Lively again. No fear of losing the ball.

I'm not his biggest fan but I thought he was fine tonight . Watford achieved very little down his side despite the fact Benson didn't offer a great deal defensively. In possession, he's not being given quite as much attacking licence as others - he's tucking in to create that back 3 which means he will go unsung. When Cork came in he got a bit more licence and when he did get forward I thought hid promoting was generally as good as anyones.

From tv
Muric 6 still don't know if he is a good keeper, has he had a shot to save?
Roberts 6 lots of effort, not much end product
THB 7 thought he had a good game defensively, and getting the ball forward.
Taylor 7 still not convinced he is a centre back
Maatsen 7 got forward well
Cullen 7 needs to get forward more, too much sideways passing
Brownhill 7 good allround performance but has to take some blame for goal
Bastien 6 good in bits
Benson 5 got wacked 3 times in first 5 minutes, then didn't want to know. You can't do that in the Championship.
Barnes 4 too old, too slow
Costelloe 5 shouldn't start next match

Cork 8 changed our game
Vithinho 7 he's got pace and skill
Jayrod 5 too old and too slow unfortunately

Very frustrating not sure about the keeper, yet to make a save after 3 games. Toothless up front

Agree with this. Not a big Roberts fan but thought he was one of the better players tonight

Muric 6 - a lot being made of the fact he hasn't saved a shot, but the fact is he's only faced two shots on target so far and has been blameless for both. Some of his passing out tonight was poor.

Roberts 6 - good defensively, but again, doesn't use the ball well enough.

Harwood-Bellis 7 - good. More than comfortable at this level.

Taylor 6 - a few moments where he had his full back head on and left too much space behind him.

Maatsen 7 - poor in the first half, but much, much better in the second half. Should have had an assist.

Benson 4 - very poor. Not sure what he offers. Going to need a lot of time to come to terms with Championship football.

Cullen 6 - didn't have as much influence on the game as he should have done. Much better when Cork came on.

Bastien 6 - very poor in the first half, but another who was much better in the second half. Excellent ball to Brownhill for one of his big chances.

Brownhill 7 - our best player again for me, and the only one who looks like he might score a goal for us. Hugely unlucky not to score at least one tonight.

Costelloe 4 - very poor. Rightly hooked at half time. Not on the same wavelength with his technique.

Barnes 4 - very poor. Offside all the time. Ball bouncing off him when he is onside.

Cork 7 - no surprise to see how much better we were when he came on.

Rodriguez 5 - rusty, but better than Barnes.

Tella 4 - very poor.

Vitinho 7 - direct, pacey, and puts defenders on the back foot.

A message to Kompany:
(1) play Jack Cork. Dyche thought he could do without him and we were so much worse. Don't make the same mistake.
(2) start Vitinho on the right side against Hull.
(3) we desperately, desperately need a striker. Barnes and Costelloe don't have the technical ability to play in your side.
(4) tempo tempo tempo. New mantra for the changing room wall.

Muric 7 still to make a real save
Robert 6 still unsure on him
THB 7 looks decent
Taylor 6 ok but we need better at centre half
Matteson 6 struggled to get forward.
Brownhill at fault for the goal did ok second half.
Bastien 5 very average
Banson 4 powder puff
Costelloe 4 as above
Barnes 3 a legend but Christ needs putting out of his misery.

Jay Rod 4 offered little
Tella 4 as above
Cork 6 did ok but we still only created one chance while he was on.
Vithino 6 two subs appearances least he’s beaten a fullback and got a cross in.

Pretty similar to Luton this system is only going to work with decent pacy strikers and
wingers. Fingers crossed for some more signings

Cork needs to be the first name on the team sheet because of how he recycles the ball and helps us up the pitch. This worked perfectly first half at Huddersfield and if we’d have kept the same formation from the off tonight I think we win the game.

Muric 5 nothing to do much, his outplay scares me,he will come unstuck at some point.
Roberts 7 tried all night a real shift.
THB 7 Does the simple stuff, reliable.
Taylor 7 doing well in his new role, been good so far this season.
Mattsen 6 not quite as good tonight lost possession a few times but still looks a good player.
Costelloe 4 out of his depth tonight, has a lot to learn but i,m sure there is good player in there.
Brownhill 8 M.O.M for me, looks to be really enjoying his football, hope he is here to stay, super improvement
Cullen 7 good player, you can see why vince wants him, hope we can keep him fit.
Bastien 5 not showing good enough yet,but we must be patient and see him improve.
Benson 4 really did not do anything but turn back,he is supposed to have real speed and trickery, but seemed scared to take on the full back,
the press in europe did say he was all promise and little or no end product....but early days lets give him time.
Barnes 4 Same old stuff.. just not good enough, and has not been for two years...but at present we do not have a lot else, never looks like scoring.
a striker who doesn,t strike.
Cork 6 won lots of ball and did well after coming on,which is when we started to really push on forward
Rodriques 5 mostly ineffectual we need new forwards thats obvious.
Tella 5 i hope he is better than he showed tonight but have to excuse him after joining only yesterday

We didn,t show any real threat until last 20 minutes, nice football ,good closing down we look a good team, but no real goal threat only
Brownhill looked like he might pinch another, with a goal scorer we will be a real good team,we will get better given time.

Muric 7 I really like him, but he hasn't had much to do. 1 sloppy pass, but sweeped up nicely the rest of the time.
Roberts 6 Not sure that long throw in is ever going to work.
Harwood-Bellis 6
Taylor 6
Maatsen 8 Tidy and always a threat.
Benson 6 Didn't show too much after getting thumped early on.
Cullen 6 Kept us ticking over.
Brownhill 8* Should have scored but not for the want of trying.
Bastien 6 More effective.
Costelloe 5
Barnes 5

Cork 7 We missed him first half. Some great tackles.
Rodriguez 6
Tella 6 Looked energetic.
Vitinho 6 Nice cross for Brownhill.

Good performance and unlucky not to get a draw.

Muric 6 - nothing really to do; 1 scare where he was bailed out, and a tight pass but otherwise untroubled.
Roberts 6 - just a bit underwhelming, feel like he could run more with the ball but I wonder if that's the management.
THB 7 - marshals the back line pretty well and kept them at bay effectively.
Taylor 5 - maybe harsh but I think he's too slow in finding a pass, not helped by maatsen tonight.
Maatsen 5 worst game for us so far, passing weak and poor in final 1/3
Bastien 6 - worked hard and tried to get in the mix but no real penetrative
Cullen 6 - so frustrating, his collection and turning with the ball is great but needs to be more incisive.
BROWNHILL 8* - mom, loads of energy and so unlucky not to be on the score sheet. -1 for not tracking Cleverley
Benson 5 - frightened out of the game after 5 minutes
Costelloe 5 poor judgment in the final 1/3 and seemed scared to lose the ball pressing fires were.
Barnes 6 - outthugged by t h eir defender, got nothing from the ref (how was the blatant body check given as a foul against him I don't know) and showed some lovely touches but movement not good enough tonight.
Cork 8 - made a big difference pushing us up the pitch
Trella 6 - only came yesterday to a technical style so unfair to judge.
Jay 6 - better than Barnes and caused a few problems, be interesting to see how he fits in with the new style
Virginia 7 - great cameo, has to start on Tuesday.

Muric 6 - sometimes he’ll get it right sometimes he won’t. When it goes wrong and it’s the keeper it’s going to hurt you.

Roberts 8 - defensively solid and not bad going forward
THB 8 - played well
Taylor 6 - not sure where he was playing tonight
Maatsen 7 - played ok for a wing back

Cullen 6
Bastien 6
Brownhill 7

Costelloe 5
Barnes 5
Benson 5 - out of position for me. He’sa good player

Cork 7
Rodriguez 7 - better than what we had venue
Tella 5
Vitinho 5
