Barnes 6

Rodriguez 6
Tella 5 plain stupid to play him
Cork 7 did well

Muric 7 didn't have too much to do
Maatsen 8 continues to be one of our main attacking threats. Would be interested to see him playing midfield with Charlie back at left-back. We'd need need to bring someone in to partner THB though
Taylor 7 fairly solid but does not bring the ball out of defence
THB 7 began to bring the ball out of defence but some stray balls
Roberts 6 does not contribute much based on his experience and the way he's talked up on here
Cullen 7 better than vs Luton and the ball needs to be fed to him much more
Bastien 3 poor, too slow, the new James O Conner. Should not start the next game and can only see him as someone to bring off the bench to help shore things up in the future
Brownhill 8 some excellent tackles first half and was in the midst of everything we tried to create. As others have said, our only goal threat. Unlucky with the booking MOM
Benson 4 the tackles early doors affected him. Cannot understand why we didn't switch him to the left wing if it wasn't working out for him on the right
Costello 3 I feel that VK has made an error with Dara. He should have gradually introduced him as a sub in order to build up his confidence. He's not contributed much in the 3 games so far despite what some folk have said. He sruggles to take on his man, seems a bit too cumbersome to be on the wing and built to be as a centre-forward.
Barnes 4 isolated with poor service but we need a couple of new strikers

Cork 7 played well when he came on.
Vitinho 7 we improved, good pace
Tella 3 not the most impressive start; passing backwards when he came on fresh and could take his man on

Muric 5 - admire his willingness to play out from the back but played at least two passes that just weren't there today and put us under pressure unduly. Sometimes it has to go longer.
Roberts 6 - thought he was really solid in the first half but his use of the hall at times in the second was very questionable.
Harwood-Bellis 7 - largely untroubled and looked to get ua going where he could.
Taylor 6 - maybe could have been stronger for their goal but otherwise solid.
Matsen 6 - some really poor distribution last night. A number of understanding passes and another who played passes that just weren't ever there. Really improved in the last 20 minutes or so however and became a real outlet.
Cullen 6 - tidy enough but didn't really stamp his authority on the game despite our possession.
Bastien 6 - surprised to see him start instead of Cork. Actually thought his best spell in the game was when he ayed off the left which surprised me.
Brownhill 7* - much better second half. Unlucky not to score, fantastic energy.
Benson 5 - thought hisovement was poor along with his final ball and clearly rattled by the challenge. It looked a big step up for hum tonight but hopefully he learns.
Costelloe 5 - did some really good work off the ball. Perhaps needs to be a bit more confident with it and more demanding of the ball. I wouldn't have been averse to put him through the centre instead of Barnes at the start of the second half.
Barnes 5 - not his night, but I don't think we can be reliant on him as a starter for a prolonged period of time at this level.

Jay 7 - clever movement and allowed us to play further up the pitch with some nice hold up and link play.
Cork 7 - baffled as to why he was on the bench, can only assume he had a slight knock or was being saved with the upcoming match schedule
Vitimho 7 - exceptionally raw but gave us something.

Not far off and the new lads still need to bed into the team and the championship (though one or two of them I’m not convinced by already). Desperate for Twine to get fit and feature and hopefully we get a striker or 2 in asap.

Muric 6 - No chance with their only shot on target. A few dodgy clearances but also read a few through balls very well.
Roberts 7 - Mostly good. A few wasteful clearances.
Harwood-Bellis 7 - No major errors and a couple of crucial headers attacked and won.
Taylor 6 - No major errors apart from that step on the ball which he still came away with.
Maatsen 7 - Had some excellent moves. A few turns and passes which forced play defensively.
Cullen 6 - Solid. A lot of busy work but without the sparkling moments from the Huddersfield game.
Bastien 5 - Nothing of real note. Great tackle stopped him getting his shot off by HC but his shot in the area was tame when he had a real chance.
Brownhill 7 - A couple of really good moves. Got stuck in up and down the pitch. he could be our most important player this year.
Benson 5 - Not the best game he'll have. Got kicked good and early.
Costelloe 5 - Wasn't working for him but he has a decent future.
Barnes 5 - Would have got us a penalty with VAR after their goal. Struggled against a big defence. One of our few 'big' lads.

Cork 7 - Oozes quality.
Rodriguez 6 - OK.
Tella 5 - V quiet.
Vitinho 7 - Changed the dynamic. Has energy and pace but I'm not sold on him being some super-hero. Lost control of the ball for the red card.

In summary, and I have been consistent with this: we play nice passes without an incisive end product. In this league, you need to be able to rough-house it, too, and I think we will struggle with so many tiny players to score from set-pieces. That is the style we've gone with. We will have great games and poor games but at least we are energetic and giving it a go. I can live with the style for a few years and allow it to develop. Watford are not a rubbish team and will be up there. To lose by a single goal when we could so easily have won (and certainly deserved a draw) is not a justification for the doom merchants to over-react. Be patient, provided we are still pushing to improve.

Those saying Tella was “very poor” and “offers us nothing” should give the lad a break. He’s been with the club for 24 hours and was on the pitch for 10 minutes. What were you expecting??

We started off brilliantly, like v Huddersfield, then lost control and they scored

Muric-6, he needs to kick long at times, and needs to know when to do itcrosses
TBH-7. Looked composed and far better distribution and carrying than Taylor
Taylor 6-for me we have tried him at CB, but you cannot start playing this position at his age. Looks like he lacks confidence, and a bit like Long just passes it side ways or its it long to a poor forward line
Maatsen 7-a class player and last night one of the few ways we were going to be a threat going forwards
Brownhill 8-great second half. The only player looking like scoring which says a lot of our forwards
Cullen 7-looked good but not as effective as other games
Bastian-6.Competed well but blows out second half. Distribution could be better
Benson 5-two tough tackles and that was it for the night
Costelloe-6. Not ready yet for this Division
Barnes 5-poor performance. Sadly this is as good as it gets
Cork 7-got stuck in and wanted the ball
Rodriguez 6-contributes more all round than Barnes.Should start next game
Vitinho 6- looked lively, but dont know his best position
Tella-6 did not see enough of him to guage him

Muric 6 Different to what we are used to watching.
Roberts 6
THB 6
Taylor 6
Maatsen 6
Cullen 6
Bastien 6
Brownhill 7
Costelloe 5 (If nobody passes to him it's hard to look better)
Barnes 5
Benson 4 A real shame given how good he looked last week and the only decent ball came when he used his right foot because he was unable to cut back.

Cork 7 Very composed and a class above.
Jayrod 6
Tella 5 Gave him at least a run out before training with the squad.
Vitinho 6 Looks promising

It's encouraging watching these players and if they gel properly we will see some exciting stuff.

My early concern is the lack of chances created but hopefully it will come together.

A curates egg of a performance that was more like what I expected us to give against Huddersfield given the huge changes in personnel.

Muric 6 - Sooo confident (sometimes over confident) with his feet but we don't know yet if he is a good keeper
Roberts 6 - An ok performance but didn't get forward much but wasn't helped by Benson who makes Cornet look good at tracking back
Harwood-Bellis 7 - Not really threatened and looked confident
Taylor 6 - At times he looked like he might get exposed but recovered
Maatsen 6 - Really didn't get forward as much as we need him to as he shifts defence to attack much more quickly than our midfield does
Benson 5 - A shocking 5 mins from the ref allowed him to be pretty much put out of the game and was never the outlet we needed
Cullen 7 - Such a good player but missed Corky in the 1st half
Brownhill 7 - Our main attacking threat which is itself a bit worrying as he is not a natural finisher but v unlucky to hit the bar
Bastien 6 - I quite like him but not incisive enough
Costelloe 5 - Struggled and time for a break
Barnes 6 - Not at his best and our new style of play doesn't suit him. How many shots at goal has he had in 3 games?

Cork 7 -Why he was left out is a mystery and pretty much our MOM which says a lot
Rodriguez 6 - I love Jay and it was great to have him back and the signs are he will be a much better fit than Ashley
Tella 5 - Felt for him but it ended up being a poor substitution as he added even less than Benson
Vitinho 6 - Got us going down that right hand side

A work in progress yes but a few concerns. We had some last ditch attempts to retain possession when pressed that on another day we could lose and give up a clear run on goal. Given the amount of derbies we have coming up when we very much will not get as much time on the ball as we seem to need this needs to be addressed. We will need to train on quickly to maintain the patience the fans seem to be showing.

This is the player ratings thread for the Watford game, so he’s to be judged on his performance in that game. He was very poor. Doesn’t mean he will be again.

Muric 6 - 3 games in & had nothing to do

Roberts 6 - Solid
Harwood-Bellis 7 - Thought he looked good
Taylor 6 - Solid
Maatsen 7* - The one player who looked to get at the full backs

Benson 4 -worried that he bottled that game having taken a couple of kicks. Got to do more - poor
Cullen 6 - Passing not as crisp or instant as previous games
Brownhill 7 - Excellent second half, unlucky not to score
Bastien 5 - His decision making in possession is laboured at best
Costelloe 4 - a real struggle

Barnes 5 - Getting a lot of stick but isolated first half. Will struggle in this set up

Cork 7 -Different side once he came on
Rodriguez 6 - Much better movement than Barnes and you can see him being a more natural fit
Tella 3 - Was a Dane Richards style debut - awful, truly awful. Can only get better
Vitinho 6 - Gives pace and energy, he's a bit raw but for me he must be very close to the starting 11

I'm not sure he was any worse than anyone else first half, but to score him a 4 when you've given Barnes a 6 doesn't make much sense to me.

Your opinion though.

Barnesey could walk out, curl one out on the centre circle, stand still for 90 mins and he’d still safely pocket a 6 from the Rev.

Muric 5 - I get how he’s integral to our play but too many loose ones last night
Roberts 5 - not having him tbh
Harwood Bellis 7 - played well
Taylor 6 - ok but not his position
Maatsen 5 - they did a good job on him
Cullen 6 - ditto
Bastien 5 - can be ponderous on the ball
Brownhill 6 - good performance but caught out for the goal
Benson 4 - never recovered from the early kicking, went in his shell
Costelloe 4 - rabbit in the headlights
Barnes 4 - he’s nowhere near in this system

Cork 7* - should always be starting if fit
Vitinho 7 - shown enough to start
Jay 6 - absolutely should be starting
Tella 5 - underwhelming but thrown in

It’s obvious where the issue is. We’re not far off.

Muric 6 not a save in 3 games . Great feet though risky
Roberts 4 pretty loose and misplaced passes
Harwood-Bellis 6 steady
Taylor 5 not at his best but not a lot to do
Maatsen 7 our best player by some way
Cullen 6 always lively looking fir the pass
Bastien 5 talented but not so decisive last night
Brownhill 7- commanding at champ
Level
Benson 5 lively but little end product looks like a low league winger
Costelloe 4 his time will come but not yet , wasteful
Barnes 4- just why ?

Cork 7 decent at this level ticked if over
Rodriguez 6 gave us movement and an outlet
Tella 5 bit tentative

After seeing the ratings today I am giving up even looking at this thread anymore. The same old tropes of the same players, blaming and victimising them by posters who display their prejudices and agenda's on players no matter how they perform. Some of the ratings and comments on here are truly mind numbing and seemingly posted by posters who it would suggest spend most of the evening influenced by drink and not by actually watching the game.

When you see a player getting pelters who has been with us for almost literally 10 minutes it really does make you wonder.

From TV.

Muric 7 - Not to blame for the goal which was an excellent finish. Seems alert to over the top balls which he dealt with well.
Roberts 6 - Defended well but not much going forward in the first half but more attacking in the second.
Harwood-Bellis 8 - Looks really solid and steady although as he must be one of the main threats from free kicks/corners doesn’t seem to win that much in the opponents area.
Taylor 7 - Fouled just before their goal. Looks good in this role.
Maatsen 6 - defensively OK but disappointing in attack.
Benson 4 - was attacked by Kamara twice early on and that was the end of him. This was obvious for all to see and VK should have done something about it earlier then he did.
Cullen 6 - tenacious but not the force as in earlier games. Lucky not to get a yellow card.
Brownhill 8 MoM - working hard is a given for him but he was also our main goal threat and bit unlucky not to score.
Bastien 5 - I’ve yet to see what he offers. He seems a bit lightweight for the midfield role.
Costelloe 4 - although not ‘hit’ like Benson was, he was equally ineffective and rightly hooked. Thought VK could have swapped him and Benson at some point just to see what would happen.
Barnes 4 - all he seemed to do was feud with Sierralta and lost. Ref let a lot go here.

Subs:
Cork 8 - changed the game in our favour. Why was he on the bench? He looks essential to the way we now play.
Rodriguez 6 - brought the forward line to life without being a threat himself.
Tella 5 - didn’t notice him at all.

(Vitinho - only on fifteen minutes but nearly won us the game with his crosses and the red card incident. Like to see him replace Benson or Costello next time.)

Overall Watford looked a more complete team who knew what to do and just did enough to win. They were physical but in many ways we held our own. They weren’t much of a threat but the goal that won it was really well set up and taken. We don’t seem to have that in our team yet, at least not on this day.

As we all know this is early days and a close defeat against a team most think will be up there is no disgrace so there is a lot to be optimistic about.

I think you more or less saw the game as I did

I can live with the style for a few years and allow it to develop
While I agree with your assessment of individual players on the night , I can't agree with your assertion that we can live with this style for so long. Kompany gets his chance this season and if it looks like he's working he gets more time for me.
It remains exciting while we see what he is trying to do and have given him a proper chance to prove he has been good enough to buy the right players

Muric 6. One bad pass, no saves to make.
Roberts 7 Promising, defended well in the 1st half
Harwood-Bellis 7 Great signing, loves to ping a pass
Taylor 7 Solid and no cause for concern playing centre half
Maatsen 7 More wasteful last night, but still our best attacking threat
Benson 6 Early days, will take some kicks this season, should be a good addition
Cullen 7 Our nucleus. Some great blocks and forward passing
Brownhill 5 At fault for the Luton goal last week, and cost us again last night not following Cleverley. Poor finishing should have scored at least 1.
Bastien 7 This lad can play, should be a vital cog in the works for us.
Costelloe 6 Early days. He didn't see a lot of the ball last night , but he's definitely good enough
Barnes 5 I think he's trying too hard, the ball is bouncing off him at the moment

Cork 7 Has to start
Rodriguez 7 Need him to stay fit
Tella 6
Vitinho 7 could start the next game.

I agree. I’ve only watched 35 mins so far and we are pretty much in control. Apparently we get better too. Why the melodrama?

I should wait until I finish the whole thing I know but I’m a bit baffled…

Two strong tackles and Benson loses all his attacking confidence? What’s going on?

He’s a pretty decent, aggressive, right back Kamara. Ivory Coast international linked to top clubs last year I think.

Give Benson a fair go…
