9 men
Can't keep starting games with 9 men, that's how it feels we Barnes and Costelloe.
Costelloe will improve and be a very very big player for us but he needs to start on the bench for a while

Re: 9 men
I just don’t get it with Costello, someone else mentioned it on another thread we just don’t want to seem to pass to him.
Watched him closely vs Luton and made some good runs, found space but just didn’t receive the ball. Was no surprise to see him subbed at HT tonight based off watching on TV.

Benson was awful. 2 fouls early on and he couldn’t hack it the rest of the game pretty much.

Re: 9 men
Watford clearly studied the last game and identified that we would use Benson as our main source of creativity. They double-marked him from the word go and put in some gritty challenges when he had the ball. Robert’s failed to help him out and as a consequence the right side of our attack was static until Vitinho and Tella came on.

Re: 9 men
I love seeing youngsters come through but it is time to pull Costelloe before it causes him more harm than good being there. He looks scared and whilst there may be a good player there I don't think we will see it unless he gets some luck ASAP. Had that chance gone in V udders then maybe this conversation may be different but then I recall saying the same about Juke v Swansea for months afterwards.

Re: 9 men
Watford did a job on Benson and the ref did nowt about it. The ref was appalling by the way. They targeted him and filled him in. Smashed his confidence. He will be a top player.
Barnes and Costelloe both need a break. Great to see Dara getting a chance and whilst he has impressed, seems too much too soon. He will be a top player.
Barnes.... I love him to bits, but he offers very little now. I would bring him on in the last 15-20 to do what Ash Barnes does.

Re: 9 men
Yep, Benson targeted by a fourth division manager and kicked out of the game. Very poor refereeing who seemed.pleased that he was on telly. Reminded me.of Gudmunsson being targeted by Lincoln City. It's a tough gig being a referee but it's more than concerning to see the lack of quality and general common sense that there is in this league. After he let their full back off with two assaults he daren't show any cards until the blatant red card gave him license to start dishing them out. But we all know why there is such a shortage of quality with the whistle so we shouldn't really be surprised.

Breaking: Burnley FC appoint Bumba director of football, along with several of his “friends” to oversea decisions made by VK for the rest of the season. Alan Pace says “the vast footballing knowledge of several members of Up The Clarets is just what we need to be successful. Why would we waste that opportunity”? KRBFC will be their assistant, along with Newcastle Claret.

Re: 9 men
The ref was dire both challenges on Benny were bookings and yes he did have a poor game after that .However our ponderous play out from the back nonsense with back passes and sideways passing didn't help develop momentum
Watford are a poor side who offered very little but managed to nick a win.Two points lost but we have class players who will gell

I thought Barnes made more contribution to the game than Costello, Benson and Bastion who were anonymous.
Barnes was isolated as he was starved of any quality service. Benson was dreadful and needs to toughen up, he **** out after an early tackle

Re: 9 men
The first half felt to me like when you played and you know the opponent is better than you. Anybody on the ball just turned and knocked it back like it was a hot potato.
Second half Jack Cork brought far more control to proceedings and we were much better.
Good to see Josh Brownhill show he can play the 10 role.

Re: 9 men
Costello - agree with others it’s a game too far. Imo we’ve looked more threatening in both our last two games when he’s come off. He’ll be a good player for us but he’s too safe and doesn’t create. One to bring on when we’re in winning positionsTop Claret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 13, 2022 8:36 amI thought Barnes made more contribution to the game than Costello, Benson and Bastion who were anonymous.

Barnes - has worked really hard in all three games I thought. Gives everything for the cause. He’s not had any service, but that’s exactly the problem: we need a striker who will fashion chances himself and that’s not gonna happen. Again, one to be bringing on.

In many ways it’s probably for the best that we no longer have a Cat 1 Academy.
There is zero patience for young players amongst some of our fanbase.

V.K said two weeks ago, that the games played before window shutdown would highlight where we needed to recruit. He learned a lot last night from certain players. The need for two strikers last night could not have been clearer. Also the need to play with two orthodox centre halvesi

Barnes never got a decision all night from that awful referee. There were fouls every time they came together but he clearly didn't like Ashs’ style and gave against him consistently.

Re: 9 men
Harsh on Costelloe
Barnes has gone though
Think we have missed a trick not giving Vydra a contract though a proven goalscorer in the Championship...and there isn't many more options for that position available, time will tell I suppose.

Re: 9 men
Costello might not have had a great game, but who did first half. It should be the senior pros lifting those around them, not a 19yr old lifting them.
He'll have more games like tonight, but he's learning, and getting the feel of the game, all the time. He's worthy of a place, and is just going to get better and better.
Why anyone feels the need to start a thread to have a dig at him is mind-boggling.

Not sure it's harsh on Costelloe, he was non existent Friday but I've said he'll be a big player for us. He's clearly got something about him but he needs easing in

Re: 9 men
Thing is if you’ve got players that the other team have identified as enough of a threat to decide to try and kick them out of the game, and you can get away with it in this league to some extent, then move that player around dragging the marker around or changing the marker but also consider putting that player in and around the penalty area to win free kicks and pens

Re: 9 men
Ok,speaking of easing in....Barnes wants easing out if we are going down the "non existent" route of describing our players contributions to games,Costelloe is a young kid cut him some slack
Re: 9 men
Barnes just wants dropping no easing out.
Don't see how I've been harsh on Costelloe, I've said he'll be a big player but needs easing in that's how young kids are brought on.
Is that really your issue?
