Nick Pope
Re: Nick Pope
Hated watching him play for another team, just felt wrong. He really is England's number one.

Both Pope and Mee had a good day.
Tarkowski and McNeil very much less so.
Let's see if Cornet features at all for West Ham tomorrow.

I doubt we’ll see a better keeper play for us in our lifetimes. The amount of worldie performances he pulled out of the bag for us.

I can only thing that the cash flow situation was so critical (eg not being able to pay the wages) that the board just accepted any offer

He has a new roadmap to follow and so do we, hopefully both will end up in success.

Re: Nick Pope
Not knowing the details of his Contract with us and without a queue of Clubs clamouring for his signature, you may well be correct.
Re: Nick Pope
I don’t agree with this at all.
It’s a criminally low amount for a ‘keeper of his ability. He could quite feasibly play at the top level for the next 5 years and I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if his appearances for Newcastle surpass those for us.

In my view the disappointing aspect of our transfer dealings. I doubt we’ll get £15m for him and I think there was a contract option for a further year. Struggle to see how it could be described as fantastic business.

That probably depends on how Newcastle progress and their style of play. If they get into Europe and want to evolve into a side that relies heavily on passing out from the back then he will always struggle in that respect.BurnleyFC wrote: ↑Sun Aug 14, 2022 9:25 amI don’t agree with this at all.

His days would then be numbered.
Re: Nick Pope
Why would all these sides suddenly want to evolve into playing out from the back and how many goalkeepers are actually capable of playing this way?
It didn’t work that well for De Gea and Man United yesterday and Pope is as good a shot stopper (if not better) than De Gea.

True. I think what I meant was it’s nice to see them in a team with serious potential (Newcastle) and an exciting team (Brentford).
I’m disappointed tarks and mcneil went to Everton. Garbage club who I think are doomed this season.

The record fee for an over 30 year old keeper is 16m, Rui Patricio, who has been Portugal’s number 1 for a decade and won the Euros, now playing for Roma.
I don’t think the fee is as bad as made out. Added to the fact we clearly needed some cash incoming to fund our immediate and needed rebuild.
If we hadn’t signed all those players early maybe we wouldn’t have started as promisingly as we have.
Whether or not that year was extendable in the clubs favour who knows, it wasn’t with Cork who was free to leave.

Up to 15million (where have you got that from)for a top international goalkeeper who could play till he's 40? It was a giveaway. A dreadful piece of business.

Re: Nick Pope
Newcastle local reporters suggested at the time the fee could reach that inc bonus’.
Who knows if he could still play to 40, Joe Hart was a top keeper and won the PL, yet went downhill massively post 30. De Gea is also looking worse and worse as the years pass.
Re: Nick Pope
Not sure. I thought the automatic option to extend by a year was void upon relegation. However, it doesn't matter because the club agreed to give him a new two-year contract.
Re: Nick Pope
The fee was widely reported to be £10m-£12m. Reference to £15m feels like cherry picking to support a narrative that it was fantastic business for our club, which it wasn't.RVclaret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 14, 2022 10:40 amNewcastle local reporters suggested at the time the fee could reach that inc bonus’.

I wonder how long Nick Pope will remain 3rd choice? Jordan Pickford playing for a team at the bottom of the Premier League. Aaron Ramsdale had mistakes in him yesterday even though Arsenal won.
Re: Nick Pope
If Pope can significantly improve his passing / kicking in the next 2 months then maybe but I don’t foresee that. Otherwise it’s relying on the other two being absolutely terrible for their clubs.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Sun Aug 14, 2022 10:52 amI wonder how long Nick Pope will remain 3rd choice? It's crazy I know, but the rest of the Prems loss, is Newcastle's gain. It doesn't make the sale any sweeter, but we needed a bidding war for Nick, and it didn't happen. The distance between Nick and De Gea is light years, they could have had him cheap for 11-12 mill. Having said that I would feel for Nick, or Tom if he's given the chance, to play behind that shower of shoite, Uniteds defence.

Fantastic business? He’s probably one of the top ten goalkeepers in the country. It may have been a deal that suited all three parties in one way or another, but if it was fantastic business for anyone it certainly wasn’t BFC.

Re: Nick Pope
We have paid £2.5m (??) for a keeper with hardly any decent form or experience in this country.
We sold arguably the best keeper in the clubs history and one of the best and consistent keepers in the best league in the world for £10m.
Net difference £7.5m…..less whatever our loan / invoice discounting costs are.
How anybody can argue that this was a “fantastic business” for Burnley I have not got a clue.
I don’t care if there were not any other bids or interest (not even sure that is correct)…..refuse the offer from Newcastle and wait for other clubs to start showing an interest. There was 6 or 7 weeks of the transfer window left so what was the need to panic ?
I don’t for one minute think Nick Pope is the type of person to bang down the managers door demanding a move or that he’d refuse to play….but even if he was you do not cave into the demands of any players and you always put the clubs interest first - especially when you are in the financial state we are in.
£25m to £30m is the minimum we should have got. His age and statistics about keepers over 30 and how much they have been sold for are irrelevant - the only statistics that matter are his keeping statistics in the last 3 years which are up there with the best in a league that has the best keepers in the world

£25m to £30m is less than Pickford and Ramsdale were sold for and Pope’s stats have been consistently better than both.
Newcastle paid £25m for Wood…..so it’s not like they did not have a history of paying crazy prices. Wood was having a shocking season and his age as a striker is a lot more relevant than Pope being 30.
But yeh…..£10m……”fantastic business”

Keeper tells club he wants to play in the prem
Every prem club knows he is available
Only Newcastle bid
We should have waited nearer the end of the season we would have got 25m plus once clubs started making offers
Newcastle have a well publicised bid accepted and no other club even matched it
Yet had we waited clubs would have coming rushing for 2.5 or 3 times the bid we accepted

Both were in their early 20s (paying for potential as well) and both have more desirable attributes for a modern keeper at top clubs. Again, no disrespect to Pope who was outstanding for us and I loved watching.
Comparing to Wood also isn’t really relevant, that was a mid season gamble by Newcastle to also put us (relegation rival) in a bit of a hole. And Wood is a proven Prem scorer, there is a premium for them compared to keepers.
The fact is no other Prem team in the league wanted Pope enough to bid, Newcastle held all the cards in the deal (like I said at the time but was shot down) and we got one of the highest fees ever for an over 30 goalkeeper.
If we had refused Newcastle’s bid, we were risking him not being sold, which wouldn’t have suited both Pope or us. (See Pope’s interview with the Athletic where he made it clear he needed to stay in the PL to be in with a World Cup shout).
Re: Nick Pope
I think you said before Pope was sold the club should take anything over £20m. If so, why would you now regard half that a fantastic deal for the club?RVclaret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 14, 2022 12:05 pmComparing to Pickford and Ramsdale isn’t really relevant.

Re: Nick Pope
Only seen the MOTD highlights but Pope was outstanding. Good to see Ben score too.
Re: Nick Pope
Well I was hoping there would be more interest in Pope and it was perhaps before realising Cork’s auto year extension was void on relegation (leading me to think Pope’s might have been). Turns out pretty much every PL club didn’t need a keeper, or if they did, they went for a cheaper option (Forest loaning Henderson for example).
All things considered, I think a fee of between 10-15m given the circumstances is good business. Perhaps I was over-zealous using the word fantastic, but it was after seeing a few comments suggesting it was disgusting business / criminal from others.

Re: Nick Pope
For the sake of £7m net we would have been better keeping him and letting him walk away for nothing next year.
We did not have to sell him - he was under contract and he would have played for us.
You say comparisons are not relevant but you then bring out statistics about keepers over 30 and what they have been sold for which is completely irrelevant.
And of course there is relevance in what Wood was sold for - no other clubs were interested in him. If we would have got a derisory offer for him like we accepted for Pope we would not have sold Wood.
If you seriously think Pope was only worth a net £7m to Burnley this season then you are mad

There was a third option - wait to see how the position changed in the remaining weeks of the window. Who could have foreseen Henderson burning his bridges at Man U, De Gea chucking one in? Not suggesting that Pope would have ended up at Man U but stranger things have happened and other situations may have developed.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 14, 2022 12:18 pmI suppose the alternative was to let him run down his contract and leave for nothing

Newcastle's offer was so low that we should have been able to reject it and hold out for more. The fact that we didn't, even worse if we couldn't, is rightly imo attracting a proportionate amount of criticism.

Small price to pay for having one of the best keepers in the country in our nets all season. Especially when we knew there was a good chance we would be selling other players and bringing in £50m plus.
