Jerry Sadowitz

Post by 4midable » Mon Aug 15, 2022 10:49 am

Thoughts?

Not much of him about online if you wanted to watch any of his old shows, but there are a few scattered around if you know where to look. Ruthless at times

His show was cancelled at the Edinburgh Fringe due to complaints

Very woke indeed. If you dont like it dont go..

Not sure “woke” is the right word here (JS is a pretty “woke” comedian, and person, he’s just very offensive with it).

“Cancel culture” may fit the bill with this one. Whilst he’s not entitled to a venue for his gigs, it’s very poor form to cancel them at such short notice, imo.

I’ve seen him a few times and he can be a bit hit and miss but you don’t go expecting a bit of light banter and giggles. If at least one person doesn’t walk out feeling offended then he’s not on form.

As for the venue, they knew what they were getting!

I don't think your woke if you're complaining about a bloke getting his cock out on stage.

Apparently he did a gig in canada ... walked out on stage and his opening words were "Hello Moose F@#kers" ... someone got on stage and knocked him unconscious. Just before the punch, he told the audience: “I’ll tell you why I hate Canada – half of you speak French and the other half let them!”

Suppose it depends what happened. Heard he exposed himself - that could be been just a brief flash or it could have been much more aggressive and personal. All I know is JS has played Edinburgh for years and has always been one of the most offensive comedians on the circuit, so it sounds like something additional happened beyond his usual act.

I used to like the Pall Bearers Revue and The People vs Jerry Sadowitz….neither have been repeated unsurprisingly.
I once posted a clip from the Revue onto you tube and I got a threatening email from “his people” to remove it or they will prosecute me

Not sure why woketards would want to see one of the most offensive comedians ever.

Sadowitz, known for his provocative stand-up shows, performed in front of 600 people at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on Friday.

The Pleasance said a "large number" of people walked out of the show as they "felt uncomfortable and unsafe to remain in the venue".

The comedy show operator - which claimed it did not censor its comedians' material when explaining why it cancelled Saturday's performance - said Sadowitz's act was "extreme in its racism, sexism, homophobia and misogyny".

He's been around for a long time, I've never seen him, but I know he's a 'comedians comedian'. I suspect the reports saying he uses racist language are not printing it with the appropriate context - as is often the case when comedian performs something controversial. As for getting his knob out, thats been part of his act for years apparantly - and it supposedly works within the situation of the act. He's not a mainstream comedian by any means, and Ive never seen him on television, other than a couple of clips I dug up from the 1990's on Youtube.

Apparently the venue cancelled his show after numerous complaints... seriously, who's going to comedy shows and complaining about the act?!

In ten years though, I worry that comedy is going to be made up of very safe, stale comedians where a joke can only be performed if it works on paper and doesn't potentially hurt the feelings of anyone. So If you like Michael McIntyre, you'll be ok.

He is also a very very good magician which forms part of his act

The guy has spent his career trying to provoke a reaction. Now he's provoked a reaction but it's one he doesn't like, so he's whining about it. What a snowflake

The reaction he’s spent his career trying to provoke is called laughter. That’s his job, and he’s pretty good at it.

Why invite him in the first place. I’ve always thought comedians that have to shout and swear aren’t that funny ( eg Billy Connolly). Even less so if they have to resort to extreme vulgarity and there shouldn’t be a place anywhere for blatant racism in this day and age.

I'm sure he is but when you're doing stuff like pulling your c*ck out on stage, then you have to take the rough with the smooth when it comes to venues.

Everyone knows what they were getting with Sadowitz. My mum and dad went to see him at the Mechanics in the 80s. It's not like he's some new iconoclast on the block.

He’s been doing that sort of stuff for more than 20 years. If the venue didn’t know what they were getting when they booked him, they haven’t done their job properly.

How do you know its blatant racism though, you have to understand the context of what he is delivering.

Louis CK does a whole routine about the 'N word' and says it numerous times through out the bit, and it's brilliant. If you see it in print though, it routine looks like a racist, homophobic tirade - when it's not.

He’s actually a rather good magician too. To think that people went to see JS and complained about being offended is irony in its purest form . Yes it’s a bit Wokey/snowflake ( perhaps the trendy millennials had no idea how he plays out ?) . Though ultimately this is cancel culture in its purest form, and quite disturbing. Reminded me of Matt Lucas’s ( a gay liberal jew) autobiog where even 10-15 yrs ago they’d started having long lists of subject matter/words etc that you couldn’t touch , once banned from one club you became an overnight pariah.

Someone on this thread has suggested that Billy Connolly isn’t funny.

I know these things are about personal opinion but they must be the first person I’ve ever heard express that view.

Each to their own, but I find him hilarious, and he really engages you in his monologues.

Underrated actor too to boot.

And he also went commando, only he did it in the arctic for one of telly docs.

If you don’t like Billy Connolly, you’ll need to get your complaint into Ofcom pretty soonish. They’ll many a television tributes planned in the not so distant future… You need to feel safe in your own home without various clips of him not being funny in your living room.

That seems to be the way to deal with things these days.

Context is everything with this. He tells one about the SS and Jews which is quite brilliant but you could easily make an easy headline about and get him ‘cancelled’ for it.

It’s a worry if we only end up with ‘safe’ comedy.

The awesome League of Gentlemen wouldn't be made today with the same characters.

Papa Lazarou (Netflix has already taken it off their network due to blackface, and the BBC was going to do the same until the backlash). Barbara (taxi driver). Angry Geoff (his jokes etc).

Re the Papa Lazarou character. I never for one moment viewed this well-written character as 'blackface'. You have to be warped in the head to think that Papa Lazarou is a caricature of a black person.

Speaking of Angry Geoff, there’s a great gag in series three of League of Gentlemen when Mike goes round to Geoffs flat, the estate is riddled with smashed bottles, sounds of gun fire, barking dogs and kids playing hopscotch on the forensic chalk outline of a dead body.

Mike is there to inform that he’s chosen for redundancy, when he knocks on the door, Geoff is sketchy about answering, and you think it’s because he’s weary of bailiffs or living in such rough estate.

When Mike enters, Geoff asks him “Does it stink in here? It’s them bins. I’m too scared to take them out.”

Mike sits down and after a bit off chatter, he asks him if he’s heard the news about the redundancies, but before he finishes his sentence Geoff interjects thinking it’s the office gossip about their colleague Brian getting bummed.

When Mike asks by who, Geoff replies “Some binmen”

It’s sums up his character perfectly with his prejudices, insecurities in a joke that you don’t appreciate first time round, it just seems like an absurd quip at first, but there’s an unseen backstory to his reaction to the rumour which is shown in the environment in the scene. So when you see the context around the punchline it’s a really well written joke.
