Has Dele Alli fallen out of love with football?

Post by GodIsADeeJay81 » Wed Aug 17, 2022 10:14 am

Bound for Besiktas Dele Alli has seen his career spectacularly decline https://mol.im/a/11117681 via https://dailym.ai/android

Appears that he's off to Besiktas.

I think Everton have to cough up a large chunk of money when he reaches 20 appearances for them under the terms of his transfer from Spurs, but he's clearly not showing enough for Everton to warrant keeping him.

Just seems to be on a steady, downward spiral at just 26yrs old and I can't see him pulling up any trees in Turkey.
If it doesn't work out there, I can't see it being long before he maybe does a Darren Bentley and retires at a young age due to a lack of passion for the game.

It certainly looks that way. He wouldn’t be the first it’s happened to.

A poor-to-average player that had a decent season or two as a youngster and for some reason got held up as a fantastic talent.

There’s something not right. He’s got all the talent.

I can only think it’s something mental as opposed to physical. Aside from a few hamstring injuries, there doesn’t look to be too much in his injury record that suggests he’s no longer fit enough.

It’s a shame because he really was a cracking player.

I wonder if he has a little cry when he sees each player reveal video.

He was a decent player, as mentioned he probably had too much too young and perhaps mentally he’s not really up for the challenge anymore.
It’s a shame

He definitely had ability and was much more than an average player.
He won PFA Young Player of the year two times running and had a couple of excellent Prem seasons with Spurs (2015/16 and 16/17) where he scored 28 league goals in 70 appearances (from midfield) & Spuds finished 3rd and 2nd in the league.

He was still only 21/22 in that last good season at Spurs and should've been still improving over the next 5/6 years. Unfortunately his career has fizzled out to a large degree.

It's easy to think it's something in his make up that's stopped him striving (to even keep the same level let alone improve).

He had a very disrupted childhood - his Nigerian father left his English mother (who had alcohol problems) a week after his birth, few years later then went to Nigeria for a couple of years with his father. Then back to England with his mother then (at 13) moved in with the parents of a team-mate.

Could be all that affecting his mind - or maybe it's just that having a of of fame/money young makes him feel he's already "made it" and doesnt need to strive further. People do have different levels of self-motivation.

Could be that fame and fortune has gone to his head and he has literally taken his eye of the ball a bit like Rashford at United

I always felt Deli Alli was destined to be a top player but the alarm bells starting ringing when Mouriniho took over at Spurs and it didn't take long for Conte to show him the door. Its a shame because he reminded me very much of Johnny White as a former Tottenham legend from my youth.

huge attitude problem that seems to make him unmotivated. It's a shame, he was a good player at his peak but multiple top managers have now failed with him

We have absolutely no idea what issues he has. It’s a bit off-centre to make some of the comments that have appeared on here. It may be something outside of football that has affected him badly. It may well be that he has fallen out of love with the game. Whatever it is, he needs to do what he feels is right for himself. If that’s a spell in Turkey, then good luck to him.

I hope he can get himself ‘right’ and resurrect his career.

I'm a bit surprised more players don't retire earlier.

I'm not saying this is what is happening with Dele but mid-twenties, multi-millionaire, more money than you could spend? I know sporting integrity etc etc blah blah... but can see how it'd be very tempting to pack it in.

Yes. Certainly if you don't enjoy playing the game anymore.

The same goes for managers too. If the rumours of Dyche's pay off are true, then I wouldn't blame him for never wanting to work again!

I suppose it’s easier to fill your time if you’ve multiple millions to afford to do whatever you fancy, whenever you fancy it.

It’s a hell of a lot of years to effectively do nothing though - I do think that people need a purpose, more than just playing golf or whatever else it may be.

Perhaps a bit different when reaching a proper retirement age but late twenties / early thirties.

I’d happily give it a whirl if the opportunity arose, but I reckon I’d soon be bored.

His life peaked when he broke the internet with that celebration.

5 years ago he looked like he’d be England’s best player for years. It seemed to go wrong at the same time it went wrong for Poccehttino too.

I suppose most players who reach professional standard can only get that good because they practise practise practise as children, before the money is rolling in, and they do that because they love playing football.

(And then some want to retire at the top because it's not so much fun playing at lower levels when you've been at the top, and some want to carry on for ever because they love the game so much. Chris Waddle played on till past 50, I believe. A cricketing equivalent would be W.G.Grace, who was still captain of his village 2nd XI until the year he died.)

2017/18: 14G, 17A

He clearly has ability, but it’s so mystifying how quickly he’s plummeted.

As for people calling him a d*ck, that’s pathetic. You don’t know anything about him other than what you read in the sh*t rags and see on social media. He’s a twenty-something year old guy with money and a twenty-something year old’s personality and faults.

Calling him a d*ck is just ridiculous, unless you often walk around and look at complete strangers while thinking, “he’s a dick.” In which case, it says a lot about you.

Spot on. I’m no body language expert but he just couldn’t give a to55 in that meeting with the arms folded etc.

He has never loved football because he has too much love for himself.

Think it's widely agreed he's one of the most talented English players to come through in the last 10-20 years. But his attitude is rotten, from the sound of things - arrogant, lazy, and let it all get to his head.

While I agree calling him a d*ck when you've never met him isn't really on, I think it's pretty clear he has an attitude problem. He's never suffered a major injury that would have curtailed him.

Every PL footballer is a 20-something year old with a tonne of money and the 20-something year old's personality and faults. But most still succeed, or get better etc. He just looks like a classic case of he thought he'd made it and put his feet up.

I suspect that he has. He will not be the first player nor the last to see their careers nosedive at Everton.
My heart goes out to Tarky and McNeil who have chosen to go there. Dele Alli needs a VK or even a Dyche figure to help rebuild his career.

Spot on.

Incredibly easy to just label people and/or be abusive to them without having a clue what may or may not be going on behind the scenes.

And none of us have any idea what it takes to be a top, top athlete. The dedication, the decades of personal sacrifice, the stress and pressure playing in front of huge crowds each week, every decision scrutinised. It’s surprising more sports stars don’t burn out earlier, tbh.

Good luck to him and hopefully he recovers a bit of form and confidence.

Shame this lad's career has hit the buffers, when he burst onto the scene at MK Dons he looked the real deal.

And he enjoyed a great few seasons at Spurs including their run to the CL final in 2019.

Plus he was a key member of England's WC squad of 2018.

Why he's suddenly drifted out of the picture at both club and international level is difficult to fathom, but maybe a change of scene in Turkey will serve him well, equally there is also a danger that he'll simply fade into obscurity in a mediocre league.

There's shades of Gazza in Dele's career, looked a great prospect in his youth, yet never quite reached the heights he really should have given his natural ability.

I agree he probably has an attitude problem that even Jose couldn't straighten out. It's the only thing to reasonably explain it, other than some kind of mental issue/block that we don't know about. Hopefully he can mature or the right manager comes along to get him playing again.

& none of us also have any idea what it's like to take home thousands of pounds a week it'd be fun finding out, you are making it sound as if he's getting up at the crack of dawn & toiling in a foundry for the day, he's doing a job he supposedly loves & getting handsomely rewarded for it, if we all had that ability on this forum we'd kill with both hands to swap lifestyles with him.

Yea that's right, if you earn shitloads of money doing a job you love then there is absolutely nothing physically or mentally that can go wrong in your life, where as if you have to get up early and work in a foundry (which I have done), you are on a hiding to nothing and will be eaten up with envy and jealousy of those high earners and the happiness only they can enjoy

The trade off certainly wouldn't be the bittersweet pill.
