Eng-SA 1st test
SA won toss and will field, so time to strap yourself in and enjoy some Bazball.
Anderson and Broad both play. I have to confess many of the SA side are new to me.

Re: Eng-SA 1st test
He's lucky that England have been winning games this summer, otherwise his form would have attracted even greater scrutiny.
I do agree though he does need to start posting scores if he's to retain his place.

I've a feeling we will struggle this morning, and I'm not usually the negative type, hope I'm wrong

In an amazing twist, Crawley nicks off to second slip for not many.

The ball has been moving all over the shop this morning.
Not easy for any batsman that has been playing white ball stuff recently.
SA bowling well.

55/4 Bairstow bowled for 0. Both these batting lineups will have big collapses in this series with the quality of both bowling attacks

Sadly you're not wrong. I still wouldn't rule England out of this test though, we've been here a few times this summer, then came good later in the match.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 11:20 amI've a feeling we will struggle this morning, and I'm not usually the negative type, hope I'm wrong

They could pay me £750,000 a year to go and try and slog a few, then fail like England’s top order usually do.
I think this “Bazz ball” is utter garbage to be honest.

Re: Eng-SA 1st test
A little like other sides don’t like batting in English conditions, we also struggle just as much on that first morning when it’s swinging and nipping about.
As they say, let’s wait until both sides have finished their first innings to judge too harshly

Pope the shining light among the carnage, now can he and Foakes put on a few post lunch.
SA have bowled well to be fair.

Re: Eng-SA 1st test
Foakes out 116-6, Pope batting with the tail now 61 not out, and but for him it would be a sorry looking card.
England losing wickets a crucial times, Stokes going to the final ball before lunch, then Foakes a couple of balls before the rain delay.

Re: Eng-SA 1st test
165 on this track could be competitive, England will need to bowl well though, but the SA batting unit doesn't convince me against Anderson and Broad.
Thank goodness Ollie Pope stuck around and got a good 73, in the context of what went on around him that's a terrific knock.

Re: Eng-SA 1st test
England need something to happen quick, SA already 43-0, but Elgar has been given a life, a tough chance not taken by Crawley at 2nd slip.
And when you've only posted 165 every opportunity however difficult has to be taken.

Jimmy's got another wicket for his tally, but South Africa going along nicely 120-1, and rapidly closing in on England's meagre 1st innings total.

I always admire your optimism in the cricket threads, tiger, so keep it up. 140/2 Potts just takes a wicket.tiger76 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 18, 2022 12:11 pm165 on this track could be competitive, England will need to bowl well though, but the SA batting unit doesn't convince me against Anderson and Broad.

Re: Eng-SA 1st test
Hmm! even the most optimistic England fans can't say it's going to plan, 158/2 at tea a mere 7 runs adrift, and unless England can magic up 2/3 quick wickets in the evening session it's going to be a tough ask for the batsmen 2nd dig.Vino blanco wrote: ↑Thu Aug 18, 2022 3:46 pmI always admire your optimism in the cricket threads, tiger, so keep it up. 140/2 Potts just takes a wicket.
The good news is this pitch seems to getting easier to bat on, and there is signs of variable bounce and even some sharp turn for Leach.
The problem for is England is there's been too many boundary balls, and when you're gifting easy runs it's tough to build any sustained pressure.
Mind you why are we surprised England look half baked with bat and ball, when the stupid ECB decide to play 2 weeks of panto cricket prior to a test match.
This is the inevitable result of zero preparation and time in the middle, and should serve as a warning, but of course it won't as the ECB only cares about milking their cash cow The Hundred.

Re: Eng-SA 1st test
England have duly conjured up some after-tea wickets (thanks mainly to Ben Stokes); SA now 211-6. Batsmen 6 and 8 at the crease on (respectively) 7 and 0 so some chance of keeping the deficit under 100.

South Africa recovering to 289-7 at close, lead of 124, not match winning yet, but England have an awful lot of work to claw themselves back into this contest.

Stokes still clearly looks like he’s carrying an injury which is worrying further down the line. Hopefully skittle them early tomorrow but the way Rabada is bowling he could be the match winner tomorrow.

Re: Eng-SA 1st test
South Africa 326 all out, lead of 161, Broad to the fore, so England need 2/3 guys to step up and make a score here.
Re: Eng-SA 1st test
Lot of hard work needed now. At 210 for 6 we had a chance to keep the lead below 100. But for some reason that someone will have to explain to me we switched to bowling short at the tail enders. If top of off works against top order batsmen why not the tail? And don't get me started on why our greatest ever opening bowler wasn't given the new ball this morning!

Can anyone explain why Crawley still gets selected? Should’ve been dropped from the squad a long time ago.

Re: Eng-SA 1st test
The discussion during one of the NZ games was that he plays the way McCullum and Stokes want him to play. The fact that he's not very good at it doesn't seem to matter.Flying Without Ings wrote: ↑Fri Aug 19, 2022 12:47 pmCan anyone explain why Crawley still gets selected? 81-4 Bairstow joins Crawley, Pope and Root back in the hutch, and still 80 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat.

Will be over today this. How Crawley still plays when he averages under 30 in first class cricket is unreal. Rather have Bell-Drummond if we’re picking from Kent.

Poor batting and poor bowling by one side countermanded by good batting and really good bowling by the other side ---only one winner and it will probably be today.
Never mind, we can all watch the abomination that is The Hundred!

A rapid 50 partnership between Stokes and Broad, probably far too late to affect the outcome, but entertaining for the crowd at least.

For a test to be over within two days worth of play is unacceptable. Nothing wrong with the track. Abject effort.
