What is Potts doing there?

Why wouldn’t you just hang around and hope Stokes does something. Thick.

Looks like Crawley will stay in for the next two tests.

Lost by an innings and 12 runs. Outstanding bowling but some daft dismissals. Crawley and Broad out for the next test please.

I know that they said that the Ashes series next season would finish early in order to accommodate The Hundred, however, I didn't know that we had arranged to finish Test Matches early this year so that we could turn over and watch the Hundred. Having said that, it is the Womens' Hundred taking place right now so I suppose that they are trying to level up the TV coverage so that thre are no complaints.

Crawley has to go, but why on earth would you drop Broad, he took wickets and was joint top scorer 2nd innings.

And if you are dropping Broad who are you bringing in considering most of England's quicks are presently injured.

The only ones who can take any credit from that are Lees who battled hard 2nd innings, and he's beginning to look like a test opener now, Broad for his wholehearted approach with bat and ball, Potts who bowled well during the SA innings without much reward, and of course Pope, Jimmy was steady without looking that threatening, and Stokes briefly hauled England back into contention on the 2nd evening.

But the lack of prep, particularly for the batsmen was laid bare for all to see, and I sincerely hope the loss of weekend revenue for a Lords test wakes the ECB up, and they dump this stupid Hundred nonsense ASAP, sadly I doubt they'll pay any heed.

Least the players can go back to their counties and practise their test match skills in the Hundred!

I thought Atherton said they’d announced the squad for the next two but they’d actually picked the squad for the first two games.

So barring any other call ups the options are Brooks, Overton and Robinson.

I don’t think fatigue is going to be an issue so the older lads will play.

Brooks isn’t an opener so I’d be surprised if he comes in for Crawley.

Captaincy was a big issue for England in this test. Our tactics in the field were inexplicable on Day 2. Had we bowled good length and line and set appropriate fields - as SA did, then we could most likely have been facing a relatively small 1st innings deficit.
It's fine being aggressive, but being disciplined and controlled is also important.
I wonder how we would have bowled on Day 1 had we won the toss. South Africa took full advantage of favourable conditions.

Agreed the field setting and bowling yesterday evening was silly, gifted SA 70 easy runs. A test match to forget for England with few performances up to the mark.

Slightly as a side issue, although it does touch on our poor bowling yesterday, when are the authorities going to clamp down and start penalising wide balls in test cricket? People are paying a hell of a lot of money to watch ball after ball go way over somebody's head or down the leg side and in limited overs cricket it would never be acceptable. Yesterday I saw one particular over from Stokes where 3 balls were too high to reach, 2 went way down the leg side and the last one was an off side wide all day long. Unsurprisingly it ended up a maiden! Totally wrong for the paying public to have to put up with when not one ball would be legal in a limited overs game! What's the difference?

Think we were bowled out twice in less than 84 overs. Hard to imagine that happening in any sport or its equivalent and the same team being chosen again six days later. Test cricket used to be the focus of a summer but now it seems like a sideshow at times.
