Fair enough but Ash would represent Austria and there are examples I am sure within the list above where the nationality has come from country represented rather than born.

Here is an example.

Barnes isn't eligible to represent Austria, mostly because he is from Somerset.

I have just dug deeper and seen that he is ineligible to play for the senior Austrian side. That’s a reason not to add it on the list. Hadn’t realised that had happened even though he could have qualified through grandparents.

Added NZ just after I’d originally posted it. Was intended to go on with Australia.

I’ve not included such as Nigeria for Ade Akinbiyi. I know he played for them but he’s English.
But are we including Scott Arfield as an authentic Canadian? :D

Just looked it up. Born in Mauritania but played for Guinea. Not sure where that puts him on this list.

Thought he'd played more than 14 times for us too.

Didn't we almost sign the guy who played for West Brom who scored an unusual goal against England (direct from a corner?)

Was he Macedonian?

Played for West Brom before that and they were able to get a work permit for him. I can't remember the details now but I suspect he had dropped off in terms of international calls by the time we had him on trial. I know we weren't confident in getting the work permit. Just checked, it was 2006 when we tried to sign him.

Found these quotes:

Steve Cotterill: “I don’t know what else we could have done. We just need a bit of luck at the moment.”

Bill McCartney, Senior Manager of Work Permits: “I am really sorry that the appeal for Artim Sakiri has been turned down. Whereas we don’t normally comment on these type of appeals, I felt that Steve Cotterill could not have done any more in putting forward Burnley Football Club’s case for appeal than he did.”

Even with the historical lists that others have provided, I can only get eleven

Please can someone name the thirteen?

According to transfermarkt we have a Polish kid in our under 18s, Wiktor Gromek, not sure of the accuracy or if we can even count him due to not being near the first team at the moment.

It may be one of them where he was born in the UK but his parents or grandparents are Polish, cannot find information where he was born, rightly as he is under 18 but transfrmarket just lists his nationality as Polish.

The club have changed his first name a few times, seem to have struggled spelling it but I think it's Wiktor. I've just found something about him being called up for Poland at u15 level but it could be his family and he could be English born.

With respect to Dave Roberts, good that he has this list and that he identifies 80 players that he doesn’t know about (and therefore how he knows there are eighty unknowns is beyond me), however I can’t for the life of me follow the logic of classifying by birth, except where he doesn’t, and classifies as country represented. You can’t have both unless they’re called out as such, and from the image above, they don’t look to be.

Not sure where you are coming from here. It reads to me that there are 80 known players that have no caps and he can’t find a birthplace. Therefore he can’t give them a nationality. Or am I missing something?

That’s how I’ve understood it as well.

Austria would be there if Barnes had played for them, but as he hasn’t he’s one of those under England whereas Duff, Paterson & BPF are all under Northern Ireland despite being England born

Edit - just seen the graphic above which shows we have previously had an Italian player. Who was that?
