I've always thought "Rise, mill town, rise" would work well as a sort of slogan but I think I'm in the minority.
Quite like that actually!

I think everyone should just sit down, say nothing and breakout into a round of applause if we score a goal.

Yes, because singing a misogynistic song with foul lyrics and sitting in silence are the only two options.

On a similar point, why on earth are we bombarded with the phrase “We are the Longside” on LED boards all around the ground including, most laughably of all, on the Bob Lord Stand?

Does someone need to explain to Pace and Company what the Longside actually was?
Simple explanation and the grammar is in front of you. In this instance “The Longside” is a proper noun, designated by the pronoun. The song does not say “this is the Longside.”

Fast forward to today when it’s the CFS crowd that actually sing it, it is not inferred that it is reserved only for them, perhaps with a sense of nostalgia for not actually standing on it as well as “being it” and at the exclusion of all other sides of the ground

Simple really. lEDs good and IMHO add a visual element to the audible atmosphere

Being full of something, including female body parts, is not necessarily a measure of something to be proud of. Surely the measure would be the quality of it…….. and within that I include the third element. I’ll leave it to the locals to muse on that. I couldn’t possibly comment

I remember being in a pub on Holloway Road that was banged out with Clarets before our FA Cup game at Arsenal in 2008. Everone in the pub, including a lot of women, were singing it.

It's been a traditional football song for years but I can kind of understand some people not liking the content especially if minors are about or the female species but it is what it is & that's part of football in song connection, if some people are that offended maybe give football a miss & a Mary Poppins musical might be up your street.

In 1987 we were still singing the original, as per this clip showing fans before the Orient game.

Certainly don’t recall the current version any earlier than the late 80s. Awful lyrics and definitely should be consigned to the dustbin of history

It could have been around 1990-91 when we started getting larger crowds back and big away followings regularly. Everyone started getting a bit giddy.

I’m not offended personally , it’s just a really sad and pathetic song. I notice the defence of this one particular song is “let’s just sit in silence then and forget atmosphere”. Don’t recall saying that, i couldn’t have been more specific. As Rileybobs said, is silence the alternative? I also said there can’t be expected to be no bad language, I’m not that naive. But surely we can do better than that?

"Tradition" is always a poor excuse not to ask questions about our own behavior. Behavior which we admit might offend women and children so the suggested solution is not for us to change, but for them not to attend football...

It is traditional whether we agree to or not, I'm a vegetarian & lot's of people enjoy Sunday roasts that's traditional for people to do that generations upon generations that have been doing for years, it's not up to people to change when the choice is there.

But there are vegetarian alternatives, that's choice and inclusivity. Traditions have evolved and changed with the times.
What alternative are you offering to women/parents/children? Dcome to the football is your suggestion.

There were two Burnley versions of when the saints go marching in. The traditional ….” Oh when the clarets “….
Then in the early seventies when Ralph Coates was in his prime
The alternative started. That was
“Oh Ralphie Coates is wonderful….repeat,
Full of life full of go full of vigour Ralphie Coates is wonderful”
That became the basis for the stupid current one.

It's not only 50yr old men singing it, plenty of women have and still do.

If you don't take your daughter in the CF end then she probably won't hear the words sung.
It's a simple song, sung by simple folk.

It's a good few years since I heard a rendition of the tiresome "get your tits out for the lads", which used to be sung whenever an attractive (or sometimes not) female steward or police officer etc walked past a group of fans.

I guess it's died out because times change. It's about time this one went the same way.

It'll only go that same way when people stop singing it & as things stand plenty of people find the song acceptable, let people get things off their chest & release masculine hormones or maybe nursery rhymes could be the way forward.

Hardly surprising Burnley fans a labelled ‘backward’ when a song from the 80’s is thought ‘edgy’ by those who join in. A song that displays misogyny, narcism and lack of respect. You only need to walk the streets of the North West the same ignorance displayed on every street corner.

If fans need to sound like sexual predators to have ‘atmosphere’ then they lack both imagination and intelligence. I would think ‘backwards’ was a decent description, if I wasn’t a Burnley fan.
We sing about “*******” rovers as our primary song. That is an offensive term and children are present. I’d bet money that you’ve sang it at least once.

Highly, highly offensive term for a certain demographic of the country and very demeaning, demoralising and not particularly inclusive.

“*******” “Tits” “fanny”.

There is no sliding scale of morality. Either all of it is ok or none of it is, and whilst if you want to pretend that there is a sliding scale and you can draw your own arbitrary line between what is and isn’t acceptable, you’ve no right to expect the others to do the same.

Furthermore, rather than just moaning about it, the people in here are welcome to get together and have a go at putting together some alternatives and trying to get them floated at the match so that eventually people don’t use them anymore. What’s stopping you?

Oh, and it amuses me no end that the word ******* is asterisked out but tits and fanny remains as ok, further reinforcing my point.

I suggest that the judge, jury and executioners of what is acceptable to sing get straight on to the board moderators and drag this horrendous oversight kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

Man Utd are the bees knees when it comes to new songs.

They have the best away fans in the country easily.

They’re version of ‘Bertie Mee said to Matt Busby’ is class and puts ours to shame, sing slow and can actually understand the words.
Pete Boyle is the man behind many of their songs (often to be found enjoying a pint in The Peveril of the Peak) - the songs are nearly always original, they’re really the leaders in English football when it comes to original, decent, catchy chants.

Your post is the pointless one.

This is a BFC discussion board where fans express their opinions about all things BFC. Of course we know that us and the OP aren't in charge of what people do or don't sing, just like we're not in charge of who we sign or who starts in the matchday 11. But should we also stop discussing tactics and the merits of potential signings because our posts don't change anything?

People who use their computer to seek out a discussion board then moan about discussions happening on it are strange

It's a real shame we don't have more creative chants like Liverpool do. I've never understood why our main one is about a club down the road and not about us. And since taking my kids on I've realised there are hardly any that I can help them learn, and this one in particular is pretty vulgar!

Feel exactly the same now that my nephew has started coming on with us.

I'll admit it may sound double standards, but I still sing NNN albeit a censored version every now and then, but I can honestly say I've never sung "Oh Burnley" or "Who's that..." and never will

Not sure how it is “demonstrability” (demonstrably) not nonsense… when there is no demonstration as such to counter the argument. I really don’t need you to explain further, as you seem to think your view is o much more valid than mine, your overall position is perfectly clear. I on the other hand cannot bring myself to debate with someone who has clearly such a polarised view, that they refuse to accept any argument against their position. No offensive taken or intended.

I don't like either version. Just leave the song/tune to the Scummers who sort of own it. The stealing of other teams pet songs is sort of pathetic. Like hearing Chelsea fans singing Blaydon races when most of them have never been that far north or know where Blaydon is.

If we are going to do that, we could just take the **** out of ourselves and others by singing something totally daft
"oh burnely is fu**ing woke... etc..
It's full of hummus, tofu and liberals"
Would confuse everybody.
One of Merthyr's best ideas was to have a mascot called "Shaggy the sheep". we know what we are.
Shaggy is now retired, but it was funny while it lasted - including in the annual mascot Olympics.

So we just need to find something that is our usp and adapt songs to fit:-
To new orders "Everything's gone green"
Oh we've got beef pies, oh we've got lamb pies, oh we've got pork pies... But we've never seen anything like kompany before. Up down all around, pass the ball all round the ground. Tonight I think we'll take you down.
We'll get three points before we go home.

Which will make no sense unless you know the song. It was just an example.

Or the rather simpler "Pies. Pies, baby".

Finding songs that you can substitute "Mills" for and have it still make sense is tougher.

Let's just stick with the Anti Football song. Simple Pigbag tune to follow and only 2 words to remember !

Man Utd are the bees knees when it comes to new songs.

They have the best away fans in the country easily.

They’re version of ‘Bertie Mee said to Matt Busby’ is class and puts ours to shame, sing slow and can actually understand the words.
Funnily enough I remember that being a Liverpool song - Bertie Mee said to Bill Shankly - have you heard of the North Bank Highbury - Shanks said no I don't think so but I've heard of the Liverpool FC.

The Utd song doesn't even rhyme and the Liverpool version now quoted something about Anny Field Aggro, which I can't recall.

In my Lancashire home is also a Liverpool song from the famous folk song about having a cathedral to spare.

In terms of the "Oh Burnerlee is wonderful" song I recall the thrill of singing something unacceptable but that has long gone and it is a bit toe curling now. It comes to us all in the end - we become embarrassed by the people we were. Well quite a few of us anyway.

I know, but thanks for correcting me. Cardinal sin of not checking autocorrect, my point is now invalid. :(.

Yeah, there isn’t a sliding scale of morality in this situation. You have most certainly sang our flagship song, I dare say almost all in this thread will have recently. Highly offensive, highly unfair to sing that at a ground and a place with high teenage pregnancy rates, high rates of absent parents, high levels of those in care. So unless you recognise that all of them should be banned, or none of them should you are a hypocrite and we shouldn’t discourse any further.

Cheers!

Utd version is "Bertie Mee said to Matt Busby, have you heard of the North Bank at Highbury, no said Matt you cockney tw#t, but Ive heard of the Stretford Enders"

No idea who sang it first but back in the 90s at Uni some kid who supported Utd used to always start singing it when he was p*ssed

I've logged in to like this original post. The song is disgraceful and anyone singing it can get in the bin. Some really shameful comments i'll not bother picking out but we know what you are.

I seem to remember the Kop singing it back in the 70s. I think the song originated when Liverpool and Arsenal were big rivals in the early 70s just prior to the emergence of Revie's Leeds United.

Bertie Mee was the manager of Arsenal and Shank's Liverpool's manager albeit Busby and Mee were managers at the same time in the 60s.

😂 I'd personally find it quite funny if the fans of a women's team sang that there town was full of c**k
To be fair most women's teams would sing about the former 😉
