Finally, after an exhaustive search , we have some names to the faces on the photo......the major disappointment is that, Tommy Lawton, one of the all-time greats of the game. did not appear until a few months later.....anyway....
......Billy Dougall (trainer) one of our greatest servants of all-time, Jim Brown, Arthur Smith, Tommy Wallace, Bob Scott, George Waterfield, Alick Robinson, Tom Clegg (chairman), Alf Boland (manager)......Front row.....Albert Alderman, Robert Syme, Teddy Hancock, Cecil Smith, Tom Prest & Percy Downes.

Good shout for Tommy Cummings, TT, a career at Burnley that lasted almost 16 years. In that time he made 479 total appearances with just 3 goals, BUT one of those goals was widely regarded as the Greatest goal ever seen at Turf Moor.

As for that Burnley team group in 1950/51.....

Back Row......Reg Kirkham, Tommy Cummings, Jimmy Strong, Harold Mather, Arthur Woodruff & Jackie Chew.

Front Row......Roy Stephenson, Billy Morris, George Bray, Bill Holden, Harry Potts & Jack Hays.

By which time he must have been approaching 30 years old.....He had a number of moves after Burnley before Ramsey finally brought the best out of him in '61.
Dad always rated him very highly.

Just had a read of Ray Bennion & Billy Doudal & found that both died at the age of 71 in the mid sixties.
Ray played over 300 times for Manchester United before joining Burnley in 1932 before retiring two years later & joining the coaching staff, giving 20 years of faithful service.
Billy played about seventy times for us & was briefly manager before I’ll health caused his resignation, becoming physio for a number of years.
Love these unsung heroes of yesteryear!

That team photo must have been taken second half of 1977/78 or start of pre-season 1978-79.

Rob Higgins is next to Pashley not Tony Arins.

I have a glass plate of the goal -my father was the chief photographer for the Burnley Express and always said it was the greatest goal he had ever seen. It was scored against Newcastle on the Turf (and Dad was a Geordie!). It must have been in the early 1950s. Iwas regarded as too young to go on a big match like that so I didn’t see it personally.

Scored on 19th January 1952. I don’t need to look that one up, it was the first league game we played after I was born.

I suspect 78/79 given Morley & Hall are on it. Pash moved to Blackpool in August 78 but initially on loan so every chance he was on the team pic.

Then we go to Burnden Park the following week and Bill Holden scores the most sensationial goal......tough to make the journey home that night, but what the hell, that was some strike from Holden that won the points.

That's going to be Mark Allen and Phil Ray.

Correct. Both Mark Allen’s appearances were away from Turf Moor in a wet week that saw us draw at Walsall but end our unbeaten run at Exeter. He scored in the 88th minute at St James’s Park after Exeter had scored in the 83rd and 87th minute. Kevin Young then had a perfectly good goal ruled out. Phil Ray played in the 0-0 home draw with Bolton and then by all accounts had a severe bout of home sickness for his native North East

I was at Exeter that day, getting a 90 minute soaking on the open away end - it made for an uncomfortable long coach journey home. I can still picture that disallowed last minute goal as Clarets fans celebrated wildly only to see the linesman raise a late flag - there was a strong rumour at the time that the liner had been/was an Exeter season ticket holder...
Neither Allen or Ray had any notable careers after leaving Burnley though Allen did play in Finland for a while.

Unless my memory is playing tricks it was disallowed for offside when there was an Exeter defender standing on the line. After the match a number of us got a lift back to St David’s in a Black Maria. Those were the days!

Found a couple of team pics hidden among other stuff - surprising what you find when trying to tidy up a bit.

Scandalous decision at Exeter right at the end. Clearly onside and we were reliably informed by the then Burnley Express reporter that the linesman who flagged was an Exeter season ticket holder. Don't know which linesman it was but both were from the South West, one Swanage and the other Paignton.

It is Jim Scott, played just three first team games in a ten year career at the Turf.

I did see him play once, he was in the team against Chelsea when we made ten changes.
