What a superb thread my thanks to all involved. The 1889.90 picture shows a magnificent looking trophy, is that the Lancashire Senior Cup? Was always led to believe it was the best looking trophy going.

Halfway down page4 there is a photo of our reserves with the Central League Champions and the Lancashire Senior Cup trophies. The one on the right looks similar to the one from 1889 which is blurred so can’tconfirm.

Double Central League winners and Lancashire Senior Cup to boot. So many of them went on to have substantial EFL careers and most at the top level.
Back: Dave Walker, Walter Joyce, John Talbut,?, Harry Thomson, Brian O'Neil, George Bray(manager), Willie Irvine, Willie Morgan.
Front: ?, Freddie Smith, Trevor Meredith,?, Andy Lochhead, Arthur Bellamy,Ian Towers, Johnny Price Mick Buxton
I'm sure Royboy can fill in the blanks and I know I'll be embarrassed for missing them.

Can confirm that they are indeed the same trophy, albeit played for in different named competitions.
When we won the trophy in 1960 and 1962 it was known as the Lancashire Senior Cup but way back in 1890 it was known merely as the Lancashire Cup. That year we beat Blackburn 2-0 in the Final at Thorneyholme Road Accrington.

That would have been some competition back then in the real Lancashire. ManU, City, Liverpool and Everton were all in the county back then.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 17, 2022 11:53 amCan confirm that they are indeed the same trophy, albeit played for in different named competitions.

We beat Rossendale 4-3, Haydock 15-0 and Higher Walton 7-0, then another game for which I don't have details before beating Blackburn 2-0 in the Final. McLardie and Stewart scored our goals.

Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
Royboyclaret, I’m searching my records and as of now, I’m unable to establish IF we did play a Semi Final. The Lancs Cup, as it was known at the start date of the competition in 1879, was initially played for by 40 teams.
The LFA being formed in 1878. In the first final played between Bbn Rovers and Darwen. Before we were formed the rivalry. The rivalry between those two teams was as bitter as ours is towards them. Games were abandoned, because of players brawling, or the crowd encroaching onto the field of play. Bbn even signed a local well known cricketer and Fair ground pugilist, to pressure other teams players. PNE were due to play Accrington Stanley at Bbn in the 1887 final, but they refused to play there. So the losing Semi Finalist played each other for the right to play in the Final.
There were many many more strange goings on, with Clubs, at matches and within the LFA committee, from the early onset. So a no result, or walkover SF wouldn’t surprise me.

Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
Tricky Trevor, Everton were refused entry into the LFA cup in 1886, as their team was not able to show proof of their ability, to play at the level expected. When they did gain entry, they didn’t play their first team players, which was the rule. They failed to compete in some ties and withdrew from the Competition, for a season. In the early 1900s Everton we’re fined £100 for fielding a weakened team in a cup match v Liverpool.

Seven years apart (separated by WW1), but both teams captained by the incomparable Tommy Boyle.

1928-29 & 1929-30.The players I can identify are Louis Page, back right on the first, front right on the second and third, George Beel, 2nd from right the first two and 2nd from left the final year. Billy Down is the keeper '28-29 and George Somerville in '29-30. Down was the starting keeper both seasons but Somerville replaced him in the 29-30 season after Down ruptured his kidney at Deadwood. There were fears for his life, thankfully he survived but he never played again. Stan Bowsher is to the left of Somerville in '29-30. Tommy Willingham is back right in '31-32.
I'm sure Royboy can name them all.

Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
TT, you've done a great job there highlighting two of the legends of our Club in Louis Page and George Beel. George had an amazing goals/games ratio including 11 hat-tricks. I don't think even the great Willie Irvine could emulate that. As for Tommy Willighan, I wonder if he is related to one of our staunchest current supporters, Steve Willighan. I do know that Steve's Dad, also called Tommy, was a footballer. Perhaps Steve can confirm, if he reads this.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Mon Dec 19, 2022 11:05 am1928-29 & 1929-30.The players I can identify are Louis Page, back right on the first, front right on the second and third, George Beel, 2nd from right the first two and 2nd from left the final year. My Dad always referred to this period as entering our "Wilderness Years", and of course we were relegated from Division One in 1929/30. Your third photo was taken before the game at Molineux against Wolves in Jan.'32, Dad often referred to this game, not sure if it was his first away game. Anyway we lost 1-3 with Jones scoring our only goal.
The line-up was.......Back row, left to right......John Schofield, John Hall, Stan Bowsher, Richard Twist, Jim Brown, Charlie Bates (trainer), Tommy Willighan.
Front row.......Sam Jennings, George Beel, Evan Jenkins, George Waterfield, Tom Jones & Louis Page.

Just heard directly from Steve Willighan that Thomas is indeed his great-grandad.
Also, incredibly, George Waterfield who appears on the 1931/32 photo, is Steve's great-uncle.

This was effectively the start of a new era with life "after Tommy Boyle" beginnning to take shape. David Taylor had arrived and captained the side, that's him top left on the back row of the first pic with keeper Jerry Dawson and big Joe Anderson at the other end. Legendary Bob Kelly on the front row.
The team was virtually the same throughout the whole season, as follows.......Dawson, Smelt, Taylor, Emerson, Bassnett, Watson, Fisher, Kelly, Anderson, Cross & Mosscrop/Weaver.

Other team photos of the 1914 cup winners don't have them with badges. On the colourisation I wonder if the green background of the badge on Sewell was in fact claret like the others?
I went on Google and searched 'Burnley 1914 cup winners team photo' and there are some nice ones including this said to be from 1913-14. No team names were given:

Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
That's some squad photo, TT.....Just a mere 34 players on the pic (if my count is correct)......Albeit a number of junior players on the front row. Plenty of players who didn't get much of a look in the first team but nevertheless decent players to have around, big Dave Merrington, Colin Blant, Ray & Stan Ternent to name just a few.
Two legendary centre-forwards, of course, in Ray Pointer and Willie Irvine. If the photo had been taken a couple of weeks later Pointer would by then have been transferred to Bury and for Irvine it was the season of the remarkable 29 goals in 42 League games.
We finished the season in third position of the top league and as a result qualified for Europe the following year.
