Played his final game for us just past his 39th birthday
So, a few contenders.....but looks like Len Smelt, at 41, takes the honours.

Arthur Woodruff, whose Burnley career spanned three decades, played his last game for us in April'52 just seven days after his 39th birthday......then along came Gordan Cowans.

Not to forget Grezza......in our promotion season of '08/'09 he played in all 61 league and cup games at the age of 37.....and then became the oldest player ever to make a Premier League debut.....

But, fair play to Len Smelt......can't see that ever being beaten.

Very well said ecc.
This thread has grown into an absolute joy with some quite beautiful contributions including lots of superb images which I'd imagine that very few will have had the pleasure of even having seen before and the sheer depth of knowledge of many of the contributors is incredible.
Considering how revered both the 72-73 Second Division championship side and season are remembered serves as a reminder of just what an wonderful and memorable achievement we are on the cusp of once again, so as we all sit here this afternoon in great anticipation this one seems a fitting image.

Good to know that you are pleased with the way your thread has progressed, ClaretGeorgina.

Really has become something of a classic.....and, might have said before, Page 4, from halfway down, still gives me the goosebumps.

Pleased would be a real understatement Royboyclaret! Now into 11 pages, it's a real joy and I've even gone right through it from post #1 a few times and as it grows it keeps getting better and I can't be the only one who was bowled over with, amongst many, many others, the 1910 team picture posted by TrickyTrevor, it's a real beauty.
Just with regards to TrickyTrevor's stunning '55/'56 photo taken at Gawthorpe, you mention that it is a particularly meaningful photograph and close your post with "So many stories behind that photo". Are there any further details which you might be happy/willing to share with regards to why that is one you hold in special regard? I must also admit that I'd no idea that Burnley FC even trained at Gawthorpe in the 1950s - I thought it didn't come about until the 1960s, these are the kind of little nuggets of information which pop up and make the thread all the richer.

Sure you will understand, some I can share, others unfortunately not.....

Look at Des Lancaster there, bottom row, end right....played just one competitive first team game but was so proud to be included on that photo......Peter McKay there, also bottom row, hit the headlines as a goal poacher in '55'/'56 when he became the first Burnley player since George Beel in 1931 to score 25 league goals in a season.....David Smith there top row, unsung hero if ever there was one.....Would love to go on, but probably best not to.....Still that Page 4, from Willie Irvine down, remains very special.

I’ve made a list of all the years we’ve covered so far. I’ll post it tomorrow as we are within an hour of kick off.
Then we can see the gaps and see what we can do.

Top work, TT.....Question is, does your list include the remarkable link by Croydon Claret on page 9 ?......there has to be close to 200 team photos on that link.

Hear what you're saying, TT.....But if we were to include those on the link then the missing seasons would be seriously reduced.

Superb action shot of Andy Lochhead, with the Longside in the background.

Nobody messed with Andy!.......plenty of opposition players tried, but they all came second.

You must be so proud of your Dad's scoring achievements whilst at Turf Moor.

I know I'm proud my son is called Irvine.
Is that because your wife liked Willie a lot? :o
