Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
Have we had this pic before, the team from 1905/06? Plus one of the Turf same period
They are both from The Book of Football (1906) which I was given many years ago. It needs some repairs!

The players in the photo are:
?, Colin Blant, ?, Ralph Coates(over GKs shoulder), Chris Nichol, Brian O’Niel, Stan Ternent, Willie Morgan, Sammy Todd,?,?, Dave Merrington.
All bar Chris Nichol played for the first team and all had very good careers.

Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
Geoff Nulty over Joe Browns shoulder? Bit confused as per the dates Morgan left 67? If the goalie is Rodney Jones he didn't arrive until about then. Coates and Morgan were well above reserve level by then surely.

Our Reserves were involved in an International Junior Class tournament in Bochum, Germany in 1965. This image will be from that tournament.

Willie Morgan captained the side and I'm pretty certain we beat Ajax Amsterdam 2-1 in the first game.
Rodney Jones arrived a couple of years later and I have the keeper as Bernard Kay.

1. Picture should be on your PC.longsidetrumpet wrote: ↑Mon Jan 09, 2023 6:51 pmAgain, any advice on uploading a pic. Looks straightforward but I can’t make it work
2. Underneath this box are two tabs, Options and Attachments. Click on Attachments.
3. Click 'Add Files'.
4. Using the window, locate your photo, click on it and click 'Open'. This will place it in the Attachments and there should be a green disc with a tick in it on the right.
5. Click a position in the message box and then click 'Place in Line'. The attachment will appear in text form. Check all is OK by looking at 'Preview' when the picture should appear. If you picture is too big you need to make it smaller with some programme on your PC or find a free image sizer on the internet.

Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
Now the keeper looks like Rod Jones to me, he arrived in 1967, when I think this tournament took place during the summer. I used to have the newspaper-style programme for the tournament, which I passed on to Burnley official historian Shaun Borman.
It was a squad mainly of reserves, with a smattering of first teamers.
Around that time there was a local born goalie Bernard Kay, who may have played in the A or B team. He later played for Burnley GSOB

Have we not established this tournament happened in 1965?
Rodney Jones came to Burnley from Rotherham in March'67.

I’ve just looked at the full team line-up pic on Alamy and the pennant says Burnley FC 1965. So I’m wrong. But the keeper looks so much like Rod Jones

Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
I am sure the goalkeeper in the picture is not Bernard Kay, the BGS goalkeeper from 1962/63. (By chance I arrived on a campsite in Spain about 7 years ago and ended up camping next to Bernard)
I think it might be Rod Jones because I have a memory that he left Burnley to join somebody like Ashton United ( might have wrong club) before being transferred back to Burnley around 1967.

I don't remember Billy Gaskell as a reserve team player at the Turf but rather as the swimming instructor at North Street Baths in the late 60's, when we Heasandford kids made regular weekly visits.

Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
Re photos on PCs. How does anyone load a photo onto a computer?.
Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
It needs to be scanned. If you don't have a scanner (usually these days a printer can scan too) you need to ask a friend to do this and he can put it on a CD or other storage device and you can then move it to your PC. He could also e-mail it to you but you may lose some quality.
An alternative might be to photograph the photo with your digital camera or phone and transfer to your PC. You will probably lose some quality this way too but it's better then nothing.
Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
Thanks Hipper, I will give it a try, but will first ask my neighbour to oversee my effort.

The only keeper not mentioned from that era is Matt Tyrie, Scottish keeper. Not saying it's him mind.
There is a pic of him on Google with our other Scottish keepers, Harry Thomson & Adam Blacklaw. I am unable to download on here.

Bernard Kay was in the same class as I at BGS, and was one of my best pals, so much so that we stayed in contact well after leaving school. I am sure that the goalkeeper in the photo is not Bernard.

Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
This is turning into a serious poser. The only player on TT's latest team photo that I was unconvinced of regarding identification was the keeper. It's now looking more and more unlikely to be Bernard Kay, so the all important next question is "Who the heck is it?"claretfern wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 1:46 pmThe only keeper not mentioned from that era is Matt Tyrie, Scottish keeper. I guess Matt Tyrie is a possibility, claretfern, but not sure of the facial likeness in your attachment.
Any other suggestions as to the identity of this mysterious goalkeeper ?

TT, on your '65/'66 group photo on page 5 I suspect all four of those players will be on the front row. All young lads and outfield players. This is a major poser, perhaps it is Matt Tyrie but I'm not convinced.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 2:52 pmFrom the '65-'66 squad list I put on page 5 the players I wouldn't know are: Done, Lunn, Shepherd and Wilson. Re: 1960s BFC squad photo
I am becoming more convinced that the mystery goalkeeper is Rod Jones. I suggested earlier that he left Burnley to join Ashton United before returning.
I have just looked Rod Jones up on Google, which shows he moved from Ashton to Rotherham and then to Burnley, that has to be too much of a coincidence for my initial suggestion to be wrong. I clearly remember having a conversation with a friend when I suggested It was a financial mistake for Burnley to release him and then pay a transfer fee to get him back but my friend argued that they had saved on his wages for that time.
What is remarkable is how things have changed in the nearly 60 years.I remember Willie Morgan having, in my opinion, his best ever game for Burnley on Boxing Day 1963 and yet 2 years later he was playing in a youth tournament alongside other established first team players.
Am also interested in the post from Vino Blanco, did you leave school when Bernard did or did you stay on into sixth form? If you stayed on you probably played in the same football (and cricket) team as I did!

I remember Lunn and Done from my time watching the reserves as a young lad. Also Tony Morrin, who went on to play for Stockport & Exeter. Can't recall Shepherd or Wilson. Other names from those reserve games was a half back called Peter(?) Bourne and the more well-k nown Garry France.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 2:52 pmFrom the '65-'66 squad list I put on page 5 the players I wouldn't know are: Done, Lunn, Shepherd and Wilson. Billy Marshall, Jim Furnell and Ian Lawson didn't get much of a look in that season as the first eleven almost picked itself.......But, once again, where's Jimmy Robson......Was he camera shy, or what ?
