No squad today. just Dobo with a couple of trophies.

Two superb photos, Trevor, not seen that second one before. Terrific header from Waldo to win the Charity Shield for us in '73 at Maine Road. It was third time lucky for us in the Charity Shield having lost to Tottenham in 1921 and drawn against Wolves in 1960.

Well, at least this was another trophy to add to the rest. We had a few cracks at this competition in the late '70's but this was by far our most successful, with the two wins home and away against Celtic probably the most memorable.

The final against Oldham was also a two-legged affair and I remember driving home after the first leg at Oldham having won 4-1 and thinking the Cup was already won. However we somehow contrived to lose the home leg 0-1 against a poor Oldham side.

Sadly the squad was now heading in the wrong direction with just an average finish to the season in Division Two, but things were about to get even worse the following season.

Hi Roy, was that first leg the night it was bitterly cold? It was either that one or an FA Cup tie around the same period.
I had my programme from the home leg autographed by a few of the side. They use to come playing tennis at Loveclough park. I could stand at the back door and watch them.

Sorry TT, no recollection of the weather, but I do recall a couple of Steve Kindon special goals that night.....he really was one exciting player.

The great Martin Dobson lifting his third trophy as Clarets captain. the 81-82 3rd division Champions.
There is an unnamed player between David Miller and Vince Overson. I think it is Mark Allen can anyone confirm?

I too think it is Mark Allen. I saw him play for our reserves once as a trialist after he'd been away from the club for a while. He looked quality compared with what was on show for Burnley but we didn't re-sign him.

I don't remember Billy Wright. It seems he's had a long and quite interesting but not overly active career, mostly in Australia and as a New Zealand international:

Last time I saw him he cold called on us selling double glazing. Of course I invited him in for a Clarets chat and a brew.

This is a cracker, TT, one that provides more questions than answers.

For instance, where are the likes of Tommy Cassidy, Kevin Young (who played 37 of the 46 games that season), Stuart Robertson and even Flynny who had a couple of substitute appearances ?

And yet there are players featured who never kicked a ball that season, Billy Wright, Billy O'Rourke and even Lee Dixon.

With them having the trophy I’d guess this was taken at the following pre-season.

Is it Mark Allen ?.....this is where we desperately miss the input of ClaretTony......a real shame he doesn't feel comfortable to return to the messageboard......We would have the solution in seconds.

Just realised I don’t have a squad photo for Stans’ 99-00 promotion side. Can’t find one through google either. If anybody can help I’d be grateful.

A very special season was '08/'09, with a slow start (something like two points from the first four games) followed by a memorable finish.......a perfectly balanced side all performing at the very top of their game......some fabulous goals along the way, but those final three, Pato and Thommo away at Reading and Wade's unforgettable strike at Wembley, will live long in the memory.

Absolutely, conyoviejo.

Said before, those 29 sensational goals in 42 games in '65/'66 were very special, and I also witnessed Ray Pointer at his very best.

What a superb team that was, simply a joy to watch.

Our Ashley on the pic, of course. He was banging them in 8 years ago, including two crucial goals in the last six games that season against Wigan and Barnsley. What a servant he has been for our Club, and continues to be so.

Great group photo of the '15/'16 Champs, TT.........Although naming them all might be something of a challenge.

Where's the OP ClaretGeorgina?........She must be impressed the way her thread has progressed. Absolutely nothing wrong with a gentle journey through our history as a reminder just what a unique club we are associated with.

Hi Royboyclaret - I'm here and still regularly tuning in to this great thread and yes, I am impressed!
We've not been back to the Roggerham Gate since, but when we do I will get the project to display all the squad names under the photo back on track. It would be a shame to let all the great efforts and superb detective work which went into identifying everyone go to waste!

Just as an aside to the original team photo - my mother-in-law was looking through the thread and recalled that her best friend back in the day was at one time the girlfriend of Bill Poynton when he was with the Clarets.

Well I've run out of our trophy winners but before starting with just squads through the ages here's our reserves from the 1961-'63 period.
Double Central League winners and Lancashire Senior Cup to boot. So many of them went on to have substantial EFL careers and most at the top level.

Back: Dave Walker, Walter Joyce, John Talbut,?, Harry Thomson, Brian O'Neil, George Bray(manager), Willie Irvine, Willie Morgan.
Front: ?, Freddie Smith, Trevor Meredith,?, Andy Lochhead, Arthur Bellamy,Ian Towers, Johnny Price Mick Buxton
I'm sure Royboy can fill in the blanks and I know I'll be embarrassed for missing them.

That's Ronnie Fenton on the back row and Peter Simpson behind the trophy on the front row.

Peter lived on Ingham Street in Padiham, literally a stone's throw from Gawthorpe and could walk there in a couple of minutes for training.

Both players appear on ClaretGeorgina's OP photo.

Thing is TT, as you well know, competition was unbelievably fierce for the Number 8 shirt in the first team at that time. He left us for West Brom in Nov.'62.

I’ll be on the pc tomorrow Roy soI’ll check it out but I don’t remember one. I’ll post a couple of very early ones also and then come forward in time. A few I can’t guarantee are Burnley although it said they were when I saved them, allsorts of kits.

TT, in your collection might you have a team/group photo of the 1919/20 squad ?.....the season before the title side of 1920/21......Cheers.
Went online and found this.
Search “burnley squad 19xx/xx squad”, when it opens the page hit the “images” button and you might be lucky. I was.

Red and White stripes, but the odd thing is that was not the second strip in the 1919/20 season.

On the official team photo for that season it's clearly white shirts, white shorts and claret socks.

Still there on the top block, I believe, ChrisG.

Peter Simpson no longer there, but now 82 years young, Never stood a chance behind Jimmy Mac.

TT, I believe the first pic is the squad from 1896/97 season.

Back row, left to right.......J.Stuttard, J.Nicol, W.Place (senior), W.Tatham, T.McLintock, H.Bradshaw.
Front row........J.Davidson, W.Bowes, J.Espie, A.Livingstone, W.Place (junior).
On ground.......J.Reynolds, H.Robertson.

Second pic, 1882/83 squad.

Back row, left to right.......H.Culpan, Arthur Birley, R.B.Chase, J.Marsland, Mr. Charles Riley (umpire!), Sam Hargreaves.
Front row.......R.Horsfall, George Waddington, T.Cross, Tom Midgeley.
On ground.......J. Eastwood, Billy Brown.

The team from the 1896/97 season finished bottom of the First Division and were relegated for the first time in their history.

The 1882/83 squad is thought to be the oldest surviving photograph of a Burnley team group and shows the team that beat Burnley Ramblers 2-1 at Turf Moor which was at that time the home of Burnley Cricket Club.
