THE GOALKEEPER IN THE PICTURE IS RODNEY JONES.

I was so confident of this that I decided to look into it further. I found an article by Claret Tony from ClaretsMad from 2013 which showed a picture of Rod Jones, this photo made me more certain.
I then climbed into the attic to search for a copy of The Clarets Chronicles by Ray Simpson, I hope I am allowed to quote from this

Rodney Ernest Jones

…….ironically, the clarets could have had him for nothing for two years earlier, in June 1965, he had been signed on trial from Ashto United. He accompanied a Burnley youth squad to West Germany to compete in an Under 21 tournament, performing competently in victories against Ajax and Juventus before the young clarets were narrowly defeated by Red Star, Belgrade.

……

The only problem that I have is that my wife thinks I should go back up the attic and clear it out!! Thanks Royboy!! Having said that I do enjoy reading your posts, cheers
……ironically

The only keeper not mentioned from that era is Matt Tyrie, Scottish keeper. Not saying it's him mind.
There is a pic of him on Google with our other Scottish keepers, Harry Thomson & Adam Blacklaw. I am unable to download on here.

Ive spent 2 hours trying to get photos onto the site. Although 3 of them have made it onto my computer, from scanning, I can't see a way of transferring them. I'm useless on understanding computers, so before I get really mad 😡, I'm throwing in the towel.
I tried Hippers advice, but I didn't even see an Options or Attatchment box.
If anyone who knows me personally would like to get in touch and show me the right way to forward photos on my computer, I'd appreciate it.
I'm now going to try and unwind, watching a Cup game.

More than worth the wait.....Certainly never seen that photo before.

They were a terrific side who were more than comfortable in the First Division at the time. Think we finished 10th in the league that season, with a young Jimmy Mac and Jimmy Adamson starting to have an influence.

The unlucky player was probably David Cargill who only managed a handful of games in his short time here. Dad rated him very highly but he was always behind Brian Pilkington in the pecking order.

Be interested to hear from Bfc as to how that tour to Mauritius went, did we play a number of games ?

Thanks for the reply Vino, French not good for me, failed first time with Ken Brown before Bill Grey got me through. I did double maths with Nobby Stokes among others, so would not have spent classroom time with you. In fact class room did not feature much at all, football and cricket pitches were where I lived. Cheers

What a brilliant opening post from davemanu. Six games at the end of a hectic '53/'54 season, all wins and 36 goals for with only 2 against. We obviously left a very favourable impression with the locals.

Check the 3 letters after the dot on your photos name. This forum will only accept certain ones. .jpg and .tif are both acceptable. You might need to save it as a .jpg to post. It also needst to be under 2Mb. Check size.

Nice one, longsidetrumpet. Another one well worth the wait and in the green shirts, our colours at the time. It would be another four seasons before we adopted the Claret and Blue colours of Aston Villa.

Manager at the time was Spen Whittaker but tragedy was to strike Spen as he travelled to London to register a new player. He was just 39 years old.

TT, I didn't even know they had made it onto the site😀, until now.
While muddling my way through another 2 hrs of trying and not knowing they'd gone on site, I got a General error message. So I'd given up again.
Luckily I'd taken photos on my I Pad of a few more team photos from the 30/40s. So I will put some more on the site, probably on Sunday.
Any thoughts Royboy and others, whether you want me to leave them without the players names, so you can have a go at naming them?.

Wow, where to start with those, Bfc.......Some cracking photos.

On the 1947 Cup Final photo is that Ray Harrison at this end ?....then Harry Potts, Harold Mather and Jimmy Strong.

The 1962 Cup Final pic is a bit more straightforward with, from this end, Blacklaw, Robson, Harris, Elder, Connelly, Mac, Pointer with Adamson next to Prince Philip.

The 1934/35 photo is an interesting one. Of all the Burnley teams my Dad watched over the years this is the one he talked about more than most. They made it to the FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park where they lost to Sheff Wed.......Top left Billy Dougall (what a servant he was to the Club over so many years), Jim Brown, A.Smith, Tommy Wallace, Bob Scott, George Waterfield, Alick Robinson, Tom Clegg (chairman), Alf Boland (manager)......Front row, Albert Alderman, Robert Syme, Teddy Hancock, Cecil Smith, Tom Prest & Percy Downes.

Some fascinating stories of that 1936/37 team, not least the one about Arthur Woodruff, that's him bottom row, far right. He was a regular by then in that side on the photo but his last game was not until some 16 years later in 1952 away at Chelsea.

By then he was a mere 39 years old and was the oldest post-war Claret (I think) until succeeded by Gordon Cowans in 1997.

Your photo, on page 3 of this thread, of the team with the Championship trophy, clearly has the badge on the shirt.

As a teenager in the late 1970s I had a weekend job in Burnley town centre working in a shop with a brilliant old fella who had a well earned reputation for 'tall tales' so I took most things he said with a very large pinch of salt, but he regularly used to point out a bedraggled man who would wander around town going through the rubbish bins.
One day the bedraggled man turned up and was rooting through the bin right outside our shop as usual when out of the blue the old fella pointed to him and said "he used to be a Burnley player and he played in the FA Cup final". Now I have little doubt that I would have responded with my usual incredulity, though this tale felt different as he did seem genuinely moved by this guy's plight and was considerably more insistent that it was true than he would be when speaking about his role in the Great Escape or how he had survived the sinking of the Titanic.
Now I don't want to dampen the mood on this ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT thread, but almost 50 years on, I still wonder to this day whether this was maybe just about the only true thing that the old fella ever told me!
I'm not into tittle-tattle and am certainly not making light of anyone, let alone an ex-Claret, ending up in such dire straits so, even almost half a century on and with the player a long time dead I still think that it would be unsensitive of me to name the player on here, be it true or not, though I'm hoping that with this site's absolutely incredible depth of knowledge all things Claret that, whilst unlikely to be common knowledge, someone will know if there was a Burnley player of this era who ended up falling on very hard times and could therefore perhaps confirm this very sad tale.
ClaretTony's player profile on him does very slightly allude to something of this nature which backs up my thoughts that the story actually is true, but whilst I'm probably 99% sure, given where the claim came from, I still reserve a tiny degree of doubt (and perhaps hope) that it isn't.

I was not aware that the 1914 Cup Winners medal awarded to Jerry Dawson was the first awarded to a player, who had played in an FA Cup Final.
