Ted Adams, one of Dad's top ever signings. By the mid-'30's let's just say we were very weak on the goalkeeping front. We needed reinforcements and manager at the time, Alf Boland, was left in no uncertain terms he "had" to bring Ted Adams to our Club.

The problem was that Adams, by now approaching 30 years old, had already made his decision to retire. He was "persuaded" to delay that retirement and came to Burnley as our first choice keeper. He served us well and kept the jersey until the outbreak of WW2 at which time he officially retired in 1940.

. Jerry Dawson, with his Golden Retriever. I think he had 2. I was lucky enough to have the pleasure of chatting with him outside his Semi, close to the Cliviger petrol station. The medal photos relate to the article, which wouldn't allow me to copy all together, on the site.
Royboy, Ted Adams daughter lives close to me and she had given me the photo of him a long time ago.

IMG_0201.JPG. Rather than researching the date and names (excluding the cat) on the photo, which I've misplaced, I thought some on here would like to add them.
I keep being drawn back to this somewhat informal pic and each visit reveals a bit more detail about that special squad. Looking at the lack of a shirt for the likes of Harry Potts and Reg Kirkham it suggests the photo was taken sometime between the two seasons 1946/47 and 1947/48. Because of the previous horrendous winter we didn't conclude our League games until the beginning of June '47, some six weeks after we appeared in the FA Cup Final against Charlton.

All of that Cup Final team are featured on the pic with the exception of left-winger Peter Kippax. They are Dawson, Woodruff, Mather, Attwell, Brown, Bray, Chew, Morris, Harrison & Potts. Of course there are lots of other squad players on there too, including including the likes of Jack Marshall and Jack Butterfield.

Marshall was one of three players on the pic to eventually manage a Club side, he became manager of Blackburn whilst of course Alan Brown and Harry Potts managed the Clarets. Jack Butterfield only played a handful of first team games but was employed in any manner of positions at Turf Moor over many years from Club scout to Commercial Manager.

Goodness knows what the relevance is of the cat on Harold Spencer's knee !

I didn’t include Harold (sailor) Mather as a manager. I spent many an hour in his house up Harle Syke having a brew. He joined Nelson Fc as player manager and later managed a team in South Africa. His nickname came from his wartime service in the Navy. Stanley Mathews said when playing against Harold, he always played him fairly and didn’t come off the pitch Black and Blue.

FA of Royboy, Tricky Trevor and jtv Re the photo at the bottom of page 5, Stan Ternant confirmed to me, it's Billy Gaskell, who we struggled to ID. Rod Jones IS the goalkeeper, as I'd suggested. We got to the final of the tournament in Bochum Germany and lost 2-1 againt Red Star Belgrade. Chris Nichol had given away a penalty.
We then played a friendly against Real Madrid youth team, who we beat 5-0. Stan did tell me, but I didn't hear where it was, other than I think it was in Switzerland.

Superb photos, Athletico mtoto.

George Halley and Len Smelt both gave top class service to the Clarets over many years. As to your third photo, the suggestion of William Emerson seems a more than realistic one. Take a look on page 5 of this thread, about half way down and a team photo from 1922/23 provided by Tricky Trevor. William Emerson is in the middle of the back row alongside Jerry Dawson.

Worth more than a second look at that 1962 Reserve team, they were good enough to hold their own in the First Division, we really were so strong at that time.

Back Row.....Dave Walker, Willie Irvine, Arthur Bellamy, Harry Thomson, John Talbut, Freddie Smith, George Bray & Brian O'Neil.

Front Row......Trevor Meredith, Peter Simpson, Billy Marshall, Andy Lochhead, Ronnie Fenton & Ian Towers.

Great photos, TT.

Blimey, TT, is that some squad photo or what ?.......35 players plus staff.

Superb photo with the Bee Hole End in the background virtually sloping into nothing towards Brunshaw Road. Six more seasons before it was extended backwards to increase ground capacity. Also, to the right, the Enclosure in front of the original Brunshaw Road stand.

In terms of the players that really is some group photo.....I make it 35 players in all......23 of those played in the First team that season namely......Top row (five), Buxton, Walker, Blacklaw, Robson & Todd.....Middle row (six), Merrington, O' Neil, Smith, Thomson, Bellamy, Elder.......Front row (ten) Price, Talbut, Miller, Lochhead, Irvine, Harris, Morgan, Towers, Pointer & Angus......Sat down (two) Latcham & Coates.

As for the remaining 12.....here are a suggestion of names.....Adamson, Blant, Dicken, Gaskell, Holmes, Kay, Kinsella, Mcgarty, Millar, Nicholl, Ternent & Wilson (in no particular order).

A few future stars of the 60s on there. Back row = Freddie Smith, John Price, Trevor Meredith, Peter Simpson, Harry Thomson, Dave Walker, Bill Marshall.

Front = Mick Buxton, Andy Lochhead, Arthur Bellamy, Brian O'Neil. Standing are Ronnie Fenton, who seems thirsty, John Talbut & George Bray.

Ron Meadows is one. Was with us 4 seasons from 46/7 to 49/50 but never played a 1st team game. Went to Bournemouth.

I think the other may be a lad called Bates who played in the A Team - not sure of his first name.
