uric - 6 - I don’t think you can blame him for the goal. Otherwise fine even if he seemed surprisingly hesitant to come and sweep up at times.

Roberts - 8 - tidy defensively and ranged forward to better effect than we’ve seen previously this season.

Vitinho - 7 - steady away defensively. Some nice touches going forward but only occasionally penetrative.

Harwood Bellis - 8 - took his goal well and defended well.

Taylor - 7 - solid enough, hopefully the injury isn’t serious because he’s just beginning to look more comfortable at centre back.

Cullen - 6 - mostly tidy but when he went to play more progressively in the second half he was guilty of forcing it.

Cork - 7 - steady enough and helped us manage Preston’s aerial threat.

Brownhill - 7 - neat and tidy mostly but did too much of his best work in the channels rather than arriving late in the box.

Benson - 7 - really lively and showed a willingness to beat his man, and he showed an end product most of the time. Quieter after the break.

Tella - 5 - not really his night, not much came off for him.

Rodriguez- 6 - his class was evident but we weren’t able to get him free in the box.

Beyer - 7 - looks a decent athlete although I suspect he’ll take a game or two to adjust to the physicality of the league.

Zaroury - 7 - added something with his willingness to draw defenders and either deliver early or play the pass.

Not bad and Preston are well organised. But we got into lots of promising positions only for attacks to slow too much and allow Preston to reorganise. There’s a fine line between patiently working space and getting over pedantic and the balance wasn’t quite there tonight. We do still miss the ability to manipulate the ball in tight areas that you’d imagine Twine will add and it was a surprise Churlinov wasn’t involved tonight to offer something similar, although Zaroury’s cameo was promising. At the other end we looked a little vulnerable at times but once again our dominance meant we kept them at arms length.

Brownhill 5 really poor, not a 10
Tella 5 not his night
Benson 6 bright but no end product at all, shot nowhere near the target from good areas, poor overhit crosses, went down easily a couple of times in good areas.
Jrod 5 quiet, barely involved, a proper goalscorer is on the end of one of those Maatsen/Zaroury crosses. Near post run for a tap in 4 times, didn't make the move once.

Beyer 7 fine debut, 1 good block.
Zaroury 7 good, looked to have end product.
Maatsen 7 has to start, no idea why he didn't.

Muric 6 - very little to do. Unfortunately with the slip which was very costly.
Roberts 7 - made some excellent runs first half and used the ball well. A little quieter in the second.
Harwood-Bellis 7 - great header for the goal but we weren't convincing defending set pieces.
Taylor 7 - solid enough, gives us a nice balance defensively but again not the most dominant in the air.
Vitinho 6 - solid defensively, maybe could have done better with his shot in the first half
Benson 7 - very tricky but over complicated things at times and his final ball should have been earlier.
Brownhill 7 - played OK but not hugely involved, good corner for the goal.
Cork 8* - best player on the pitch.
Cullen 6 - a little quiet and at times sloppy in possession in the first half which was a little unusual.
Tella 6 - not quite his night tonight, showed glimpses of being a threat but not consistently.
Jay 6 - some moments of class but we couldn't get him involved enough this evening and he was peeling out wide far too regularly.

Beyer 6 - looks solid and to have good pace. I like the left and right partnership offered by THB and Taylor but if Taylor is injured he looks like an able deputy.
Zaroury 7 - showed glimpses of quality and his final delivery much more threatening than Bensons was. Linked well with Maaysen
Maatsen - n/a but looked a threat and had a good understanding with Zaroury

Overall a very reasonable performance which would likely have resulted in 3 points but for the unfortunate slip by Muric. Preston defended very well and we're happy for us to have it in the wide areas and defend their box. Only when we started delivering the ball more quickly and early from wide positions through Zaroruy and Maatsen did we really threaten and look like scoring. They were perhaps introduced a little late I hindsight.
On to Saturday we go against a Bristol side who have started well like ourselves.

Muric 6
Roberts 7 one of his better games
THB 8
Taylor 8
Vitinho 6 not a strong game from him always tried to come inside , the left was a big let Fownhope yonighy
Cork 7
Cullen 6
Benson 5 has pace but doesn't really know what to do with it, end product is very poor both crossing and shooting
Brownhill 5 wasn't really breaking into the box as we've seen, but think the wide men were poor tonight so no chanve to make uo the numbers
Tella 6 as Vitinho, always came inside, not very near Jay most of game
Rodriguez 6 quiet one

Beyer 7
Zaroury 6 looked to run at them

We were very pedestrianised tonight, PNE did a Dyche on us and we didn't have any answers, no pace or guile centrally, no quick one twos with the 2 cm, they just passed it on simple, and the wide men hardly ever drove at their men committing defenders.

Last 5 or so minutes we got to the dead ball line a couple of times, we needed that all game.
PNE looked shattered, but we had no actual ideas think we got it wrong both tactically and personnel wise tonight, we look a bit lost when teams are organised

A frustrating performance with almost some promise but ultimately predictable
Muric 6
Roberts 7 (would have been higher after 50mins but became a bit too predictable)
Taylor HB 9 MOM one of the few to actually look to regularly play a forward to pass
Taylor 8
Vintinho 6
Cork 8 I thought he was excellent, picked up so much lose ball and positioned himself really well, just wanted him to drive with it a bit more at times
Cullen 6 (way too many sidewards passes when not really needed)
Brownhill 6 very quiet, a dew opportunities to open up but didn’t take the ball on the half turn once and so ended up being too slow to break and / or limited his passing options
Tella 6
Benson 6 almost a 7 but the final ball / pass / shot needs to be better
Jay 6

Subs: Thought both the new lads looked very promising and comfotbale on the ball - 7 for both

Suspect the number of 'derby' games we've got this season could potentially be problematic as there's a few sides playing their cup finals against us and tonight was no exception.

Whilst clearly the better team with better players, we struggled again to break down a well organised team and end up plodding about far too much around the edge of the penalty area.

Still, this wasn't a bad performance and the players are still yet to fully gel so nothing to get too worried about. Another point on the road is fine.

Muric - 6 unfortunately that he slipped at a key moment but otherwise it was all routine stuff

Roberts - 7 got forward really well twice in the first half and saw a lot of the ball in the second but often had nothing to hit

Harwood-Bellis - 7 nice goal, fairly solid, not much else to say

Taylor - 7 similar to THB bar the goal

Vitinho - 6 fine defensively, a bit too faffy going forward

Cullen - 5 far too much sidewaysing and him dwelling on the ball at least twice in dangerous areas nearly cost us

Cork - 8 a cut above anything else on the pitch

Benson - 6 saw a hell of a lot of the ball but especially 2nd half he slowed play and turned back on himself. JBG injured again I take it?

Brownhill - 5 some good touches when he found space but he's not a player for tight areas as he's not quite got the guile. There wasn't much space about so he was less effective than of late.

Tella - 6 stretches things really well, although he didn't do a tremendous amount when he did that.

Rodriguez - 6 a bit guilty of going looking for the ball so he wasn't there to be on the end of things.

Beyer - 6 looked decent and this wasn't a game where making your debut in a different country as a sub would be ideal at all. Good weight of pass.

Zaroury - 6 took a while to get in the game but he's another player who will be useful for stretching the play, looks tricky and put a couple of decent balls in.

Still very much a work in progress. As long as we're in or around the top 6 come the world cup, we'll be OK.

Muric 6 - Nothing to do but still contrived to be a part of the poor goal.
Roberts 8 - Hardly put a foot wrong all night
THB 8* Gets the vote from me and a brilliant headed goal.
Taylor 7 - Played well
Vitinho 5 - Hardly any affect
Cork 8 - Another solid performance
Cullen 6 - Recycles the ball quickly but I expected a bit more
Brownhill 6 - Not at his best but okay
Benson 6 - Scared the daylights out of them but lacks the final ball
Tella 6 - Needed more from him
Jay Rod 6 - Never stopped running but can't play up front alone

Beyer 7 - Promising debut
Zaroury 7 - Another promising debut.

This was another game VK perhaps should have been prepared to risk more and go for goals. The interplay is promising but the final pass is woefully lacking at the moment.

Another point closer to safety though.

Muric 5 Has Dracula syndrome, doesn`t like crosses, takes no pressure off the defence
Roberts 8 Better game tonight, more involved
THB 8 Steady away, good goal, worry sometimes when he gets caught in possession
Taylor 8 Good game hope it`s nothing serious we need him
Vitinho 6 quiet
Cork 7 Brilliant workhorse in midfield, involved in everything, poor efforts on goal though when he had the chances
Cullen 6 Honestly expected more creativity from this lad, yet to see it
Brownhill 6 Just steady
Benson 7 End product has to be better, frightens defenders but wastes a lot of possession when in good positions overdoing it
Tella 7 Had his tricky runs sussed out but still carried a threat
JRod 7 Showed some good touches and saw plenty of the ball, trouble was he was either too deep or out wide not in the box

Zaroury 7 All the subs looked steady away and didn`t appear to weaken the team or disrupt the system of play, although I wish the had, in a
good way of course
Beyer 7
Maatsen 7

Whilst it`s good to watch us control the game there has to be an end product and tonight there really wasn`t, overplayed and was to quick to make sideways passes when on a few occasions a pot at goal could have been attempted, I hope VK is learning from these type of games, sometimes we just have to get th ball forward quicker. Onward and upward, in VK we trust !!

Just watched it back, Muric was like Bambi on ice. Should have been an easy save. That’s 6 points he has lost us so far in what 9 games.

Benson is a 9/10 running and dribbling, but a 5/10 for his final ball, and has been every game he's played.

Tella, although good outwide, is wasted. We need his speed and skill through the middle.

JayRod works his socks off, and has played far better than Ash, but he doesn't help the team. We need someone quicker, playing off the shoulder up front.

Beyer and Zaroury both looked useful I hope we see more of them.

Frustrating that we play so well, control the ball, loads of possession, but we haven't learnt how to use it. I accept we are still learning this system, but the signs are we haven't learnt from some of our mistakes as we keep making the same ones. I also think we have a better starting XI, than we have used this season.

Well, we dominated possession but didn't do enough with it

Preston are a very limited but well organised side though, and they essentially had to sit in and around their penalty box the entire game to get a point

Getting points on the road is never bad though

Muric 6 - unfortunate slip
Roberts 8 - much more like it
THB 8 - solid, broke with the ball really well
Taylor 8 - very solid
Vitinhio 7 - good
Cullen 6 - kept us ticking but he's clearly going to get targeted as he hangs on to the ball a bit longer and lacks the physicality of Cork
Cork 8* - A rolls royce at this level
Brownhill 6 - not up to the standards he has set this season
Tella 6 - couldn't really get in the game
Benson 7 - had his man on toast, but a combination of a bad final ball and no one to pass to in the box wasted that
Jay 6 - probably should have been on the end of some of the crosses but linked play well

Subs
Beyer 7 - not as easy game to come into as a sub
Zourary 7 - looked useful
Maatsen 7

Not a lot wrong basically

Oh, completely forgot

Special mention for the fan about three seats away from me with his "GET IT IN THE BOX YOU C**T" shouts from about the 2nd minute

There is one guy who might need some convincing about the merits of possession football!

Just watched it back, Muric was like Bambi on ice. Should have been an easy save. That’s 6 points he has lost us so far in what 9 games.
In the sense that Bambi was slipping on the ice, I suppose the comparison is apt. Criticising him for slipping is like criticising someone for needing a sneeze though - perhaps he should have cleaned his studs better or something. Even ignoring the slip, it's not a goal if Cullen does his job on the lime instead of inexplicable standing a foot behind it.

Not sure about the idea he's cost us 6 points either. Blackpool aside, not sure what other game you are thinking of, even if you include last night (which you shouldn't).

Got in so many promising positions but lacked the quick incisive ball. Shame Muric was wearing slippers and again our lack of height let us down defensively

Roberts 7 decent 1st half slowed
THB 8 smooth operator + goal
Taylor 7 calm though not a lot to do
Vitinho 6 struggling to see him as a LB
Cork 7 busy and calm
Cullen 6 busy but not his best
Brownhill 5 as per Cullen
Benson 6 V quick but no end product
Tella 6 always a danger but snuffed out
Jay Rod 6 still a class act but awful service , some of the crosses ..jesus wept

MOM THB the rest 6

Average to below par performance.

IMO the problem is our offensive set up with Tella playing to wide and Rodriguez to deep which gave the likes of Benson and Vitinho little options, also the sloppy goals we keep conceding

Muric 6 - not much to do, decent with the ball at his feet. unfortunate to slip for their goal.
Roberts 6 - Tried a few crosses but other than that not much
THB 8 - Liked whne he stepped forward to bring the ball out of defence when nothing on. Shades of Steve Davis.
Taylor 7 - Solid
Vitinho 6 - Okay
Cork 8* - controlled midfield and dictated the match
Cullen 7 - control alongside Cork
Brownhill 6 - Quiet, no space to run into
Benson 7 - Had good moments but generally made the wrong decisions at the end of decent play.
Tella 6 - game by-passed him for majority
Jay Rod 7 - Played well, did his part linking up play but got zero service.

Beyer 7 - Promising start
Zaroury 7 - Looked lively and created some of the better chances of the match with Maatsen. Would bring him on sooner next time a game goes flat. livens things up.
Maatsen - Linked well with Zaroury and created some of the better chances of the match.

Maatsen 7 has to start, no idea why he didn't.
Have you forgotten how poor he was against WBA, when we asked why Vitinho was retained in that position?
