P.S. I have no idea how much my bills will be over the winter so I am leaving the £500 in there. Might reduce my DD next month dependant on my bill for October.

We’ve gone for two hours a day. The standing charge alone is ridiculous.
Last January, we paid £111 for gas, but the heating was on for probably 10 hours a day with my wife working from home. We cook with gas as well.
This last month we have paid £153 and only put the heating on for two hours a day in the last week.

I had to put my heaters on yesterday for the first time this year. I had them on for about 4 hours in the evening, the temperature has dropped to about 12° at night here in Spain.

A few weeks ago I bought two chimney sheep to block the draughts coming down chimneys and keep the warmth inside the house (obviously we don't switch on the gas fires we have in the fireplaces when the chimney sheep are fitted). Made by a business in Cumbria from the wool of Herdwicke sheep. Easy to fit and easy to remove if you do want to light a fire.
Seems to be cutting my central heating costs.

Still holding out with no heating on.
Have the window open during the day to let some heat in.
Not sure if I can hold out in the cold snap that's due shortly though, the big socks only go so far.

Me too, what's the point in paying extortion to be cold, makes sense to put the heating on to me, otherwise your paying for nothing.

I have the, supposedly, cheaper to run air source heating. The colder it gets the dearer it gets as the system has to work harder to heat it. It takes ages for the radiators to heat up as well. Costing a fortune and I only have it on low. Also have to heat the water separately, which only goes to 48 degrees, so you are paying twice if you have to have both on.

Had ours on since mid September.
Just arrived home from 2 weeks away and the house was down to 7oC when we arrived home so cranked it up. Turned the boiler down to 60c and have the heating on for 7 hrs a day at 21oC.
No point in freezing your nuts of if you can afford not to

Don't really understand people sitting there in the cold unless you genuinely can't afford to turn it on.
Doesn't do you or your house any good either.

People are just different. I have worked outside all my life so can't stand being too hot.
If I worked in an office with heating on all day long I would probably be cold at home with no heating on.
As it is, if the heating goes on I have to sit in my boxer shorts. And I don't get new ones until Xmas days.

Me too. Install cost huge and no real saving, as it goes and goes!

I'm with EDF and they have been taking their own meter readings for a while. I don't have a smart meter installed but they're still taking these automatically without me having to submit anything to them.
I have checked our box outside and to be fair, their readings do look correct. I didn't think they could do this however without you having a smart meter installed?
Can anyone advise if this sounds right, or should I be contacting them?

Suppose they could be, I didn't think of that. Sounds like too much hassle for them to come out themselves and do it to me.

Your invoice will usually tell you if the meter reading is an estimate or actual reading.
As I understand it most companies use a meter reading contractor - Siemens often does readings around here (in Hertfordshire).
Contact EDF and ask how they do it.

We`re with EDF and send monthly readings by Email ... they keep trying to get us to have a smart meter but as we have Storage heating with Economy7 and Solar panels, I am resisting so far, as I have heard horror stories about the "smart meters" not being very smart and cocking up readings.

Ian just to cover yourself take a photograph of your current reading moments before they do the install, the photo needs a date and time on it. It’s back up if they cock up.

In Scotland, I have a Google Nest which controls the heating but not the water. I have purchased an upgrade thermostat to cope with both. The question is...at the boiler end, there is a white square unit with the wiring - does this need upgrading in any way or can a heating man use it to do any changes needed? Expertise welcome! ( as always)
