At the end of the day his time was up. He was useless and never provided any insight. He was looked after like royalty for 30 years. Go and do something else Mark and leave colour out of it.
Or as you might have put it.

A respected broadcaster for 30 years, he has enjoyed a good career and is no doubt upset at being effectively retired by the BBC. Personally, I don't think he should have brought race and age into this because it's not clear to me that either are the issue here.

Comments like this back up my point - read the rest of the thread for some similar comments;

‘White folk are the majority. Blacks a much smaller section of society.’

‘…black folk over use in certain progs now, whether they are accomplished or not.’

I’ve no idea where you guys live or are surrounded by but it’s language like this that is totally unacceptable.

You would not talk to our manager using those terms so why use it on here?

People should be given a job for their ability to do said job ... Not just box ticking regardless of their age, creed, colour, sex or number of limbs, eyes, hair, teeth ...

But even so Lawrenson is still a Whinging Preston Bellend regardless 😁

Talking of stealing a living Paul Merson, loony Le Tissier (now sacked) and Phil Thompson were as thick as they came but still managed to get a job on Sky.

They didn't have a single brain cell between them.

I quite liked the old lot on Soccer Saturday, personally, even Paul Merson. I think Soccer Saturday aspires to be more informal and humorous than MOTD; there's an importance placed on capturing the pre-match pub banter kind of vibe and having a few clowns on the show helps this along. Mark Lawrenson is a different kind of clown. Listening to Mark Lawrenson just makes me depressed. He's a total joy vacuum, and he offers no insight worth listening to.

Mark Lawrenson would make the Battle of Hastings sound boring if he was co-commentator. I don't believe his age has anything to do with it; it's the fact he rarely put any effort in to get better at his job.
He'd have been fine with VAR. The French were clearly offside.

The 2 amount to the same thing whichever way you look at it the employment is being terminated, the only subtle difference being with not getting your contract renewed you are aware that 1 day you know the day is coming.

I have a friend who works at the BBC and he told Mark Lawrenson they wouldn't renew his contract unless he started paying zakat at a local mosque. Senior bosses knew about it but couldn't say anything due to the BBC's woke charter.

Sacked in a legal sense is a different thing from being let go at the end of the contract. In a vernacular sense, especially after 30 years with one employer or "employer", it amounts to the same thing.

It isn't worth getting het up about whose definition of the word is the only possible definition and all others are wrong. They're both right, or can be both right, depending on context.

The context here is that someone is pushing it to be sacked because it suits their agenda about it being really, really, really tough for old white heterosexual men these days

Its is hilarious, but worrying

The BBC have chosen not to renew his contract as any appeal that he did have has narrowed to such an extent he's not worth employing.
He wants to dress that stark fact as an act of "wokeism", whatever that means, that's his choice - however bitter and sad.

https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/2021/bb ... -inclusion

It's inevitable than when the BBC has a specific policy of pursuing more BAME (awful term!) workers and by definition fewer non-BAME workers, then any non-BAME worker who loses his job is likely to think it's because of his skin colour rather than his ability. It's human nature. I don't think Lawrenson will be missed, but he obviously does.

In the UK mate is considered and informal greeting between strangers (usually male) as opposed to addressing someone more formally as Sir, so its definitely not rude unless it is used in a context to deliberately be rude.

With that last bit in mind I can definitely understand why grumps might consider it rude.
